"Sometimes I Cry" Cyber-Assignment

1. Read the poem: Sometimes I Cry (7). The themes explored here are similar to those explored in "In the Depths of Solitude" (5). How do the circumstances Tupac finds himself in leave him no alternative? Is he a victim? Who is guilty?

2. Dyson explores the "Tupac tragedy" and his heroic response in great detail in Chapter 2. How does he describe Afeni's parenting style? How does Jada describe Tupac? How does she escape? What tools does she possess he lacks?

3. In Son of a Panther Dyson looks at the legacy of the Black Panther Party and how it shaped the Shakur family values. Tupac is both torn and pulled by this organization which is responsible for the life he lives, both good and bad.

4. List 10 values Tupac learned from his mother which were directly connected to her work as an activist/revolutionary.

5. List 10-20 words you don't know the meanings of and their definitions. Talk about Dyson's vocabulary and how he and Tupac share a love of words.

6. Describe and evaluate Afeni's parenting sytle. Incorporate the observations of other persons interviewed in Holler (chapter 2).

7. How was Tupac like James Baldwin? Name 3-4 ways they were alike.

8. I gave you an essay, The Guardian. Think about the character "Brenda" in Brenda's Got a Baby. Think about her in light of Reggie Jones, social worker. Rewrite the end of her story.

Sometimes I Cry

He has no one who he could really turn to, because they are too busy with their own lives to stop for a second or two. This is how Tupac feels, alone and unsure.
Yes, I would say that he is a victim: a victim because of what he had to endure.
His mother, father other family members who were not there to support Tupac and his sister. We could also suggest that at the time the CPS system failed him as well.
2. Afeni is very open and detailed; she never hid anything from her children. She often talked with Tupac about being a young black male and representing his father, who was a panther. She reminded Tupac, about “knowing his situations,” Which meant be careful of your surroundings.
2a.Jada describes Tupac as” very opinionated, very passionate. She also talks about his insecurities.
2b.Tupac was embarrassed sleeping on a bed with sheets, and having only two pair of shoes. He had a temper, which affected his relationship with lots of people. If he felt you were not treating him right, he would punish you.
2c.She escapes by learning to forgive, and move on.
2d.Forgiveness/no-self worth

Sometimes I cry

Tupac felt everyone had a part in this and many other issues of our community. He expressed it in the son “Brenda’s got a Baby.” Her own mother did not care, because she was relying on her daughter Brenda to get money. Therefore, the cycle has continued from one mother to another. It is our responsibility to teach our children, to give love, support, and guidance. If you have never been given guidance, how can you teach and show someone else? It reflects on the community in a way that creates more poverty and broken homes.

Praying and hoping for a better day. Brenda meets up with the social worker who tells her, he can help. Show up at the office fill out the papers without hesitation, and let us work on your new destination. Brenda came to the office, did what she had to do: he even gave her a food voucher too! Now Brenda is feeling very good, looking down at her baby saying, “now we have a chance to leave this hood.” Ten years have passed and Brenda is doing well, she went back to school: got her degree and now works with teens in a youth center. She married the man of her dreams, and they have another baby. Do you think this could have happened? Maybe

1. The poem sometimes i cry is similiar to the depths of solitude because tupas seems to think he his all by himself. In this poem it seems like he has no alternitive because he says " Sometimes when im alone i cry because im on my on... but no one care to ask why why why" So it seems like even tho he is crying and having hard time no one gives it a second thought so he is stuck by his self. I dont think Tupac wanted to make him self seem like a victim but more like everybody that go threw hard times is a victim of such a cruel world.

Afeni had a straightforward parenting style she said she told her kids everything and never lied to them. She also dident bealive in capitalism so that means a lot of money wasent coming in the house.

