Interviews...cyber-post

Yes, I know it's late, so if you don't see it until tomorrow post your summary then :-)
We interviewed each other today and then students introduced their peers to the class. We will continue with the oral part of the presentation Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Homework is to bring in a draft of your papers. Everything is a draft, some you turn in because it's due, but for all intents and purposes, a writer can always see the work in a new light. The final draft can be posted with planning sheet, and outline by Friday at 12 noon. You can turn it in on Thursday, Sept. 25, but you will not be penalized if you turn it in the next day.

Please let me know if you are planning to attend the Beat Box event at La Pena on Thursday, Sept. 25. You can respond at the post or call me.

Interview summary

I interviewed Dion earlier, and he's a cool person. He dresses like a normal guy would. Black sneaker, dark blue jean, black T-shirt, and black hat. Something that I wouldn't know about him that he told me was that he could Beat-box. Also, he speak and write English, a little bit of Spanish. It's his second year in college, and he's here to get a AA degree, or transfer. The season he favor most is summer because the days are longer in summer. The books that took his breath away were Jurassic Park, and Congo.

Today in class I interviewed Barry Maes. I really enjoyed the interview, because we shared many laughs with each other. I learned so much more from the interview than I learned from sitting behind him in class everyday. We started the interview by telling something about ourselves that the other person would not have known unless they were told. Barry told me that he likes to travel. We didn’t go into detail of the place he has gone but I’d love to find out. The only language that he can read and write in is English. Barry says that he wasn’t exposed to many other languages. We then went on to talk about school and our purpose for being here. I learned this is his third semester here at COA, and he is planning to transfer to a 4 year art institution. Our next question asked what is our favorite season and why? He then went on to tell me that enjoys spring, summer and fall, but doesn’t like winter. Barry’s not a big fan of the rain and cold weather either. We ended the interview with the most recent book that took our breath away. He enjoyed reading Frankenstein by Mary? The overall assignment was really fun. I especially liked how we learned more about each other as a class, and was interested in the same things.

Today in class I interviewed a nice lady that goes by the name of Jamila Brown. I really enjoyed the interview it was fun. She basically look like a normal woman from what I can tell you know hair pass the shoulders, a nice blouse and some jeans and some open toe shoes, regular, cool person. One thing that I wouldn’t know if she didn’t tell me is that she has a 14 year old son. She only looks like she in her middle twenties. She only knows one language that English, I could have guessed that. This is not her first college course, she done this before; maybe she can tell me something about this college thing. She wants to get her A.A. degree and go off to a state university to pursue something in film. Her favorite season happens to be summer, she says she like the warmth, I don’t know why. The book she says that took her breath away was a book called “The Memoirs of Lynn Harris” she like it because he expressed himself freely.

Today I interviewed Will Johnson and he was a really pleasant young man. He has a calm demeanor and we communicated well. Mr. Johnson takes pride in his appearance because he was well groomed. I couldn’t tell that Will is a poet by looking or speaking to him but that’s what he does and he enjoys it. English is his only language that he speaks and reads in but he also knows a little Spanish. This is his freshman year here at the College of Alameda, he chose to come here because he likes the city, and he wants to obtain an AA and then transfer. He is a winter baby (December) so that’s why he enjoys the winter season because of his birthday celebration! I’m also a winter baby but I can’t stand the cold! The book Hamlet took his breath away because of the surprising deaths in the story.

Class Interview

Today I interviewed Isaiah. He is an 18 year old African American.Isaiah has a very beautiful kool-aid smile that is literally infectious. When you see his smile it makes you want to smile. He was well groomed and represented the clothing line Coogi really well.

He identified himself as sadistic (in a fun way), because he likes to make fun of people in his mind. He also shared that he has never been arrested and feels that this is an accomplishment. He speaks one language which is english and knows this because when he hear other languages he doesn't understand it. I thought his explanation made good sense. He has taken college courses before at CAL State East Bay. He chose to attend COA because he wanted to finish his freshman year at a different college. He describes himself as a mental wonderer and he is into the beauty of the world. Which is why spring is his favorite time of season. He could not remeber the last book he read that took his breath away.

I really enjoyed talking with Isaiah, his demenaor was very positive and he was quite intelligent.I can also tell that he has a great sense of humor, which I'm sure we'll see more of as we all get to know each other better.

