English 201 8-9 AM

Today we read, "The Guardian," an essay about a social worker who valued the lives of the children he was responsible for almost more than he cared for the emotional well-being of his own children and family. The reasons why he devoted himself to these children whose own parents and guardians fell down on the job varied, but to him this was his life and he felt, he said that one man could change the world.

1. Post your paraphrased paragraph here, then read the lyrics from Brenda's Got a Baby, and rewrite the story--imagine the Guardian "Reggie Jones" is Brenda's caseworker. Use dialogue and write a scene where Jones and Brenda's mother or another adult in Brenda's screwed up life is conversing or arguing with him.

Change the ending. Let Brenda live. She doesn't even have to have that baby.

2. Keep working through the exercises in SPHE. We will write essay 3 in class. Bring your book to class so we can review the templates and exercises if there are questions.

3. We will complete chapter 4 this week. I will give you questions to respond to for homework later this week from chapters 1-4. We will read chapters 5-7 next week and complete the book the following week. If you want to read ahead let me know. I want the book back at the end of this unit.

"Dear Mama"

You are appreciated

[Verse One: 2Pac]

When I was young me and my mama had beef
Seventeen years old kicked out on the streets
Though back at the time, I never thought I'd see her face
Ain't a woman alive that could take my mama's place
Suspended from school; and scared to go home, I was a fool
with the big boys, breakin all the rules
I shed tears with my baby sister
Over the years we was poorer than the other little kids
And even though we had different daddy's, the same drama
When things went wrong we'd blame mama
I reminice on the stress I caused, it was hell
Huggin on my mama from a jail cell
And who'd think in elementary?
Heeey! I see the penitentiary, one day
And runnin from the police, that's right
Mama catch me, put a whoopin to my backside
And even as a crack fiend, mama
You always was a black queen, mama
I finally understand
for a woman it ain't easy tryin to raise a man
You always was committed
A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how ya did it
There's no way I can pay you back
But the plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus: Reggie Green & "Sweet Franklin" w/ 2Pac]

Lady...
Don't cha know we love ya? Sweet lady
Dear mama
Place no one above ya, sweet lady
You are appreciated
Don't cha know we love ya?

[second and third chorus, "And dear mama" instead of "Dear mama"]

[Verse Two: 2Pac]

Now ain't nobody tell us it was fair
No love from my daddy cause the coward wasn't there
He passed away and I didn't cry, cause my anger
wouldn't let me feel for a stranger
They say I'm wrong and I'm heartless, but all along
I was lookin for a father he was gone
I hung around with the Thugs, and even though they sold drugs
They showed a young brother love
I moved out and started really hangin
I needed money of my own so I started slangin
I ain't guilty cause, even though I sell rocks
It feels good puttin money in your mailbox
I love payin rent when the rent's due
I hope ya got the diamond necklace that I sent to you
Cause when I was low you was there for me
And never left me alone because you cared for me
And I could see you comin home after work late
You're in the kitchen tryin to fix us a hot plate
Ya just workin with the scraps you was given
And mama made miracles every Thanksgivin
But now the road got rough, you're alone
You're tryin to raise two bad kids on your own
And there's no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus]

[Verse Three: 2Pac]

Pour out some liquor and I reminsce, cause through the drama
I can always depend on my mama
And when it seems that I'm hopeless
You say the words that can get me back in focus
When I was sick as a little kid
To keep me happy there's no limit to the things you did
And all my childhood memories
Are full of all the sweet things you did for me
And even though I act craaazy
I gotta thank the Lord that you made me
There are no words that can express how I feel
You never kept a secret, always stayed real
And I appreciate, how you raised me
And all the extra love that you gave me
I wish I could take the pain away
If you can make it through the night there's a brighter day
Everything will be alright if ya hold on
It's a struggle everyday, gotta roll on
And there's no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus]

Sweet lady
And dear mama

Dear mama
Lady [3X]

Over and over again, people close to me told me to leave. "you cannot save the world," they would tell me. I leave to catch some fish when I just wanted to be alone. I could come home empty handed but being alone and crowded by water is very relaxing. Even when I'm in my relaxing state, I think about my clients and if everything's ok.