10 words i dident know
1.Subversion-The state of being subverted; Destruction
2.Aesthetic-Relating to or dealing with aesthetics or the beautiful
3.Malfeasance-Misconduct or wrongdoing especially by a public official
4.disingenuous-not straightforward or candid
5.Candid-Free from prejudice
6.Thespian-of or relating to drama
7.Proletarian-a member of the proletariat;a worker
8.matriarch-a women who rules a family or clan or tribe
9.Arbitrariness-Determined by chance whim or impulse and not by necisety reason or principle

"Sometimes I Cry"

1.Tupac felt abandoned because he never had emotional support. There were always people around for a short period of time, but no consistancy with the people in his life. Therefore, he didn't trust anyone with his most personal thoughts or concerns. He yearned for a special person to confide in about how he really felt. Some one to talk, laugh, cry and care about his well being. A person to stand by his side through thick and thin and not leave him alone. Yes, I think Tupac was a victim. I believe that his father was guilty because he was never their. Afeni was guilty because she never spent time with him. The panthers in his life were guilty because they did'nt pick-up where his mother slacked, and the community around him that saw the situation he was in and did nothing to help.
2.Dyson describes Afeni's parenting style as milatant yet absent. She was very contradicting by being so active and involved as a revolutionary. But absent as a mother with children who needed and depended on her for support. Jada describes Tupac as a lonely emotional and very poor teenager. I don't think Jada escaped, I think her lifestyle was not as severe as Tupac's. Her mother was not there because of the drugs. Tupac's mother was not there because of the black panther movement and then the drugs. So maybe Jada had some stabilty in her earlier years. She found someone to confide in and not leave her side.Tupac was still in search of that special someone.
3.Tupac was torn and pulled between the good and bad. I think this is where he believes that he formed two personalities within the man. The life experiences of his community shapes who you become as a person.
4.The ten values that Tupac learned would be commitment, integrity, perserverance, strong thinking skills, respect, love for your passion, leadership skills, politics, self-control and faithfulness.
5.Dyson uses very unusual words that you don't normally hear or use in everyday conversation. I like that because it is helping me to extend my vocabulary. epilhets-characterize a person/thing
anamored-to have inspired
pundots-a learned person, authority
esoteric-intended for/understood by only a few.
boudoir- women's private room.
machismo-a strong/exaggrated sense of masculinity.
misogyny-hatred for women
socrates-greek philospher
erudition-deep intensive learning
paeans-a song of joyful praise/exultation
martyrdom-one who endures great suffering.
epoch-one that is note worthy.
6.Afeni's parenting styles were strict, milatant and absent. The other people of Tupac's community were also absent. They were so involved in black justice they forgot about the nuturing of the children. So many fathers in that organization that no one stayed out of trouble long enough to add stability to Tupac's life. He found himself teaching and learning through life experience of what a real man should be in the eyes of a legend.
7.Tupac and James Balwin were excellent writers.
-They both had a passion for writing about the thruths as they saw it.
-They both felt like loner's no one to talk to about their deep inner thoughts.
8.Now Brenda is getting some help. She has a place to stay and some food. She started back to school and is doing well. The support system is starting to work. Parenting classes is just what she needed to break the cycle of abuse and proverty. Hope for her and the baby are finally here. I thank God for sending his angel. He is my shining star; the beam of light; the hopes and dreams that some never find. Thankyou for helping me reverse the curse. A little love makes all the difference in a sucessful life.

“Sometimes I cry”

1. 2pac felt that he was a young man, in a grown man’s body, because of all the things he had to deal with in life, and all the wisdom he had, despite his age. He had to overcome many things in his life which is the reason why he says that he cries and that he’s torn in the heart and it’s difficult to carry on in his life. He is a victim for having some negative thoughts about his heart being torn, and how many people didn’t understand him. But the people that are against him are guilty because he felt only God should judge him and not people, which they tried to do.
2. She had good parenting skills. Teaching him how to maintain his own as an independent black male in society back then as a black panther, such as his father. And also taught him that he can’t trust certain people, meaning to watch his surroundings.
3.
4. Be truthful
Confidence
Watchful
Arrogance
Brave
Smart
Strong
Father
Religious
Good-Heart

1.
The circumstances Tupac found himself in left him no alternative but do think
differently than most and grow up with a very lonely soul. No one really understood him. He had this mom constantly talking to him with her militant teachings. Then he had the streets talking to him, coaching him into careless behavior. He was coming from two different ends trying to meet, which is what I believe lead to this dual personality he possessed. The only person he felt understood him was Afeni, but after her addiction took flight and the actions that came along with the drug abuse, insecurities and bitterness set in for Tupac. He was left alone to try and find a place for him in this world.

