Homework from Feb. 14

In class last week we discussed the Love essays and students shared their symbols of love which ranged from the pregnancy test results, and actual people like one students girl friend, complete with bow-- to the tamer boxes of chocolate, stuffed toys and engagement rings.

We looked at three questions. Students were to choose one and respond using: 1 paraphrase, 1 direct quote, and 1 block quote. The essay was to be three paragraphs long.

Look for examples from the text that prove your answer to the question. For questions regarding signal phrases, paraphrases, and block quotes and the use of evidence in research writing see, Hacker pp. 402-408.

Read up to the 4th Iteration. Also the cyber-exercise is due by midnight Thursday.

1. Is the resurrection of dinosaurs ethical? Why or why not?

2. What are some of the reasons why Jurassic Park is built? Why does it fail?

3. What does the "impending failure" of Jurassic park say about scientific research and corporate funding?

1. Is the resurrection of dinosaurs ethical? Why or why not?

I think that the resurrection of dinosaurs isn’t ethnical at all to resurrect an animal that has been dead for hundreds of millions of years just for our pleasure and enjoyment—its basically animal cruelty. I don’t think this scientist actually thought it out how the animals would adapt to this day in age environment. Or how would they react to the new world changes such as pollution, the atmosphere, or especially children touching, throwing, or feeding them. Resurrecting animals of that century and time would be absolutely careless and unjust to the animals; because they would eventually do two things die off from society and changes that the world has made from time, or take over the world by killing the unknown.

2. What are some of the reasons why Jurassic Park is built? Why does it fail?

The three major reasons why Jurassic Park was built was for enjoyment of a new an exciting amusement park, to see how animals would react in a new day in age such as 1983 when the book was written. Also a scientist wanted to be the first to do something amazing like resurrecting animals and having them adapt to an amusement park--Also having the most “AMBER” in the world.
This plan initially fails because it should’ve been obvious that when you bring back something that old that it wouldn’t be able to adapt to this new society. These animals used to eat other animals that weight hundreds of pounds and basically were killing machines—such as alligators or sharks put on this eat to destruct. Basically the animals didn’t want to be confined to an amusement park and became smarter than people in away.

3. What does the "impending failure" of Jurassic park say about scientific research and corporate funding?

The “impending failure” of Jurassic Park says a lot about corporate funding for research. The first and major thing that it says about research and corporate funding is that just because someone says “that they plan to do something great and amazing for the entire world” doesn’t mean that it will come true. The corporation that gave all the ten of millions of dollars towards this park actually made someone else the richest AMBER holder in the world. They also paid for expense traveling he did throughout states and different climates that actually had nothing to do with the park they found out in the second iteration. They were basically funding this man’s future plans but didn’t actually know what they were. I just want to know how they let him get by with it for so long.

Brittany, the activity was to cite sources, which means you have to use the writing conventions Hacker demonstrates in the text: Research from signal phrases, and paraphase to block quotes. This is the reason why I gave the assignment, to have students practice using in-text citations.

For the block quote, it needs to be more than 4 lines justified.

Revise and I'll look again later.

2. What are some of the reasons why Jurrasic Park is built? Why does it fail?

Initally John Hammond of the Hammond Foundation, constructed the idea of a state of the art amusement park. The only one of it's kind, with a main theme consisting of living attractions.
An exclusive type of resort that would capture the interest of people from all over the world to experience(62).
Not only would the Park generally be a new concept, and bring people from around the world, but as John Hammond points out" We can never forget the ultimate object of the project in Coasta Rica-to make money." "Lots and lots of money"(63).
Ultimately Jurassic Park fails because of the idea of limiting personal cost in order to gain financially. The operation of the park was by incorporating the Dinosaurs with the all of the computer systems, One glitch in the system and everything goes haywire. These animals would not be equipped to survive in the new age.

