Hurricane Katrina Stories Cyber-Assignment

Friday, August 29, 2008 is the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the worse natural and man made disaster in this century. Bodies are still being recovered, people are still homeless, children are still lost. What is more unfortunate is our government's response or lack of response to its citizens in crisis.

We watched a film this morning, Second Line. Watch this video of an interview
with directors: http://www.filmcatcher.com/festivals/Sundance_Film_Festival/day_2/67/

We brainstormed about the piece, then three students shared their personal experiences and stories of escape and loss or family, friends, and property. The directors said they were looking at stereotypes and stigma.

Think about the story, the characters, what happens when the men are hired. Think about the symbols: teddy bear and machete. What emotions are invoked by the betrayal MacArthur feels when he his savings are stolen, yet he returns the savings of his employer?

Talk about the lighting, music, and landscape and how this adds to the feeling of despair, disaster and doom.

What is the movie about? Katrina's aftermath is the theme, yet there are universal concepts which resonate throughout the film, such as honor, and love; kinship and pride, honesty and exploitation.

Does the employer get what's coming to him? Should MacArthur have beaten his employer up? Was he dead, or just injured? What is the proof for either scenario? What else could the men have done differently? Was the ending surprising, yet, realistic?

Post your response here, no later than Friday, August 29, 11:50 p.m. You can also share your personal stories about Hurricane Katrina. If you want to share links to music and videos that show the hip hop communities response, you can do so also. The primary assignment though is the written response to the film: Second Line. For those not familiar with the term, Second Line, it has to do with the "death march." In New Orleans, the band marches through town, pulling the hearse with the body...the mood is sad, somber, and then after the funeral the same band dances the family back home playing uplifting and celebratory music. Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6j_Fkh6YuI

With this in mind, think about the two brothers as they walked down the road at twilight after the murders. It was as if they were participants in a second line funeral march. Visit

After MacArthur's savings are stolen from his FEMA trailer, he and his cousin Natt take work gutting a house. The Second Line was a national finalist for the Student Academy Awards® and has played at Sundance, SXSW, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Comments:
In “The Second Line” by Geoffrey Quan Macarthur and Natt are cousins who are in search of jobs. Macarthur gets his savings stolen. Macarthur goes to his girlfriend asking if he can borrow her car because he just got robbed. Even though she lets him; she says that he is a cheat and a thief. This all takes place after Hurricane Katrina; that is how they find the job of cleaning a man’s home. The man agrees to give them ninety dollars a day yet he cheats them and says that hey both get ninety dollars rather than each. They begin the job and during the job they find money in a peanut jar which was that man’s savings. Natt says to keep it yet Macarthur returns the money. I think he does that because he realizes how much it can affect a person when they loose their savings. He didn’t except the man to cheat them after that. I don’t think it was because of the fact that they were different races. The employer was hiding the fact that the paid the two men from his wife. And the wife was acting differently around them. She would question Macarthur and they laughed at him when he asked for water.
When the wife of the man makes food for them Natt asks if the lady wants to keep a teddy bear and she says no and he keeps it. I think the employer does deserve what he gets because he doesn’t realize the situation that his employees were in and he just cheated them. He gets so drunk to the point where he is not able to take them home. So Macarthur attacks his employer and the employer’s wife tries to run away; Natt runs after her and both of them are taken into their trailer. In there they kill both husband and wife. They try to run off with their car but it does not work so they run back home. At the end it seems as Macarthur feel guiltier than Natt.
Hurricane Katrina was a disaster that devastated everyone especially ones living there. I really didn’t understand how life was for the people until I watched this; I was able to learn that it was very difficult. People weren’t able to live the same life they did before because they didn’t have anything left. The homes were ruined by the water so everyone seemed to live in trailers. Not all people were used to it so they reacted differently to it and it seemed to have ruined most lives. Just like Macarthur and Natt there were probably many more lives that were changed because of the disaster. Most people probably learned a side of themselves that they never knew about because they probably did things they’ve never done before. These two boys ended up killing two people because of their shortage for money. That might have been something they have never done before.