Yes Tupac was a victim. He was born into a so-called structured unit. He grew up feeling that The Panthers were his family and family took care of family. So he was taught. But when things got rough, in Tupac eyes The Panthers left, leaving his mom alone to fend for herself and her children. But I think even after that knowing that he still had his mom that was enough for him, until things got too rough for her, at which time she began to self medicate, abandon her children and live life carelessly. Tupac, who once had all these caring people around him, felt they all just disappeared on him. He was left alone to come to his own conclusions and decisions about life. He was a victim and society, politics, The Panthers and Afeni are all guilty parties.

2. Dyson describes Afeni’s parenting style as complexed. First she’s this black revolutionary who stands up for herself and others who taught her children to do the same. She did not believe in material things. She believed in having just the necessities of life. She would give toys away if her children had one too many.

Jada Describes Tupac as being a lot like herself, very opinionated and very passionate. She feels that because of Tupacs’ relationship with this mother, he didn’t have a very good opinion of himself. She also describes Tupac as an unforgiving person. A person who felt the need to punish anyone he felt did not do right by him.

Jada escapes by realizing that people would embrace her indifferences due to her mothers’ addiction. She realized that she was worthy of love and smart regardless of her past. She could not get Tupac to believe in himself that way.

4. (1) He saw injust in the way blacks and the poor were being treated and felt the need to stand up and voice his opinions about it.
(2) He enjoyed speaking in front of audiences for causes that were dear to him.
(3) They both believed that they could obtain a more profitable education through analyzing society than through a normal education.
(4) The were both inclined to protest injustice with grand gestures.
(5) The both believed in respect for themselves and others.
(6)They both believed in being honest and not lying to others or themselves.

Dyson and Tupac both love to him themselves speak. The both have a great knowledge of words and like to extremely and verbally describe people and or situations.

6. Afenis’ parenting style could be described as radical and then again as a normal ordinary caring mom. She was mostly concerned with Tupac and his sister growing up with good strong minds and ready for society. She was a parent that chose to be extremely honest with her children, informing them of the goings on with her and the Panthers. Knowing the life she lead and involvement with the movement, Afeni recognized the importance in raising a strong black male child and keeping him protected as much as she could and full of knowledge. Cassandra Butcher notes that “she entered Tupacs’ home and encountered a warm and loving atmosphere”. She did notice the Panther clippings and other stuff around the home, but also saw a family who loved being with each other.

7. (1). They both enjoyed reading and writing at an early age.
(2). They both wrote from the passions of growing up black in society.
(3). Due to their writings they both won awards and invites to attend college.

8. Brenda retrieves her baby from the garbage and due to the fact that she had no support from her family, she moves into a shelter. While in the shelter, Brenda meets someone that took an interest in her and her situation and decided to help her. This person introduced Brenda to public assistance in which she obtained a place to live and daycare facilities for her child. While her child was in daycare, Brenda continued her education, graduating and obtained permanent employment, which enabled her to take care of herself and her child. At night Brenda would think about her accomplishments and her motivation to stay steadfast. She would also entertain the thought of attending college to obtain a degree or degrees.

Sometimes I Cry; In the Depths of Solitude by Tupac Shakur

1. Tupacs situation seems to leave him not alternative because that is how the world is. This world has become unsafe. No one cares for anyone else. Only family is one thing that is most likely to sustain. In his situation, he has no alternative because Afeni neglected him when he was growing up and didn’t really have a father there. I don’t think he is the only victim. I think everyone can be a victim. The world has changed and so has people. It’s hard to find good people. Everyone should be guilty. It is we, who has caused changes in patterns and routine of being friendly and courteous.

