Assignment: Social Entrepreneurs: Engaged Citizenry

The questions you want to ask after you have identified a person are:

1. What motivated this person to want to change something in society?
2. How did this person get the community's support for the project?
3. What did the community gain?
4. What did the social entrepreneur gain?

Your essay needs to answer all of these questions; you can structure it like a typical problem/solution essay or cause and effect.

The person has to be alive. Try to find someone local, who is living in the San Francisco Bay Area or in California. The person has to have been doing this work for 10-20 years. You need to locate 5-10 sources on your subject to form a bibliography; you don't have to cite 10 sources. The sources can be published or broadcast interviews, books, articles, and films or you can interview them yourself. The person cannot be a relative. You can work in groups and share data. In fact, I encourage it.

Due dates

The planning sheet and 5-10 sources are due Monday, April 27 to share and post. We will complete our outlines also that day. We meet in A205.

An introduction and conclusion are due Wednesday, April 29 in class (bring in a copy) and post it.

We will spend Monday, May 4, writing in class A205 and giving feedback during the first hour.

The first draft is due Wednesday, May 6 for peer review 1. Peer review 2 is Monday, May 11.

Final draft is due Wednesday, May 13, posted and as a paper copy.

This draft needs to include a peer review and a meeting with me somewhere in the process to review the essay. Ask the tutor or writing center teacher comment on the five areas we consider when reviewing another student's work (Hacker handout) and on any specific questions you might have.

You will post the essay, the planning sheet, and all the works cited and bibliography pages on the blog.

Many students in this class have not participated in class presentations. If you do not make a presentation of your final paper, you lose an entire grade point. Presentations are the day of the final and also due is the portfolio electronically or on a CD.

Introduction

As one ages and the good times roll by, it becomes a lot harder to physically do things on your own. Weather it be because of a handicapped situation or because old age caught up to you. And no one wants to feel dependent on another but sometimes your physical body leaves you no other choice. There comes a time when you find it difficult to get out of bed, wash yourself, or even put together a decent meal. Luckily, there are those few good people that want to help the elderly in any way, shape, or form. Alameda Meals on Wheels is a foundation that helps the days on the elderly go a little less stressful and a lot more relaxing. The director of AMOW is Rosemary Reilly and there are a number of different chairmen that commit to the success of this great duty. Rosemary and Kathy Miranda, director of Alameda Friendly Visitors Program, have changed lives in more ways than one, and gave the people who want to help an easy access to do so.
Conclusion

Volunteer work can be more rewarding than someone could imagine. The feeling of putting a smile on someone's face for doing something as little as delivering their lunch says a thousand words. Alameda Meals on Wheels' great success will live until the end of time. It doesn't take much time to do something that means the world to someone else.

Intro
The Social Entrepreneurs I’m researching is Stephanie Bernstein. She is currently residing in Berkeley, California. Stephanie is the founder of To-Go Ware and Eyes of the Forest, Inc. in 2004. To-Go Ware is a company in Berkeley that makes re-usable food and beverage containers and other products. They make utensil holders made from recycled plastic bags to stainless steel “tiffins.” Plastic are not being recycled properly and they’re going in our landfills and oceans. Stephanie’s vision was to reduce plastic disposable containers and utensils such as plastic forks, spoons, plates, cups, and containers by selling re-usable products. By doing so, we can create an more eco friendly environment.

Conclusion
Our world faces many ecological challenges. Stephanie Bernstein and her company To-Go Ware promotes re-useable products for an eco friendly environment. Many of us purchase to-go meals that requires plastic utensils. Normally, we just throw them in the trash when we’re finished. Many of us do not realize that we’re not recycling these plastic utensils and will end up at landfills. Stephanie’s idea was to reduce using plastic utensils by selling these re-usable products made from recycled materials. These products may even be used in places such as restaurants, cafes, salad bars and other food service locations. By using these products, you can help reduce plastic waste, set an good example for others and help create a better environment.

Intro
As we all know, people spend countless time researching things on the internet and the person I chose has one of the biggest sites on the internet. The social entrepreneur I’m researching is Craig Newmark the creator of the website craigslist.com. Craig Newmark is from New Jersey but he founded the website craigslist in San Francisco, where he now resides. He started craigslist back in 1995 it started as a very small website then it expanded and just blew up.

Conclusion
With the way times are now a website like craigslist really comes in handy. Objects and things you buy off craigslist can save you a lot of money compared to buying it at an actual place. Buying off somebody else they can work a deal out with you so you can get what you want for cheap. Now with craigslist spreaded around the country this is a good source for people to buy things off of. Craig Newmark is a genius for coming up with such a site, he might have gotten rich off the site but he actually made things a lot easier for a lot of people.