In the short film The Second Line directed by John Magary, the setting takes place in New Orleans, after the incident of Hurricane Katrina. The story line presents two cousins that had fortunately survived the hurricane and are currently living under poverty. Both were located around a trailer park and surrounded by other residents in New Orleans. Unfortunately, after the incident, there were no help from others. The only way to survive was to find a job, which was rarely offered. As for Macarthur and his cousin, Natt, they were offered a job by a man with a house that was damaged by the hurricane and needed to be cleaned out. The owner of the house offered $90/day to Macarthur and Natt, in order to clean the house. As the two began working, Natt happened to found about $300 in a peanut can, which then Macarthur politely returns to the owner. Just as they were nearly finished, the owner pays both of the men $90. Macarthur believed that each was going to be given $90, however, the owner refused to pay both. Macarthur became furious, which resulted into violence. The two cousins began beating the two owners of the house and finally escaped, leaving them with a bad conscious.
In a way, I believed the employers did get what was coming for them. Although Macarthur was furious with one of the owner of the house because he was not paid correctly, it was not right for him to take away an innocent life of a human being that was going through the same situation as he was. The people of New Orleans were all going through similar difficulties. Unfortunately, the owner of the man proclaimed that he did not have enough money to pay both of the employees. I believe if Macarthur were to put himself in that situation, he would also have that conscious of saving his money for his own needs and pay what he is able to pay for the employees he hired. The film significantly presented equality.
The director, John Magary, did an excellent job on presenting an idea of what life was for those who were suffering after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The lighting of the film was dim and did not provide a high definition quality, however it allowed the audience a sense of the atmosphere. No visual affect was used, which allowed the audience to have an idea of what New Orleans was really like. The locations also provided a visual of what the lifestyle of New Orleans was after the hurricane. Throughout the entire film, the director did allow a connection of realism. The story line was real because it connected to what is going on today. Everyday in the news and media, many have reported a high rate of crime and suffering. I believe the director wanted to capture the audience attention to what was going on around them. This film was entitled to inform the audience about those who were and still are suffering from Hurricane Katrina. I believe with its quality and story-line of the film, the director fulfilled the concept.

The characters are two young men who are left homeless after Hurricane Katrina. They live in an area of poverty. The two main character’s Macarthur and Natt, become very upset when Macarthur’s money is stolen. A nice middle age Caucasian man comes and offers them a job of 90 dollars, but Macarthur misinterprets his words and thinks that he is paying the boys 90 dollars each, he gives up the money to his cousin, and becomes very angry when he finds out he has to walk home. So he ends up killing the Caucasian man and his wife.

I think that when the characters were hired for the job, they were excited because they needed the money. The symbols portrayed in this film are the teddy bear and the toy machete sword. I think that the Caucasian couple had a child but was killed in the hurricane, which is why the wife of the man told Natt he could keep the teddy bear. This symbolizes how much people have lost in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The people in New Orleans did not only lose homes and money, but they also lost loved ones. I think that Macarthur was extremely upset when his money was stolen but he gave the money found in the peanut can back to his employer because he knew it was the right thing to do.

This film is about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and what life is like for the people who have lost their homes and loved ones, they become more irritated because life is not as easy as it was before the hurricane. This makes it harder for people to earn money and get their homes back because everything is gone, which makes the people upset because they are not used to living in poverty.

I do not think the employer deserved to die, just like the main character’s he also have lost his home and is also living in poverty just like Macarthur and Natt. The ending was not that surprising because the director foreshadowed the killing during the scenes where Macarthur was talking to his employer. He was always angry after speaking with his employer. At the end of the film as they were walking back home, they felt guilty. He should not have killed the man just because he was upset.