2. Dyson describes Tupacs relationship with Afeni like a roller coaster. They went through stages of controlling, authority, and caring and understanding. Afeni has always been honest to Tupac. Afeni neglected Tupac and later tried to make up and prove to Tupac that she isn’t a bad mother. Jada and Tupac share some similarities and were dealing with some similar situations. She says that he was really poor and embarrassed of inviting her into his house. She also says that his relationship with his mother affected him greatly and he felt like he didn’t deserve any of the adoration from fans. Tupac lacks self esteem and seeing his worth. Jada understands that she is worth deserving great things in life.

3. Police punished Tupac more because he had parents that were in The Black Panther. Tupac wanted to reform The Black Panther, but without doing bad or destroying things.

4. Ten things Tupac learned from his mother being a activist are: To better yourself, to become educated, to rebel, to make sacrifices, to analyze society and fight back, to protest injustice, to think before doing anything, to address racial issues, respect oneself and others, and to have pride.

5. Imbibed: absorb into the mind. Malfeasance: wrong doing in public office. Disingenuous: not candid. Gargantuan: huge. Blasé: bored. Proletarian: the working class. Insurgence: rising up in revolt; rebel. Thespian: actor. Arbitrariness: acting unpredictably and more from whim or caprice than from reason or judgment. Impeccable: flawless.

6. Afeni’s parenting style is neglecting her children, but in a way that forces Tupac to grow up quicker and learn for himself. I think the good outcome of this is that Tupac grew up to be a good son. He was also stronger and really independent.

7. Tupac and James Baldwin are similar in these ways: they both like to write about the negro problems; they both are independent; they both like to read.

8. Brenda tells Reggie, her social worker about her secret love life with her cousin. He can’t stand this ugly situation. Outrageous, he marches to the house, yelling out asking Brenda’s mom, “Why are you letting this happen to your daughter?” Mama doesn’t seem to care or want to change the situation. Reggie cares too much to turn his back on this. He’s trying and trying. Soon he gets her into a new home away from all the careless people in this world. He’s keeping her in a better home. Brenda cries and doesn’t understand until she hears on the news that a prostitute was found dead....a prostitute who had a baby, but her name wasn’t Brenda.

Dialogue for the new ending of Brenda's Got a Baby

Reggie Jones: Hello young lady. How are you doing?
Brenda: Hi. I’m okay.
Reggie: Well, from now on I will be in charge of your case. Can you tell me what’s been going on at home for the past months? How are your parents treating you and your living condition?
Brenda: Um, I just cook and watch my younger siblings most the time. My parents don’t really do much around the house. My cousin comes over a lot though. He’s nice.
Reggie: So tell me more about him. What are some things you two like doing together?
Brenda: (rubbing her arm and covering her chest constantly) I don’t want to talk about it.
Reggie: Well, how about this. Whenever you feel comfortable enough then you can share it with me. (with a warm smile)
Brenda: Well only if you can keep a secret. (She waits for his nod) We made love. I’m in love with him and want to be with him forever.
Reggie: (Eyes bulging out now) How long has this been going on? Does anyone else know about this?
Brenda: It’s been going on for a bit now. No one knows. (Shaking her head). My cousin said that I can’t tell anyone.
Reggie: I’m going to have to talk to your parents about this situation. Come on, I’ll drive you home.
In Brenda’s house now.
Reggie: Hello Mrs. Brenda’s mom. How are you today?
Brenda’s Mom: I’m doing ok. What do you want? Brenda say something?
Reggie: Are you aware of what your daughter is going through?
Brenda’s Mom: I don’t know. You must know right, you’re her case worker.
Reggie: (Eye brows furious) Your daughter is being molested by her cousin. She doesn’t understand that she is a victim. She thinks she’s in love.
Brenda’s Mom: (Laughing) That little skinny tooth pick girl right there? No one wants to be her lover.
Reggie: (Frustrated) That’s not the matter of the situation right now. We got to get Brenda into a new home where she is safe.
Brenda’s Mom: (Giving R.J. an insulting look) You can’t take my daughter away from me!
Reggie: (Yelling in disgust) How can you let this happen to your daughter? We have to move her. I’m sorry, but this is the only way.

