Prepping for the 1st Essay

Today we reviewed the answers for the exercises on paraphrasing. We did a few together and then completed the rest in groups. We didn't get to discuss Literature Circles in the early class, but for the afternoon class, we did. Students decided who would take on what roles and then read aloud to each other from Dreams from My Father's House.

No one wanted to share their freewrite in either class, so post them here. If you'd like feedback on an assignment, print a copy and give it to me in class and I will read it and give it back. You can do this pre-post or after-post. Remember, the afternoon class meets in the Library, Feb. 9, 1 p.m. with Professor Jane McKenna.

Keep doing the exercises in Pidd. We are in Part 2. Continue to page 32. We will write a sample essay in class on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in groups, then you will write the first draft at home, bring to class for a peer review.

Monday we will continue the Lit Circles and practice the literal and free paraphrase, along with how to cite using MLA.

I have office hours tomorrow afternoon L-235. I am available after 10 a.m. if you want to talk. Call me and I'll tell you where I am on campus. Study groups are a good idea, I can host one on Thursdays, 12-1 p.m., for interested students.

Comments:
Paraphrasing is a good skill to use because you are not taking other people’s idea and using it as your own. By changing their sentence structure and replacing their words with other synonyms, it is paraphrasing. If you change the sentence structure around, it is literal paraphrase which is also another form of plagiarism, because you didn’t change words into other synonyms. The point of literal paraphrase is to learn how to rephrase a sentence.

When a writer paraphrases various written documents, this process provides an understanding of the written documentation in an individual's own words. Paraphrasing challenges the writer to put forth the effort in knowing what the reading was about. When an individual copy work that has already been acknowledged there is no gain from the copier. Paraphrasing basically challenges the mind to THINK.

Paraphrasing is a good skill to possess because you're not stealing someone's thoughts and taking full credit for someone's work. The point of literal paraphrase is not copying word for word from someone's and using your own words but having the same point. It's similar to plagiarizing. Plagiarizing is copying word for word and literal paraphrasing is replacing the words with synonyms.

Free write: why is paraphrasing a good skill to process? What is the point of the literal paraphrase if it is a form of plagiarism?

Paraphrasing is a good skill because we will be working on it more in articles, essays, reports etc. Paraphrasing is a good way to know the difference between literal paraphrases. Paraphrase is rearranging the structure of sentences, and replacing the writers phrase with synonyms. Literal paraphrase is replacing words and phrase but keeping the same sentence structure. Literal paraphrase is something not to do because it’s similar to plagiarism and you can’t plagiarize because that’s stealing someone work and using it as your own.

Free Write: Paraphrase

Paraphrasing is a good skill to have to avoid plagiarism. Taking credit from someone’s original work is unacceptable. Although literal paraphrase is a form of plagiarism, it is better to change words and phrases in a sentence than to copy something word for word.

Paraphrasing is a good skill because it helps or make you think about what other words you can use to replace the words given. It also makes you rewrite the whole sentence in a different way. When you paraphrase it makes your sentence or paragraph shorter also. Literal paraphrasing is plagiarism. You simply replace words with synonyms, but is also effective for developing rephrasing skills.

I paraphase to avoid using the same word's from documents.Paraphrasing is helpful to me when i want to rewrite something in my way. It is a tool to prevent you from plagarism. The purpose of paraphrasing is to rearange sentence structure and explain in differnet ways.

Paraphrasing

By paraphrasing another author's words it shows that you understand their their opinions. Understanding their words enough, that you can write it in your own words without changing the meaning of the sentences. If you are not paraphrasing then you are plagiarizing
the writer's work, word by word which is illegal. Or people try to get away with plagiarism by replacing the author's words with similar words that mean the same thing. There is also Literal paraphrasing, when you replace the author's words and phrase, but the sentence structure stays the same.