Free Paraphrase: Paragraph 2 from “The Guardian”

Tired of rules inside the ring, I went back to my hometown. I wanted to do something good and useful. I decided to be a safe point for low income families with specific troubled teens. As a social worker I saw the horrible reality of how children were living. Even then, the worst started later when I began working for New Jersey’s Division of Youth and Family Services.

paragraph three
I work at D.Y.F.S. as caseworker.I've been there for quite some time now. I heard of one of my kids death and it tore me up inside. At D.Y.F.S. my colleagues get nervous when a child dies. Instead of taking care of the kid they worry more about themselves. We get in trouble for the child's death, and that frustrates me. The Child Welfare League of America makes it clear that we should only work with 17 families, but once i worked with 114 kids. Yet we get in trouble when a kid dies.

5. The D.Y.F.S violence unit takes 24 to 72 hours to respond to a reported abuse case. Then an officer will come out and follow up on the case. Many people are upset with me and want to hurt me. I even have to park my car in a safe location because it has been vandalized before.
Brenda’s got a baby dialog.
Reggie – I want to help your daughter she has so much potential.
Brenda’s mother – She doesn’t need any help from you and you need to stop focusing on my daughter and worry about your life. You need to get your relationship together and think about yourself because I can handle my own daughter.
Reggie – I can help her Please. These kids are all that I know and helping them is all I want to do. I don’t care about anything else.
Brenda’s mother – How can you help my daughter?
Reggie – I can help her believe in herself and make something out of her life. I can put her on the right track. She can learn a lot from what I have to teach her. I have been teaching and helping kids for years and I can see the potential in Brenda. She needs to complete school and be happy women.
Brenda’s mother – OK I’ll let you help her but if I see that you are wasting her time I’m going to ask you to leave us alone.
Reggie – That’s perfectly fine! Can I speak to Brenda?
Brenda’s mother – Yes.
Reggie- Hi Brenda.
Brenda – Hi Mr. Jones.
Reggie - I’m going to be working with you for now on.
Brenda – Ok thank you I need your help.

Free Paraphrase; paragraph 7 from "The Guardian"

I felt deeply sorrow for the sixty month old Jeremy health situation although I had experienced many painful cases at my job. I had been touched by Jeremy who was disabled and hospitalized of being suffered from horrible disease. Jeremy’s two siblings and his mom who had been testified by D.Y.F.S. seldom visited him. I used to see him seven days a week even when I didn’t feel to do so, and gave him gifts that he liked too much. I didn’t care when People in the hospital labeled me his father to bug me. On day, while Jeremy was surrounded by doctors in the emergency room, I couldn’t greet him by Thanksgiving, and when I was back, he had already passed away. I felt terribly sad like he was one of my biological kids.

Dialogue of the new ending for Brenda's Got a Baby

Reggie Jones: Hello young lady. How are you doing?
Brenda: Hi. I’m okay.
Reggie: Well, from now on I will be in charge of your case. Can you tell me what’s been going on at home for the past months? How are your parents treating you and your living condition?
Brenda: Um, I just cook and watch my younger siblings most the time. My parents don’t really do much around the house. My cousin comes over a lot though. He’s nice.
Reggie: So tell me more about him. What are some things you two like doing together?
Brenda: (rubbing her arm and covering her chest constantly) I don’t want to talk about it.
Reggie: Well, how about this. Whenever you feel comfortable enough then you can share it with me. (with a warm smile)
Brenda: Well only if you can keep a secret. (She waits for his nod) We made love. I’m in love with him and want to be with him forever.
Reggie: (Eyes bulging out now) How long has this been going on? Does anyone else know about this?
Brenda: It’s been going on for a bit now. No one knows. (Shaking her head). My cousin said that I can’t tell anyone.
Reggie: I’m going to have to talk to your parents about this situation. Come on, I’ll drive you home.
In Brenda’s house now.
Reggie: Hello Mrs. Brenda’s mom. How are you today?
Brenda’s Mom: I’m doing ok. What do you want? Brenda say something?
Reggie: Are you aware of what your daughter is going through?
Brenda’s Mom: I don’t know. You must know right, you’re her case worker.
Reggie: (Eye brows furious) Your daughter is being molested by her cousin. She doesn’t understand that she is a victim. She thinks she’s in love.
Brenda’s Mom: (Laughing) That little skinny tooth pick girl right there? No one wants to be her lover.
Reggie: (Frustrated) That’s not the matter of the situation right now. We got to get Brenda into a new home where she is safe.
Brenda’s Mom: (Giving R.J. an insulting look) You can’t take my daughter away from me!
Reggie: (Yelling in disgust) How can you let this happen to your daughter? We have to move her. I’m sorry, but this is the only way.

