Bastards of the Party

Tupac speaks about the New Black Panther Party, this film, Bastards of the Party looks at the legacy or remains of the BPP, the youth --in this instance, in Los Angeles who knew something great or revolutionary happened, yet lack the guidance or leadership to know how to continue the principles of revolution. The director of the film is curious about the culture of violence in his community, the black community. What social situations gave rise to the two most notorious gangs, the Crips and the Bloods. Clps & Story: http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/bastardsoftheparty/index.html

Raised in the Athens Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Cle "Bone" Sloan was four years old when his father died, and 12 when he became a member of the Bloods. Now an inactive member of the notorious gang, Sloan looks back at the history of black gangs in his city and makes a powerful call for change in modern gang culture with his insightful documentary, BASTARDS OF THE PARTY.

In the afternoon class we looked at themes from the film and developed thesis sentences based on Topical Invention strategies (handout). The homework was to choose two themes and develop 6-8 sentences: 2 analogies, 2 definitions, 2 consequences, and 2 testimonies.

If you were absent you can borrow the film from the library or film rental store. We watched up to 1980. The film is produced by HBO. Here is a link.

Other homework is to continue in SPHE: Parallel Structure, which we also reviewed briefly. For the afternoon class, students were asked to find a poem in Rose which uses parallel structure.

Bastards of thr Party

What makes a young man that is not proverty stricken and has a decent lifestyle join a gang that leads to a life of crime? A gang is a group of criminals or hoodlums. In the case of Cle "bone" Sloan; would the absence of a father, who was killed when he was four years old, or a mother losing herself mentally due to the grievance of her husbands death play a part.
Maybe Cle was looking to feel a void of love and support, in which he found in the brotherhood of the Bloods his gang. This resulted in a life of crime, where he served time in prison. Ironically, while in prison he began questioning the history of his gang and wanted knowledge of its beginnings. After learning informative information, Cle has decided to educate his peers from within their brotherhood.

Corruption:

The corruption of a legal system that is suppose to protect citizens of the United States, from violence were responsible for crimes and illegal activities in Los Angeles, Ca. the LAPD. Corruption is dishonesty, immorality and openess to bribery of illegal acts. In the 1940s white southern raciest military men were recruited to the North to be policemen. This was the beginning of an epedimic of police brutality, set-ups and extortion. Unfortunately, these acts are still in existance today. The cover-ups and disclosures by our police department's nationwide are more discret in the twenieth century.

“Invention”
“Cle Bone Sloan” documentary Bastard of the Party shows how gangs have been a part of the American culture for sixty-nine years or more. Cle became a gang member at the tender age of twelve, entering the fourth generation of gang bangers. In his thirties, in Los Angeles he worked within the gang to find answers to what made African Americans kill one another. He explains how unity and leadership was broken down in the community, and the police become a profiteering gang in it which untimely lead to more killings and police abuse.
Genocide - -----Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in completely or in part;
Cle talks of how the language changed with gang members, there was once a caring aspect to it. Then it went from “my brother” “it’s about me” and the end “kill that nigga” (this is another form of genocide.
Analogy --------a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based: the analogy between the heart and a pump. The police and the gangs “bloods” and “Crips” are dangerous they both kill.

Consequences --------an act or instance of following something as an effect, result, or outcome.
During the height of the gangs’ education went from ninth in percentile to thirty-third. Youths were more interested in becoming part of a gang family that was there schooling.
Testimony In the law, testimony is a form of evidence that is obtained from a witness who makes a solemn statement or declaration of fact.
The police made big profits off the gangs, and planted drugs in their neighborhoods. Instead of protecting its citizens, police often targeted them especially the youth. These corruptions have continued and police abuse is on the rise again.

Bastards of the Party:

Cle was saying in the movie Bastards of the Party. He states that being in a Gangs are not a good. Because you will be either be killed or end up in prison for life. Some of the guys in there were a former gang and not in there anymore because they either made up there mind not to be in a gang anymore because they didn't want to end up to be killed or in prison for life.

Cle was also saying that if your in a gang then if somebody goes and killed somebody then the person from another gang would en up killing a person from a another gang. Because they want to feel like they have power over them.

Corruption: The decomposition of recently living matter.

younger kids wanted to be in a gang. They didn't want to be in school. They didn't care if they were in school they just want to be a gang and be bloods or crips.

Bastards of The Party

What is violence and death? According to Webster's Dictionary, the word "violence" means the cause injury done which is entitled to respect, reverence, or observance; profanation; infringement; unjust force; outrage; assault. And the word, "death" means the cause of loss of life. Violence is to death as sex is to pregnancy. The act of violence strikes out from anger and frustration. Violence lead to death. Gangs fighting and shooting each other will cause more violence and death. Sloan says that there were so much hatred between the two gangs that members were being killed twice. Crip's gang members would pour chicken blood over the deceased person at a Blood's gang member funeral. This act was to terrorize and aggravate the situation. Crips having done this caused Blood gang members to go shoot Cribs at their funeral. Bottom line, Sloan wants audiences to know that gang, violence, and death is not the way to go.

Topical Invention

“Poverty”

Definition: poverty is when someone is living in poor condition having no money or any support systems where they do whatever to survive.

Analogy: Poverty is like living in an environment that is so bad or dangerous that people would kill or attack anyone to get whatever they need. Like in the film some children become a member of a gang group so that they can feel like they are in a supported place and feel like they are in a family.

Consequence: poverty occurs when families or an individual person can not fend for their selves and they do not have money to support them and their family. Everything is really dirty and horrible to be around. Basically their surrounding is unfit to be living in.

Testimony: in the film the authority said, “ Poverty is due to people making the wrong decision or choices in live with no job.”

“Violence”

Definition: Violence is when people like the gangs in central Los Angeles where they shoot, rob, kill, and attack other individuals for getting in their way or setting a foot on a different gang’s turf.

Analogy: Violence is like living in constant fear that something bad will happen. Such as being beat up, killed, and harass by police officer or other gangs.

Consequence: violence are cause by people being mistreated or misunderstood by others so they uses a violence approach to resolve a problem. In the film violence is cause by different gangs claiming streets which lead to people getting murder, hurt, or killed.
