Professor Sabir,

It was a pleasure reading your letter. this was so unexpected, you really made me feel that you enjoy teaching. I am forty two years old and the last english class I took was in high school.I have always enjoyed writing and my supervisor thinks I'm pretty good at it, but I know I need some work. I have been employed at the same non profit organization since the age of twenty five, much of my work requires me to write progress reports to our funders. I am excited about your class because I am looking forward to broadening my career options. My writing style has been my comfort zone for far too long and I am now ready to learn the rules and fundamentals of writing. Your letter answers many of my questions related to expectations and the benefits of being a good writer. Your definition of a good writer is encouraging and will keep me motivated.

Although, I do not listen to hip hop, I love Tupac shakur and look forward to studying his many talents.

Your energy comes though strong in your letter and you appear to enjoy teaching. The fact that you are making yourself available to us outside of your classroom is very motivating for me. I'm sure I will need some one on one time with you, because I love to write and I want to be the best that I can be. I look forward to you guiding the witing process. I want to become a disciplined writer, I know this will be challenging for me, but I'm ready.

I wasn't expecting to be going on field trips and this came as a surprise to me, you see, I'm not a very social person. But what the heck, its time for me to come out of my shell, after 42 years, you think?

I've read your column in the Tribune many years ago and even then I could tell you had a zest for educating. But I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be sitting in your class, imagine that!

Thank you for giving us a glimpse into you as a person and sharing your family with us. I can tell family means alot to you, just as it does to me.

Your letter willl serve as a refernce for me in my professional life as well as my personal life. I know that if I become a good writer I will definitely be a better communicator. I look forward to the good times as well as the not so good times as a student in your class.

Sincerely,
Lisa Ryan

What a lovely comment Lisa. I'm happy to hear you enjoy writing. I hope you like the books I've assigned this semester. Dyson is a great writer and he will inspire you. So will Guy and of course the young poet, Tupac. I can only imagine what kind of man he would have been had he lived. I think the same about Martin King, Malcolm X...those 4 Little Girls in Birmingham. Young martyrs. Who knows what impact they would have had on the lives around them.

Funny how Condolezza Rice was the friend of those little girls, as was Angela Davis and her sister Fania Davis.

Hello,I'm Barry Maes, and I just read your letter.I though that it was very positive and honest.I can see that writing and teaching is very important to you, and I really admire that.
One of the thing's that I hope to take with me, is writing a good, correct essay paper. I have trouble getting my ideas into writing, I also have trouble with thing's like spelling, grammer and so on...
But with a little help, I feel that I am able to write a good, correct essay paper.
I look forward to working with you for the next four months.

I hope to be able to translate my words from my head into complete sentences on paper, at the same time it all makes sense. Also I would like to stretch my vocabulary. I plan to bring my open mind and willingness to learn.

Dear Proffesor Sabir,
After reading your letter, I can pretty much tell that you are serious about your work and that means you are serious about your students. It was very long and I can tell you had fun with it as well, which shows a humor side to your teaching. I enjoy reading and writing, but I do not practice it enough, to understand my own mistakes. So I am prepared to recieve all the help possible from your class to improve my writing skills. Your style in teaching is very different and I admit it is a good technique to keep us students in the class. As far as the field trips, I got excited, because I haven't had to many of those since in like forever. So I hope I get a chance to make it to all the field trips with the class. Im ready to finish off the semester with a great bang! I plan to at least have a B in your class by commiting myself to my work. Can't wait.