This film was based upon two males that were related as cuzins in a desperate need of survival. The aftermath of hurricane Katrina showed viewers a visual of how New Orleans look today. The young men Macarthur and Natt were paid only ninety dollars for hard labor by a married couple. In this film there were many visuals of homes that were distroyed during hurricane katrina. When watching this film I felt sympathy for the people who lost their homes due to the hurricane tragedy. The employer treated both Macathur and Natt as typical men; rather than showing them respect for even trying to make a living after the disaster. Both cuzins were paid ninety dollars to split among eachother. I feel like the employer should have treated Macathur and Natt like employees are suppose to be treated. The employer got what was coming to him; I believe you reak what you sow. The ending was very much so realistic because there were two young men taken for granted and were tired of being taken advantage of. Although there was violence, I understand why; there werent taken serious enough by the employer especially by knowing both were victims of hurricane Katrina. I completely understand why they were angry and took their aggression out on the couple. Money was involved and when there is a downfall when it comes down to money people dont hesitate to get their point across even if violence is involved and they needed the money to survive.

The movie " The Second Line" takes place in New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The scene starts in a trailer park where many of the victims of Hurricane Katrina were relocated. Although these families were living in trailers it appeared that they still cared about themselves and their homes. The environment was clean and without chaos, there were kids playing and mothers preparing for their day and parenting their children, even under these circumstances.

There are two main characters in this movie who are cousins named, Macarthur and Matt they appears to be in their early twenties. Macarthur is the main character and at the opening of the movie he discovers that his life savings was stolen from his trailer and he becomes angry and determined to find out who stole it from him. As Macarthur planned to seek his revenge on the person who stole his money a White man pulls up out of no where and offered him and his cousin work. The man took them to his home which had been destroyed and badly damaged in the hurricane. He took them inside and the place was destroyed, no work had been done on the house so all of the hazards that were there initially remained. The man didn’t have the desire to clean it himself and offered to pay the cousins $90 a day to gut the house. The cousins took the job. The man supplied them with one hazard mask and said he would get them another one, but he never did. While gutting the house Matt found $300 in a peanut can and happily and eagerly gave it to Macarthur and told him it was a gift from God and would replace some of the money that was stolen from him. Macarthur took the money but unknowingly to Matt he returned the money to the owner of the house. The owner took the money stuffed it in his pocket in an attempt for his wife to not see it, thanked Macarthur and went back inside his trailer. After they finished their job for the day Macarthur asked the man for water for him and his cousin the man obliged and decided to pay them for the work they had completed. Instead of paying them $90 each he gave them $90 total. Macarthur accepted this and the man fed them and informed them that he was too drunk to take them back home and offered to let them spend the night.Macarthur snapped and used a machete to kill the man as he was beating the man the cousin grabbed the wife and they killed her too. Matt never knew how the owner of the house had mistreated them because Macarthur never told him.

The choices that Macarthur made were terrible chioces, but he was clearly pushed to the edge and he snapped. At the same time he cousin did what he thought was right, which was to help his cousin. A very sad ending.

In the movie two brothers, Mac and Natt are living in a trailer park because of hurricane Katrina. A white male comes and offers the two work, this after Mac found out that he was robbed. Mac and Natt work thinking their going to be getting paid ninety dollars each, but instead the man only pays them ninety for them to share. Natt asked the man’s wife do she want a stuffed rabbit found in the house where they were working and she hesitantly turns him down. I think that the stuffed animal must have belonged to the couple’s child that must have been killed in the hurricane. After their done working they asked the man to take them home but he can’t because he is to drunk to drive. Mac is mad at the man already for only giving them ninety to share and now the man wants them to stay the night at his house because they can’t ride with him home. Mac snaps and attacks the man because I guess he feels like the man isn’t treating him and Natt right. Natt doesn’t know that the man only gave them ninety to share and he don’t know whats going on. Mac, I believe he killed the man because he just couldn’t take any more stuff that day. He had his money stole, worked a whole lot only for forty five dollars and then he aint have no way home and he just couldn’t take it anymore. He had found some money in a peanut can, but being a good person he gave it to the man because it didn’t belong to him. I see it as him being nice to other people but not getting anything in return and he couldn’t take it anymore.

