Nepal: A Girl's Life

After watching this video, it showed me how much the kids in Nepal wanted to learn and how excited Sabina was to go off to school. When she's not in school, she's helping her parents break rocks. I see many kids take advantage of education and when I watched Sabina, someone who wants to learn, makes me feel bad that she can't get the same kind of education we get here in America. The social entrepreneur is John Wood. He first visited Nepal in 1998 while he was working with Microsoft. What caught his attention was how empty the libraries were there. He came back to Nepal with eight donkeys full of books. John started an organization called Room to Read.

Mexico: Business of Saving Trees

The social entrepreneur is Pati Ruiz Corso. The problem that she discovered was that the existing trees in Mexico were filled with carbon gases that the people of the community inhale throughout the day. She says that the toxic air comes from the cars and the big factories. She called this organization the Sierra Gorda Biosphere. The relationship that Corso had with the community reminded her of the days when she had lived in the city but soon moved to the country because she was sick the growing success it had and wanted some of that success to be where it needed it the most. She decided to address this issue because she realized that the community where she came from was full of trees and full of carbon gas and if that was the wood that a family needs to cook with for dinner, then it's too toxic. She knew that even living in the trees presence was bad especially for the younger kids who had their whole life ahead of them in this community. The community is a big fan of how Pati has handled this situation. They applaud her and thank her for the possibly the lives she could be saving and most importantly the trees she's saving. By planting new trees, she's giving the community fresher air and a longer life. The community backs her up 100 percent and helps with the planting of new trees.

He confronts the problem of orphaned and unfortunate kids not being able to see the world through music and not being able to play musical instruments. 2)Trevor Field-Play Pump

In this Social entrepeneur story, Trevor Field is the hero. He is a retired advertising executive who wanted to give millions of African access to clean, fresh drinking water. He noticed that in many rural villages around the eastern Cape, the burden of collecting water fell mainly to the women and girls of the household. Each morning, he'd see them set off to the nearest borehole to collect water. They used leaky and often contaminated hand-pumps to collect the water, then they carried it back through the bush in buckets weighing 40 pounds. It was exhausting and time-consuming work so Fields came up with an invention called the Play Pump International.
Fields relationship to the community was that he put it so that when the kids wanted fresh drinking water they would have to push a merry-go-round in order to get it. He reserves a spot for the national loveLife campaign, which helps educate children about HIV and AIDS. Mr. Fields wants to build thousands of these pumps to help water-stressed communities across South Africa, then expand to other African countries.

Yet India is also home to some of the world's most advanced high-technology firms, and New Delhi is Silicon Valley East. This is why Dr. Sugata Mitra decided to give them free unlimited access to a computer and the internet. Mitras campaign was documented in a another trip to India where they put in more kiosks in poor communities. Mitra tries to bring education, technology, and computer literacy(something we all take for granted) and bring it to the "forgotten" children. Mitra takes his hole in the wall experiment to a fishing village in the rural state of Maharashtra where the children run to the computer like it's a fountain of life. Mitra is convinced that computers can bring prosperity to poor, rural areas and provide local jobs using this "new" technology.

The cataract disease is all over in Tibet, and on this video there is this Tibet family’s father has no vision for a long time. He has been saying for four years that he will be blind forever but Dr. Marc Lieberman finally saved his life, and now he could see the world.

In 1996, the clinic did their first eye camp in the country’s remote areas where cataract disease is rampant. Since their first eye camp in 1996, they have done 12 eye camps, and have done more then 3.000 Tibetans can see who would otherwise be blind.

India: A New Life

Reported by: Gita Pullaphilly

This video is very impressive and beautiful. I’m amazed. I wish there were so many people like Father Koshy's. He is an amazing person and doing so much for the street children. I feel so sorry for the street children, and I wonder how many of these kids are without parents and imagine their ages.
In India, there are 3 thousands kids on the street. Street kids jump on the train and travel thousands miles away from their homes, and many of them are ended up there. It is so hard to be a girl on the street than a boy. Because a girl could get more risks, such as got raped, or have to do more hard jobs.
The girl named Hasinah, who lost her family and when she was talking about her story that how she got on the street, I felt so sorry. Because, her parents were trying to an uncle involved in dispute. They were told “don’t interface in their disputes, just stay away.” so then someone came in the morning, and poured kerosene all over and set fire to the house, and poured kerosene on her parents, and the parents were taken to the hospital but died there. Now this little girl trying to live and learn at Father Koshy’s.