Assignment: Love

Love

“Love is a deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person,” (American Heritage Dictionary). In the English language there are many words that describe how we love or how we show love and even words that describe types of love, but there is only one true word that means “love,” where as in the Greek Language there are three words to describe the different aspects of how they see love: Agape, eros, and philia. Agape is what the Greeks believe to be unconditional, self sacrificing, and thoughtful love. Eros has to do with the more physical side of love. The Greeks believed that eros was the sexual natured side of love. Last but not least philia, is the love of friendship for your siblings and for your family in general. The most valued love in my opinion is philia because eros and agape leave too much room for a person to get hurt or taken advantage of.
To be unconditional is to be without limits or reserves and in this case to love regardless of the situation. Agape is the expected assumption that you are not going to stop loving that person because of any circumstance that may arise. The problem with this form of love is that it can leave a person open to getting hurt. If you have to love someone unconditionally then it puts that person in a position where they can take advantage of you or disregard your feelings because they know you will love them no matter what they do. This is not an effective way to describe love because when you really love someone there should be no window of opportunity to get hurt or taken advantage of. When you love someone, their best interest should always be utmost in your heart and mind.
Eros was the God of love. He was the God that personified all the aspects of love, but he generally showed the physical and sexual side. Eros as a type of love is the sensation of intense desire and attraction toward a person, bringing out the sexual nature of the human being. If there were nothing more to love then a sexual side then eros would be an ideal way to describe love in general, but there are many more aspects to love then just being sexual.
Philia is best described as the love for friendship and family. The Beatles state this exceptionally well in the song Cant Buy Me Love.
“I'll give you all I got to give if you say you love me too, I may not have a lot to give but what I got I'll give to you, I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love.”
You can not buy true friendship, you can not buy family, and you definitely can not buy love. Philia demands that you must actually like the person you are loving and caring because there is no prior agreement of unconditionally loving that person and your love is not based solely on sexual attraction. With philia, love is something that comes with time and experience. There is nothing that says you are forced to stay and forced to still love that person if you feel that they have hurt you. There is no attachment other then the way you feel.
I have come to the conclusion that there is only one word for love in the English dictionary for a reason. Words like lust, admiration, desire, and respect merely describe certain aspects of love but none of these words individually could cover the full meaning of love. The Greeks broke love up into three different categories to show that people love in different ways, but separately I don’t think that each category resembles the true meaning of what we know as love today.

Is the resurrection of dinosaurs ethical? why or why not?

It’s hard to say whether it’s ethical or not. Humanity in itself doesn’t have a long standing knowledge of living dinosaur. Most scientists would most certainly say it’s ethical, for the pure fact that it’s something to be done, and such a thing done would be a first of my many scientific breakthroughs in mankind thirst for knowledge. Although, there will be some that says it’s un-ethical. Which I somewhat agree with, for reason that is… basically, what rights does “man” have to bring back to life a species that we know from excavation, a species that could be dangerous and lived in the time that human kind didn’t. the lack of knowledge of species that would return from extinction would or could be catastrophic, for that reason alone and there are unforeseen problem that could occurs and have no way of dealing with it.

What are some of the reason Jurassic park is built? Why does it failed?

As the one of the main character explain why Jurassic park is built? His reason is, to benefit mankind for the knowledge of living dinosaurs, to watch children’s face as they see living dinosaurs and the more important reason is to make money. Although, these reason are probably enough to some people to actually attempt the studies and even actually clone dinosaurs, it is not enough. Like Dr. Malcolm, one of the stories main characters predicts and says “there will always be problem, and man on its own will not be able to control species that we know nothing about”. The park needed on problem, and they got it. Unable to control it, because they were to optimistic about their problem solving techniques to prevent any problem they come across. Well, they were wrong! They came across problems they couldn’t control, and one after the other, the problem mounted to a point that all they could do is save their selves and abandon the park.

What does “impending failure” of Jurassic Park say about scientific research and corporate funding?

The only thing it tells me is that they have too much money and not enough knowledge of what they are trying to do. They can buy the most advance technologies on the planet if they want to, and direct it to study and keep the research of problems and success they come across and they still wouldn’t have enough knowledge to completely control something that nature or even god exterminated with time, from this old planet of ours.