In watching this movie Second Line, I do believe that the boss Hennry does deserve what was coming to him. During Macarthur and Natt’s first few hours there Macartur was working with no mask to cover the intoxicating fumes from his lungs, after repeatedly asking for one. Both Macartur and Natt could have handled things differently. Such as telling the guy there was a miss understanding of the payment they were promised, or asked if he could give more money since they knew he had it from the peanut jar. The ending to me was surprising, hands down. I thought, well this guy is so nice but he is letting this guy walk all over him. The thing that made the ending to me very realistic is the fact that people go through this all the time, getting mistreated from not nessicerily bosses but higher authority, not having enough money to live off of and thinking day after day is this how my life is going to be or am I going to do something about it?

“Shady Business”
Two cousins named Macarthur and Natt woke up one morning and realized that someone had stolen $600 from Macarthur. You could see that Macarthur was troubled and that he had to find a way to replace what was missing. So as the two cousins tried to find a way to work they came across a gentleman by the name of Henry who wanted them to gut out his house and dump everything. So as the two did what they were employed to do the two come across a peanut can with $300 in it. Being the honest person Macarthur is he greatfully gives the money back knowing he could have kept it. As he is giving the money back he simply asks the boss ( Henry) to give him a mask so that the dust and dirt from the debris does not get into him. Macarthur can tell that this may not work because of the non-shalont approach that the boss has. He finally asks for the payment for the two and the boss gives him $45 apiece when they thought they were getting $90 a piece. So Macarthur kindly keeps his composure even though the look on his face shows deception and goes back to his cousin and gives him the whole $90 and keeps his comments to himself. While eating the cousin Natt ask the boss and wife if he could keep a stuffed rabbit to give to his mother because he knows she will like it. As the two are finished eating they ask for a ride home and the boss tells them to stay the night due to too much drinking. Macarthur flips out and grabs a machete and commences to hack away at the boss while the cousin chases down the wife. The cousin Natt nor the wife know what is going on but the cousin Natt does not let his cousin go along showing his honor for his loved one. As Macarthur butchers the husband they leave out running and he drops the machete and tries to steal the broke down car that got them there.
If I were Macarthur I would have done the same thing. I think that if the boss had been up front that it wouldn’t have ended like it did. Though the both of the cousins portray themselves as gentleman who is just trying to make it and they are screwed over by the employer. We make unfortunate decisions but don’t think of the consequence until it is too late.

In the movie The Second Line, the main character MacArthur feels hopeless after his savings were stolen. And he wants to tell his mother, but finally he does not. The he gets a job, it is gutting a house. But the problem is, he has no money for transit. He tries to borrow his girlfriend’s car, but the car is not work. For him, getting a job is a way to solve his income problems. He is glad to have this job, even though his daily wage is cheap. And he works with his cousin, Natt. Natt finds some money in a can, MacArthur remembers that money is his savings. But he still return the money to his employer, he feels hesitant when he gives the money to the guy. And then, the employer pays ninety dollars for both of them, not ninety dollars each. MacArthur gives all the money to his cousin, he never tell Natt that the employer lies to them. At that time, MacArthur becomes to be mad. At lunch time, Natt asks the wife of the employer for the teddy bear, he wants to take this to his mother. That shows the lower class live hardly and they don’t have extra money to buy this kind stuff. Even for the living, they don’t have house, they just live in a truck. And when the employer asks them to work out time, MacArthur pick up the machete that Natt finds before to kill the employer. People will do whatever terrible thing when they have no any ways to go. At the road they run away, MacArhur tears, that the life makes him that, nobody wants to kills other, just the life.