Brenda cries and says her goodbyes.

Brenda is in a new home now with loving and caring parents. She continues her education without any distractions. She never understood why she had to leave until she hears on the news that a teenage prostitute was killed. The prostitute had a young child, but her name sure wasn’t Brenda. She realizes that could have been her. She calls Reggie and thanked him for being a guardian angel.

Some of my childhood buddies from Newark are put into jail for doing drugs and I had a close call myself going down that path, but I have chose a different life teaching myself boxing in the Marines. In the Golden Gloves championship I won and in the Pan American games I won bronze medal as well. During the 1972 Olympics, I should have won the fight against the Soviet Valery Tregubov. Others agreed that I should have won too, but it was not on my hand to declare who wins. I have receive many letters including an invite to Washington by President Nixon.

Paragraph 6

Before Reggie Jones places a mother whom may be on drugs into a program he would like to have a discussion with his companions. Reggie Jones wants to make sure she will be placed into the right program. If the mother chooses otherwise then that leaves Reggie Jones in the position to maneuver the child, this requires mounds of paperwork. If Reggie Jones decides to leave then the child will be worse off because more than likely the "mother won’t send the kid to school or his immnizations." Reggie Jones cares deeply about these children especially when he provides for them, but he isn’t happy with the parents because they are full grown and know better.

Dialogue of the new ending for Brenda's Got a Baby

Reggie Jones: Hello, are you Brenda’s mom?

Brenda’s mom: Yes I am. Who want to know?

Reggie Jones: I’m Reggie Jones. I’m the new social worker that is assign to your daughter’s case. I would like to help you and you’re daughter through the hard times.

Brenda’s Mom: Well I don’t need your help I can take care of my own daughter. Why don’t you go and take care other family who want your help? Leave me and my daughter alone!

Reggie Jones: NO! sorry I can’t do that my job is to help families who are in trouble and need help. I really need to help your daughter Brenda. From what I have read from her case, I know that she needs all the help she can get to raise the baby that she is carrying.

( After listening and having a little disagreement with Reggie Jones, Brenda’s mom agree to let Reggie help Brenda and her.)

Brenda’s Mom: fine you take good care of her.

Reggie Jones: I will surely do. Can I meet her.

Brenda’s Mom: Yes you can. Brenda. Come down here and meet Mr. Jones your new case worker. He will be providing help for you. I want you to come and meet him.

Brenda: Oh hi, nice meeting you.
Reggie Jones: Hello my pleasure. Can we have a sit and talk? Why Don’t you tell me a little more about yourself?

Brenda: okay.

(She sat down and told her story about how she got into the position that she is in now. All the stuff that she said was very hard to hear happing to a young girl and it was very sad. After a long conversation Reggie felt disappointed and upset that he just wanted to take Brenda away from her mother and place her at a better environment).

Reggie Jones: I can’t believe that it could have went this far. I have no choice, but to place you with better people so that you can pull yourself back up and live a healthy and safe life.

Brenda: Okay, I think that it is a good idea that I do get out of this place.

(Brenda looked very sad, but agree that it was better to go stay somewhere else that Reggie will place her at because she know that she will get a better support system and more help. Even though, her mom will disapprove of her decision and be upset at her, but Brenda wants what is best for her and her unborn child).

Brenda’ mom: You are not taking my daughter anywhere. I will not let you take her away from me.

Reggie Jones: I’m sorry, but I have to. End of the story.

(Brenda’s mom had no choice, but to let Brenda go and let her have a better life since she can not provide much for her. Brenda was moved out from her mom's house and placed with another family where she lived happily).

Dialogue to Brenda's Got a Baby

Reggie Jones:(Talking to his wife) Hey Honey! I received a new case today and it touched my heart like never before so I know its gods will for me to help this young lady the best way I can. Her name is Brenda and she’s 12 years old and has a baby boy whom she threw away in the trash, but later returned for the baby. She has family, but they don’t care to help her at all especially Brenda’s mother. This will definitely be a challenge but I can pull it off by the good grace of god.

Reggie’s Wife: I believe in you and I know you can do great wonders for Brenda, I’m rooting for you!

The Guardian Free Paraphrase

Once I felt the need for no more boxing, I decided to go live somewhere else. To give others my services is what I felt the urge to do in life. While I was in college, I got a job as a social worker, never before had I seen the living condition of how those less fortunate live. I didnít know how bad that it could be until I started working for a new firm, thatís when it got bad.