Family Love Mary Perez

There are three different types of love. There is friendship love which is indulging and motivating. The bond between two romantic couples, and there’s always that “Family Love”. Out of the three, Family Love is the most valuable and important love because it’s the first love a person receives and it’s the foundation for future relationships.
Family Love is the first love an individual receives since the day they were born. For example, when my new baby cousin was born the instinctual feeling of the mother immediately influenced her to be protective of the newborn offspring. Unlike the love a person can feel for a friend or romantic partner, family love is incomparable and can not be combined with friendship or love affairs. Another example is when the baby feels the affection all around the child learns how to love and it sets a fine example for future relationships.
When a person has family love, that love leads people to a foundation for future relationships. When you live in a family without any isolation where love and affection are spread a child automatically learns to love. Then the child appreciates and initiates relationships with others.
However, if the child does not receive love and is isolated in the family, then their path can set out on to different directions. The child may not necessary be a juvenile delinquent but can be hurt and sad inside looking for love. This person could not know how to express love or correspond to another person because it never perceived its first family love.
In any case this may not be true, depending on the person, but it is radically constant in many cases. Indeed, it is true that family love is the first love to receive and experience in a person’s life. It helps an individual build relationship in the future. It doesn’t matter whether your in a friendship relation or in a romantic relationship just always remember that all relationships are based and built on the first family love.

1.Is the resurrection of dinosaurs ethical? Why or why not?
I think that the resurrection of dinosaurs is not ethical. I think that it is unethical because human beings I think are not made to bring life back from the past. We are not Gods so therefore we cannot take life or neither should we be able to bring back life of a different species. However, humans do have the ability to give life only because that is natural and is what is supposed to happen.

2. What are some of the reasons why Jurassic Park is built? Why does it fail?

Well the only reason that Jurassic Park was built was to make great sums of money. On the other hand they try to cover it by saying that they park could be an experience that the whole family could enjoy and that it would be a global site to see around the world. Even though this park was supposed to be for the kids it failed miserably because all they thought about was how much money they would make and not about the end result. Which were them bring about prehistoric animals that might have been gone for a reason and the fact that they should have not brought them back in the first place.

3. What does the "impending failure" of Jurassic park say about scientific research and corporate funding?

The impending failure of Jurassic park says that scientific research is getting more advanced and is sooner or later there will be people over the world doing thing like this if corporate funding continues. Then if there is continued funding there would not be any reason for the government to keep an eye on what and what should not be happing

The Meaning of Love

Love is strong emotion that sometimes transcends understanding. Love can be divided into three types – Agape, Eros and Philia. Agape is a Greek word that means love and represents divine, self-sacrificing, unconditional, active and thoughtful love. Greek philosophers during Plato’s time used Agape to describe the love of a spouse or family or affection for a certain type of activity (Wikipedia). St. Paul described Agape love in 1st Corinthians 13, 4-8a as:

"Love (agape) is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails" (Holy Bible).

Philia is an affection that denotes brotherhood or is generally a non-sexual affection. Philia is something you would have with your friends. Eros is an affection of a sexual nature (Wikipedia). I believe Agape love is the most valuable because it is unconditional. This means there are no strings attached – you can’t earn it or buy it and it’s freely given.

Hate is the opposite of love. Hate is a feeling of prejudice, bigotry, or condemnation against a person or group of people, such as racism, or intense religious or political prejudice (Wikipedia). Love and tolerance can be an effective weapon against hate. In Marvin Gaye’s song, “What’s Goin On”, he says, “Only love can conquer hate. We’ve got to find a way to bring some loving here today”. He recorded the song in May 1971 and a lot of it is still pertinent today.

There is a role for romantic love in the world today. I don’t believe it is an overrated western concept. Romance should be based on random acts of showing affection and not based on a certain holiday. It depends on what the other person likes. For example, your girlfriend might be on a diet, so candy would not be appropriate, but flowers or a card might.

In an article in Psychology Today, the writers believe that love functions on different levels. It includes biology and behavior, but works better when the couple consciously shapes their relationships through goodwill. This means respecting each other’s worlds and learning a little something from each other.

I believe the only ones who can be exploited by greeting card and candy store companies are those who may feel guilty for not having shown affection at other times during the year. I find with the florists that this is a time for them to raise the prices because they know they will have a lot of people purchasing flowers. So, in a way, they are taking advantage of the public.

One of the virtues of Agape love is self-sacrificing. The best example of this I found was in St. John, Chapter 3, verse 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (Holy Bible).