“The Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina”
Mac and his cousin Matt are victims of Hurricane Katrina; they have no jobs, no help from the government, Mac life savings were stolen. Some man comes and offers Mac and his cousin Matt a job paying $90 a day. As Mac and his Cousin were cleaning out his house they recovered $300.00, turned it in to the boss. When it was time for Mac and Matt to get paid he only gave them $90 to split (he should have told them that from the start that it would only be 90 to split). The employer knew when he wanted to hire some people to clean his house he only had a small budget to work with. Yes, he did have a little something coming to him but not death. Mac and Matt could have handled the situation better, possibly a talking to or a verbal threat. The ending seems realistic to me, for one the boss cheated them out of their money, (even after Mac recovered his $300.00 he could have kept the money and still asked for the day’s pay. Mac being loyal and respectful did the right thing. However the boss didn’t. I can see why his anger got the best of him. Here Mac and Matt are working for $90 a day cleaning out an infested house that takes more than two men, with no working mask and no tools. Killing the boss is understandable, you are victims of a hurricane you have no money, no food, or good working water no help from the government living in a cold trailer with probably no heat. Thinking about all that, plus the man that hired you was completely disrespectful, rude and cheated them out of what was rightfully theirs. That eventually takes a toll on your mind. Mac filter got full and he snapped.

In the short film, The Second Line by John Magary, a short film based on the damage of Hurricane Katrina and the affects that it had on what once was a community. Hurricane Katrina has tooken place three years ago and yet it seems as if all its damaged happened last week. There are so many stories that could have been shown, but The Second Line gives a general example of people who were apart of Hurricane Katrina living in a state of suffer, depression, hunger, anger and deprivation. I have personally heard stories from my family and friends and watching this movie, made me able to relate personally, because it hit home. The two main characters, Natt and Macarthur, who are cousins give it a humourous tone and dramatic. The movie starts off, with showing how people will do anything to get what they feel Katrina owes them. Some stranger comes into Macarthur's FEMA trailer and stills his secret money stash. So he go looks for the crazy character who stole his money, which leads to failure when they meet a man who gives them work so they can get money. They do not even know the guy, but yet they are willing to hop into his car without thinking that they will be in harm. After they work and work, Macarthur realizes that they have been cheated, when the man gives them $45 each instead of $90 each. The man says he does not have it, while him and his wife are sitting in a nice trailer with food and electricity. Only MAcarthur knows t this, his anger becomes greater by the day as he can't breathe in the house full of bad air because of the water damage causing low air quality. As, the day goes by and it is getting gloomier, MAcarthur has reached a point where his balloon popped and he exploded and took all his anger out on the man, who gave them the work. Everybody was at shock, everybody except Macarthur when he just went off and killed the man by beating him with one of the man's metal bar's. After, the damaged he caused, they slowly walked away back to a land of silence. BAck to their gloomy world, were they have to now call home.

In “The Second Line” by Geoffrey Quan, a man named Macarthur has his lifetime savings stolen. Macarthur has a cousin named Natt and they are both in search of jobs. He has a girlfriend that says he is a cheat and a thief. This event takes place after Hurricane Katrina. They find jobs cleaning a man’s home. They will get ninety dollars a day for cleaning the home but the owner cheats them because they don’t get ninety dollars each it is for them to share. They find money in a peanut jar in the owner’s home which is his life savings. They want to steal the money but Macarthur says it isn’t right because the same thing happen to him just days before. The employer and his wife have the two cousins over for dinner which was a big mistake because the two cousins decide to kill them. Hurricane Katrina made people go crazy and do things that they may have never done before all because of the devastating hurricane people were forced to do anything in order to survive.

So... "Second Line".
The movie is about two people of color, MacArthur and his friend (I forgot his name), surviving through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by accepting jobs that even risk their health. Hope rises as the two men receive work to clean up a house. Yet, even with the hard work MacArthur and his friend give, they don not receive the reward that they deserve. At the end, deseperate time comes for desperate measure.