Interview

Today in class, I interviewed Albert aka Al, he would prefer more. He dressed casual for a very hot day with a blue button up, black slacks, "Stacy Adams" shoes and a nice smile. I found out that Al is "very" spontaneous, actually unpredictable, and he has high blood pressure, something I would not have known unless he told me. Crazy! Al writes and speaks in english fluently. He picked up some spanish from a former job where he had to use his bilangual skills. Since he has been out of High school for 5 years, he attended Merrit College in 2003, when he realized he needed to be in a new environment. The favorite season of his, would be the summer; Party, party, party! Can't forget that his summer is also in the season of his birthday, even more celebration. He also loves the winter, he say "the season of love" awww how romantic. Al as I can see enjoys reading, that last book that he read that had him breathless was "Holler if You Hear Me", by Nathan Mcall. It interested him that the author came from the streets, but he did not let that stop him to do something positive with his life.

This is his third year and he wants to transfer to Cal State Eastbay. His favorite season is summer because of break. He hasn't read anything lately.

This is his 2nd course in College of Alameda, he choose College of Alameda, because he lives in Alameda, close to college. He likes summer, because he likes hot weather and he can ride his bike all the time. Interviewee: Melissa Mah

One look at Melissa Mah and something about her you would most likely not know about her is her name. Also, the fact that she is the eldest child of three. Melissa Mah can speak two languages, including English. The other language is French, which she was able to learn through experiences in French class. This has not been Melissa's first college class for she has taken plenty before. The reason why she participates at the College of Alameda is because of her school, the Alameda Science and Technology Institute, which provides college credits for high school students. One of Melissa's favorite season would have to be Winter because she enjoys the rain and the less risk of obtaining allergies. A recent book that has taken her breath away, she says would have to be Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.

Just by looking at teen Dalena Tran you would not know what her name is and unlike other Asian students, she does not want to follow the medical path. She acquired the skills of reading and writing in Cantonese from her old school, and she know the English language because she was born ere in America. This is not her first college course, and she is taking classes here at the college because of her unique school Alameda Science and Technology Institute, where you are required to attend classes at the College of Alameda. She enjoys the winter season because of the cool air on her face and when she breathes. A recent book that she has read and had taken her breath away is Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer.

She does interpretive sign language and some what does praise dance. She is from Chattanooga, Ten and wants to major in Social work when she goes to Cal state Hayward. They both speak and read English but she also speaks Spanish and does signing. She went to school for sign language and she learned Spanish in high school. Today in class I interview Sara. What you would never know about her is that does not listen much to music. She only language is English, and how she became so skillful in her language is listening to others speaks around her. She has taken other courses at other colleges, but taken this course here at College of Alameda is close to home and easier to get to, especially since fall is her favorite season and it falls on her birthday. Sara’s latest book read is Kite Runner.

I have enjoyed interviewing Sara, she is a nice person, and just by speaking with her she seems very smart and intelligent.

Interview Summary

A couple of days ago I had the prevledge to interview Lisa Ryan and all I can say about her is that she is a really cool and collected person. she was wearing casual clothing with black glasses and and finished it off with the diamond necklace and the gucci. She has a love for little dogs (puppy's) wich is a nice thing little dogs tend to bring back good memories. She speaks only English because that is the language spoken at home, work, and she cant understand any other language. Thius isnt her first time taking a college course she did some work at Merrit College so she can help people with drug problems; She also picked C.O.A (College Of Alameda) because the location was convient. She told me that her favorite season is Autmn (fall), the very point in the year when te leaves turn brown and fall to the earth; It always reminds her of happier times when the leaves fall off. She cant remember the last book she read that took her breath away.

Lisa is your typical all around genuine person with a good mind and a great sence of fashion; I think well all enjoy having her around

Student Interviews

I had the pleasure to interview two of my class mates, Peter Domingues and Kim Willson. Both speak and write in English and love the summer time for different reasons. Kim likes it because that is when her birthday is, and Peter likes that time of year because of the weather. This is also not either of their first College class. Peter chose the College of Alameda so that he could get his A.D and go to CSU. Kim came to this College after transferring from Laney to get her GE. The last book Kim had read that took her breath away was “The last call”, which is a book about 9/11 and firefighters. The last book Peter had read that took his breath away was “Holler if you hear me”. I think that every one in the class should meet these two because if you get to talk to them you would see that they are very interesting people.

In class, I interviewed Joshua. He told me a little about himself, as I did. He is 18 years old and is attending College of Alameda. The reason why he is attending COA is because he doesn't want to have any distractions and feels like COA is more independent for him. It's away from people who might be able to distract him in school. He went school in Oakland, and resides in Oakland. Josh is a lean back person and I think that people should get to know him.