Brenda cries and says her goodbyes.

Brenda is in a new home now with loving and caring parents. She continues her education without any distractions. She never understood why she had to leave until she hears on the news that a teenage prostitute was killed. The prostitute had a young child, but her name sure wasn’t Brenda. She realizes that could have been her. She calls Reggie and thanked him for being a guardian angel.

In Dyson's vocabulary he uses alot of big words that I don't understand. But I think he should do that because he is writing a book and you have to use big words.

Tupac and Dyson share the same things, Because they both use big words when they are writing.

6) I think Afeni's parenting style was good.Because she taught tupac about alot of things, such as Political, critical thiking and analyzing society.

7)1) They liked to express their ideas to everybody
2) They liked to write
3) They are also independent

8) I stayed married to my wife and she still dosen't get why I like my job. But somehow I ended doing all the wrong things. So I retired from my job and now were going to move to Palms Springs. As they get ready to pack Brenda tells me where having a baby. I ask "is this our baby"
"of course it is" "I think your not telling me the truth" "Well I have been with you all along"
"why do I get the feeling that your not telling me the truth"
"I only been with you"
"Sorry you can't go with me"
"what?"
"I am going to Palm Springs by myself and you can't go"

Branda crys and she runs off by herself..

The next day Branda finds him gone from the house she is alone. Nobody is going to help her now. She thinking about her mom or grandma who might her but she is wrong. She hasn't spoken to them in 3 years. So now she has no where go to and she is only mad at herself to what she did. She is in a dark and lonley place.

1. Tupac had no one to rely on which may have played a part in him not feeling accepted by his peers. In some ways he is the victim he was often put in second place by his mother because of her efforts with the black panther movement on the other hand he was not the victim because he had people around him who loved him and supported him. I think the support and love just did not come from the source he wanted it to come from. No one is really guilty, sometimes life throws you a curve ball and he just had a few thrown his way.

2. Afeni’s parenting style was very open and straight with her children. She let them in on what was going on in her life and did her best to support them in her own way by trying to provide what was necessary. She wanted Tupac to be a strong black male and often taught him the importance of becoming such.

Jada described Tupac as being emotional yet passionate with many opinions. The two had similar issues with the absence of their mothers growing up. Jada overcame her situation by learning to forgive and realizing her self worth, Tupac never fully came to the same conclusion.

3. Tupac was pulled between two worlds; the one that surrounded him and the world he wanted to see without violence and poverty etc. He was often bothered to see the misfortune that surrounded him but remained positive in the fact that he could make a difference and change things for the better.

4. 10 Values Tupac learned from his mother

1. To stand for what he believed in
2. To make a difference
3. Be a strong black male
4. Leadership
5. To be Passionate
6. To use his mind
7. To have morals
8. An interest in politics
9. How to overcome obstacles
10. To have confidence

5. 10 words and Definitions

1. Excruciatingly- intolerably embarrassing, tedious, or irritating
2. Subversion- an action, plan, or activity intended to undermine or overthrow a government or other institution
3. Emblematic- relating to, consisting of, or acting as an emblem
4. Knell- something that signals death, disaster, or the end of something
5. Malfeasance- conduct by a public official that cannot be legally justified or that conflicts with the law.

9. Unapologetically- untroubled or unaffected by shame, especially in situations where others would be ashamed
10. Siege- a prolonged effort to gain or overcome something

6. Afeni put her children second to the movement but still did what she could for them when time allowed. She taught them a lot about what she felt they needed to know growing up. She was not into material things so her children often went without.

7. How was Tupac like James Baldwin? Name 3-4 ways they were alike.
1. Both had a love of reading and writing
2. Both cared for themselves from a young age