The movie brought in a lot of emotions during each scene, mainly focusing on anger, frustration, depression, and even desperation. The music brings a somber and eerie tone through the duration. The way the location, which is Lower Ninth Ward, shows disaster and chaos. An example is when someone stole MacArthur's savings. During work, MacArthur and his friend discover savings from their employer. MacArthur returns the savings in honesty, hoping that the employer will give some to him in return. Unfortunately, nothing is given.

Trying not to spoil anything just in case someone new reads this and did not watch the movie: Personally, I had hoped that MacArthur and his friend would take another path then the one they had chose at the end of the movie. The ending was not surprising in some ways. The employer did not give MacArthur the amount he and his friend deserve. Personally, I will become angered by that type of action and try to persuade him, even if he did gave me a job. The movie shows us a more personal perspective of the victims of post-Katrina. The film shows us how people survive, how they live, and what they do to work. I will personally recommend the movie to my friend and other people as well.

In the Movie "The Second Line" by Geoffrey Quan MacArthur(main character) and Natt(Main Character) are cousins living in New Orleans(Scene)after Hurricane Katrina... Living in the lower-ninth ward in a trailer, providing for their family was difficult, and because Macarthur's savings were stolen getting a job was very important... They were offered a job from a man(Employer), who's house was wrecked from the hurricane... They were to clean and clear out the house... Because their need for a job was high they excepted... In the process of them cleaning,Macarthur found a peanut can with $300 in it. Natt told him to keep it, basically G-d is replacing your money that was taken. Knowing how it feels to get you money stolen,Macarthur returns it. After a days work the man pays Macarthur $90 and told him to split it between him and Natt. So that means $45 was there pay. It seemed as if the man was trying to hide the payment of the men from his wife. The man's wife cooked some food for the both of them and Natt had found a stuffed animal in the house. He asked if she wanted it and she said no you keep it. I think the reason why Macarthur was frustrated, because he returned the $300 he found, knowing how it felt to have his money stolen. Now for the man to pay them $45 each for a job that is risky and very dangerous,he was and felt cheated. In result of the man's(Employer)actions,Macarthur lost control of his anger ended up killing the man with a machete. The man's wife tried to run away but Natt caught up with her and took her in the trailer, where she was also killed. As Macarthur and Natt ran up the road,Macarthur stops and begins to cry. I think Macarthur was feeling bad for what he had done, and was probably thinking that he could have dealt with that situation a little different.

the film second line is about two cousins that are trying to get there lives back in order after hurricane katrina. there lives get more frustrating when they find out that they only money that they had left has been stolen. they search for a job then come across a guy who can help them if they help him. when they are hired mcarthur seems very loyal. he wants the money so he will get the job done. he even gave his employer some money that he found in his house while he was cleaning it up. he probably felt that he should take the money but then guilt would be laying on him the whole time.he doesnt want to be the guy that stole his money. but then he thot that his employer would give him a certain amount but then he found out that he was only geting half of what he thot his income would be. the teddy bear in the movie represented love and possibly hope. the machete represented pain and suffering and also retaliation. throughout the whole movie the mood was gloomy. cloudy skies and depressing faces. they were around nothing but ruins as well. very dirty landscape. macarther should have takn the money he found in the house and called that his employers payment towards him and his cousin nate. plus the other money that he was going to get anyway. he should have not killed the man and his girlfriend. now he has more guilt on his shoulders and he will remember that for the rest of his life. it is shown at the ending where they are walking down the street like zombies with very eerie music and mcarther starts to cry.

Macarthur's cousin says keep the money but he doesnt listen and gives back to the man. after a hard day of working the man only pays them ninety dollars for both. Macarthur doesnt want Natt to be mad at the man so he gives Natt all the money. when they ask the employer to take them home the man says that he's too drunk to drive. at this point Macarthur cant keep his anger inside him anymore, he explodes and attacks the man. at the end of the film, macarthur feel guilty for what he has done. the film shows that if you be nice to someone but you dont get anything in return except only the negative things then the anger inside you will build up and eventually you will explode and can't control youself.

