Essay 2...homework for Monday's class

In the afternoon class we had a chance to read two chapters from Felicia Pride, "I Ain't Mad at Cha" (171) and "Stop the Violence" (120-121). We had an extended conversation about "violence" and how this characteristic was typical in American culture, especially when defining what it means to be a man.

Students were asked to identify the thesis, which I'm not certain anyone responded to. In the second Felicia Pride reflection, we defined words like: misogyny, reminisced, metamorphosis, deteriorate, and feisty. We agreed that this reflection was about change, a process that happens as we grow older, and there is nothing we can do to stop it in ourselves or in others.

The assignment was to reflect on the topic and then look at the topic as reflected in the character Obama's life up to now. How is change a theme in the book? How is the character changed in certain situations mentioned in the book, and how does he change others? Are some changed voluntary or forced, which ones? What is the outcome in these circumstances?

Students only had to respond to one chapter. Post your freewrites here.

After we did the freewrite and listened to the Tupac song, the other wasn't audible, we went over the Essay 2, and I assigned students a error to develop into a paragraph. Homework is to complete the essay, type it, and complete the check list. Bring to class for a peer review.

Other homework for both classes is to continue reading Dreams up to chapter 8. Write another short 3-4 paragraph essay on another value Obama learns from a woman. You can continue with the woman you already explored earlier, plus introduce another woman you meet in the next section of the book. This woman should not be a relative. Post the essay in the same place you posted the other assignment. Don't forget to respond to another student's essay.

Make sure you practice paraphrasing and using direct citations: one per paragraph.

Oh, bring your books to class. The Message is a book we will take our freewrite topics from.

Extra Credit
Miriam brought in a poem of a favorite woman write who wrote in the 15th century to share. She read the Spanish and Sabah read the English translation. I'll post the poem at the comment here once I get it plus Miriam's comments about the poet and why she likes the poem. This is an extra credit assignment.

Homework
I enjoyed reading your freewrites on your mothers. Sabah is the only student who wrote an essay reflecting on women and values they taught Obama. We are on essay 2 now in this exploration, do not get behind. Also, Sabah is the only student who posted two reflections on women whom she admires: the first was her mother, the second is her aunt. I want three posts each week. They do not have to be about different women, you can add to your reflections on the same person. I'm sure many of you could write a book about your mothers. Make sure you comment on another student's comment.

In Felica Pride's reflection on the song "I Ain't Mad at Cha" by Tupac, she talks about how people change through the years. The friends you used to do bad things with are no longer the same and some have changed for the better, even yourself. Back in the days, like middle school, I associated with the wrong crowd and got into a lot of trouble and somehow we all drifted our separate ways. Most of us changed for the better and some are still up to no good. Some of us would bump into each other from time to time but it's a different feeling when we do, we're no longer close like we once were. In Barrack Obama, Dreams From my Father, he associated with some people that weren't really good. He's done drugs and drank but he changed and changed for the better. Look at him now, he's the president of the United States.

Write about a woman that you look up to

A woman that I look up to is my auntie Katy. The reason why I look up to her is because she does everything. She graduates from college, while working full time and taking care of the family. She has her bachelor’s degree and she’s going back to school to get her master’s degree. Now she goes to school, work, cook dinner every night and go to the gym. I love my auntie Katy and she makes me feel like I can do anything and be anything I want to. She is an amazing woman. Whenever things gets hard I just think about my aunt Katy and I know I can do anything when I put my mind into it.

Responds to Martin Luther King JR letter

It’s crazy how they treated African American people just because the color of their skin. Dr Martin Luther King JR was a strong man; he went through them locking him up for a long time and hurting our people and him without violent. I know people say violent isn’t the answer, but if you do my family and friends and me wrong that’s going to be my answer. As I was reading his letter I was thinking to myself how amazing it is how educated he was growing up in those days, I know it was heard seeing that whites and blacks wasn’t equal and couldn’t be and the same college, you would think that the white people wouldn’t allow the black be to be as educated as he was. He went to Birmingham to do what he believes in and that was to bring justice for African American and he die doing what he believe in.

Summary of Inauguration of President Barack Obama
Page 2

The paragraph I had to summarize is on page 2 and it starts off saying “This time has come”.
When I read the paragraph, I feel that what President Barack Obama is saying that everybody need to chose a better life and we all are all are equal and free. After Obama said that, he start talking about everybody have to change history and that it’s not going to be easy, we all have to work at it. Obama gives the listeners a little history lesson when he started talking about the founding fathers of the country and how they worked hard in sweat and blood to create a foundation for us. Our country has almost hit the bottom and Obama feels that we all need to come together to rebuilt our nation over. Then, Obama start naming the things we have to rebuild like our economy which is the biggest one and also jobs. The final key point Obama said in that paragraph was how the people that say the things he’s going to change, he can’t; Obama was telling them that he can, we can and it’s been done before.

Barack Obama Influence by His mother

Obama is influent by his mother and they share many values. One of the values that they share is their bond. Obama states “our bond unbroken”. Obama always look for his mother for help and she was always there and he made sure he seen his mother every day. Obama mother is a kind woman and help people that are in need of help. Obama mother raise a man without a father and because of that I would say she is a strong woman.

The thesis on Felicia Pride's reflection is change. Some people change for the better and some for the worst. You might feel distance from your friends when they change. Scared that you might lose a friendship. You might get jealous of people who settled down for marriage and kids while you're still on step one on the streets. We have no control over other people's decisions. There's no point in getting mad at them. We should look on the positive side and support them.

I ain’t mad at cha

The song is all about the changes that a man has in his/her life. Everyone changes in his/her life. These changes can be good or bad. The changes can take them to better life or the worst life. They will have their destiny by these changes. We must not be mad at these changes. Yes, but its true that human are selfish by nature. They want their close people be the same always. They want them to be shared with anyone. But change is the rule of nature. As a year increases in men’s life they will gain some qualities and loose some qualities. A good girl can change into the strip dancer. People who were into the drugs are now having their family with them. But singer says that not all people love these changes. They cannot see their friend to be changed only because of the fear of loosing them. If his friend got married he wouldn’t be as before to him. But singer also tells that a true friend will help you to go through these changes thinking that his friend is growing. Life is really short. We must spent it with happiness. We must experience the changes. We must go ahead in life. Everything is valuable in this world and the most valuable thing is words from a friend. In Barrack Obama’s life, he could have many bad changes too. He could be frustrated to the white men ruling society and go into the drugs. But he always had the good changes. He changed himself to be forward. He changed himself to search the reality. He changed and he proved that this world is equal for all the races. Now he is the president of USA. This is called change for the better.

“Stop the Violence” by Felicia Pride

I think the thesis of this is poem “Stop the Violence” is a plea to end the bloodshed in hip-hop.” The theme of this poem is to stop the violence when they are young, so it can prevent them from being violent when they get older. In “Dreams from My Father,” Obama is trying to change the community, and help others that are in need. As a president, Barack Obama is trying to stop the violence in this world.