Conversation between Reggie and Brendaís mom

Reggie Jones is a social worker that has just been put on the case of Brenda. He has just gone to go visit Brendaís mom so that he can see what type of condition she is living in and to see what type of help she needs. He is trying to do the best he can to make sure that she is safe and doing the right thing.

Reggie Jones:
Hello, my name is Reggie Jones and I am the new social worker in charge of your daughters case.

Brendaís Mom:
Hi, I am Brendaís mother.

Reggie Jones:
I am just going to cut to the chase. I do not feel that it is appropriate for your daughter to be living in a home that has many men just laying around. It is not safe for her to be living in a place that has all men that are up to no good and have bad intentions. Also, it is not good that your daughter is missing so many days of school and not doing her homework.

Brendaís Mom:
We are living with so many men because its hard to afford a place for her and myself. We are able to stay with these family members. I know that it is not right to be leaving my daughter alone with so many men, but I do not have anyone to watch her after school. Her father does not help me with anything. I am all on my own. I know that she should be going to school and at times I think that she is in school. I have to put more effort into making sure she is going to school.

Reggie Jones:
I know that it might be hard for you to afford a place on your own. It is either I have to take your daughter away from you and put her in a home or we help you get a place. It might not that be that big of a place but it can be your own. So that your daughter wonít be home alone, she can attend after school programs. You would help us out a lot by making sure that she is going to school and doing her work.

Brendaís Mom:
I really would not like to have my daughter taken away from me. It would be great to have a place that we can call our own and where she would be safe. I get home late from work and most programs do not stay open that late. I donít want my daughter to be home alone. It would be great if you could help me find someone to take care of her while she is home.

Reggie Jones:
I can try and see if we can find a person to help you out and they can watch your daughter. The after school program will help make sure that your daughter does her homework. We will figure out a way together to fix all your problems. We will start looking for a place for the two of you. Thank you for letting me come into your home.

Brendaís Mom:
Thank you for all your help. I greatly appreciate it. This is exactly what we needed. I didnít know that I could get this much help from someone or that someone would care so much about the good of my child.

Now Brenda is getting good grades in school and has not missed one day. She is now going to high school and thinking about what she would like to do in the future. The after school programs really helped her out. Her mother and her got a little one bedroom apartment and it has no men living there. She is doing great in life and plans to do a lot more.

Paragraph 3
"The Guardian"
Helping the lives of children has been my primary focus for almost two decades. Sorrow weight me down once the news flashed of Faheems life coming to past. New Jersey's division of youth and family services was chaotic after they lost a youth. Sadly, the importance of a income being at lost becomes more important than a piece of the future. I'd say this behavior came from being at the receiving end of the hit stick in your innocence. Frustration arose within. No more than 17 cases per worker should be the law within the C.W.L.A.. I was giving an enormous responsibility of almost 115 kids. It's unbelievable that someone can have the finger pointed at them for mishaps.

I really like the scenes, they are great. Mai Bee I like your directions "Brenda rubbing her arms and covering her chest". I can see her. Most of you paint the mother really sympathetically... it's great to see your compassion for the her, that she is just as much a victim of her circumstances as her Brenda. I wouldn't have thought her so from the tone of her voice in the song, but that is my interpretation. Reggie certainly sounds like the person we meet in "The Guardian." I also like the introduction of Reggie's wife.

Most of the paraphrases are also good. Some don't make since though. If you don't understand the passage, try the literal paraphrase first and always read your work aloud.

Arley, Amin and Earnest, see me about your paraphrases. Casey, told "who" to leave "what"? Mai,your free paraphrase is not specific enough. We'll work on this in class briefly in the morning.

“The Gaurdian”-Paragraph 9

I got married again, during July. My second wife was beginning to get adjusted to my agenda. I watch the news and if I see a fire in effect during the evening, I leave as quickly as possible to make sure I get to my clients as soon as possible, so I would know that their protected from danger. A social worker, that’s what I am, stay stacked with paperwork on weekdays, as well as on weekends. Food, TV’s, clothing, I’ve bought for my clients during work. Paying off also their gas-electric bill which was $500. My job doesn’t require us to do that, so I don’t tell them. If I did let them know my supervisor would’ve been curious and ask, “Why can’t the parents do that”? Then you would eventually have a lot of paperwork you would have to complete. I guarantee at least 99 percent of D.Y.F.S. employees did similar things- not to show the neglect or abuse but because they care deeply about their clients.