A local man offers him and his cousin $90 apiece to clean out his damaged house. The man agrees to supply the needed equipment, but Macarthur soon finds out the man, isn't a man of his word. While cleaning, the cousins find some monet hidden a peanut jar. Natt votes to keep the money, but Macarthur decides to return it. When he returns the money he asks if they man had the masks that we was going to let them use.The man then makes up a lously excuse about why he doesnt habe the mask. shortly after, Macarthur asks the many about the money for the day. the man then hands Macarthur $90 in cash. He tels them to split the money because that was apart of the deal. Macarthur never split the money, instead he gives Natt the $90. Shortly after this incident, Macarthur and Natt call it a day and tells the man they are leaving, but not without a fight. He then attacks the amn and his wife with a machete. The short film then ends with Natt and Macarthur walking down the road into the sunset.

In the film Second Line two black men are bassically stood up. The movie is about two black males who have a job to help a white couple clean up their dirty house and they dont get their full earnings so the two black males did not take that to lightly. The setting is Hurricane Katrina. This storm killed lots of people. Macarthur and his cousin Natt clean the couples house without proper gear, tools or anything. Come to find out The two black males find 300 dollars in the house. They decide to be good citizens and return the money. The white man did not give Macarthur no reward or anything. Although all these bad things happen to the two black males the white man they were working for did not give them the whole salary he promised. So basically in conclusion the tone ended in horror and sadness. The two males went into the couples trailer and did something bad to them and that was the conclusion to Second Line.

In the movie Second line the producer showed the life of two main charters living in a trailer park after hurricane Katrina. In the movie the Mac Author who was one of the main charters saving was stolen. He needed to find work because he needed money and was not happy with the situation he was in. While he girlfriend was in the shower he went into her purse with out her knowing. She got out of the shower and called him a thief. He asked her if he could use her car and she respond no. Mac Author and his cousin tried to still her car and a white man pulled up and offered to pay them $90.00 for a days labor. Mac Author and his cousin agreed to the work. The employer wanted his home to be cleaned out, where the house was filled with mold from Hurricane Katrina. While cleaning out the home, Mac Author's cousin found $300.00 in a peanut can and gave it to Mac Author because he knew Mac Author needed the money due to his savings being stolen. Mac Author took the money back to the man, and asked for a mask. The man took the money said thank you, and acted as if he was going to look for the mask but turned back into his trailer. The employer gave Mac Author $90.00 for the work him and cousin did for the day. Mac Author and his cousin were both under the operation they were both getting paid $90.00, not is was forty five dollars each. I thought that was messed up to say the least. Mac Author had some integrity and loyal to his cousin because he gave him all the money, never letting on that they had been shamed, or hood winked. When it was time to go the employer was drunk and could not take them home and made a joke about them leaving. Saying we can sing songs and have a sleep over. That was it, it was the time that Mac Author had had enough and had a moment of temporary insanity, by dragging the employer in the trailer and beating him and his girlfriend. Leaving in a panic, and walking home together, the tone in the end of Second line was sober, there was no joy, it seemed to be death in the air. Maybe death of one's spirit. The only thing i kept thinking was oppression, and when does it in?

I found “2nd LINE” to be a very interesting short film. It was about a guy named Mac Arthur and his cousin, and the difficulties they endured post Katrina. Their main goal was to find a job to support his family and to become more stable in life. When someone went into Mac Arthur’s trailer and stole the only money they had the need for a job became more important.
A man came and offered Mac Arthur and his cousin a job to clean his house that had been destroyed in the hurricane. Because their need for money they accepted even though the job was risky to their health. Once they had finished the job they found out that the man (The employer) wasn’t going to pay them fairly and in result of it Mac Arthur became very angry. Later regretting what he had done Mac Arthur killed the man.
I think this film gives an image of what people are going through from the cause of Katrina. Hopefully the suffering and struggle they are going through will soon be over.
