What's in a Name? Cyber-Assignment for both classes

Think about your given name: its history and meaning. How does this linguistic presentation suit your personality?

This is a two-part assignment. Read the Felicia Pride reflection, (taken from The Message: 100 Life Lessons from Hip Hop's Greatest Songs;" now review your earlier post and extend and expand it given her comments and the lyrics from the song: "the Meaning of the Name" by Gangstar (1991).

The Meaning of a Name

The meaning of the name GangStarr, well I'll tell ya
It means I find my mind can excel to
a greater type of thought, brought by the things that I've been taught
in relation to things that I rebel to divine and combine
with a sense of confidence
Accomplishments, are achieved off lots of gifts
But slopiness, I could never tolerate it
Not the Guru nor Premier you don't know how long we've waited
While other groups have faded, just like haircuts
We use sheer guts to open the earducts of your brain
to expose every vain
Cause you sound plain, insane, and mundane, it's a shame
You've got no beats, so you get no seats
at this table, you ain't stable with the mic cable
Kane and Able, jealous brothers
And I knew some girls who were overzealous lovers
But back to the act of developing the GangStarr track
It means that nothing can be wack
The music is picked right, the mic is gripped tight
The lyrics I kick right to a beat like Kryptonite power
Not withstood by any mortal or immortal
To make you get on the floor til
another dope jam we slam with precision
Bringing beams of light, like the colors in a prism
or reflections, through a spectrum
And all the soft silly suckers I'ma wet them
in other words destroy boy, and then claim my fame...
This is the meaning of the name

(DJ Premier cuts "what does it all mean?")

[Guru]
GangStarr, it means a lot to me
It means I'm free to bust rhymes sporadically
Gang represents my boys or a posse
So just back up off me
And the Starr symbolizes the power
Making the suckers and weak brothers cower
We got strong, intelligent minds with a street sense
Crazy offense, and stupid defense
Now, have I made myself clear?
Or do I have to call on DJ Premier?
For he and I make up the songs that you long for
Meanwhile ducks just knock on the wrong door
Waiting for a call or for the doors to open
Cause they're hoping, that they'll get chosen
But to be chosen is a divine gift
You better get a job quick
See you can't rhyme and all your beats are weak
You oughta take a peak and check out the technique
Seek, and you shall find
GangStarr stands for mastermind
Simple and plain and yo this ain't no game lame...
This is the meaning of the name

What is in a name?

My first name is Kathleen, which is an English Scottish, Welsh, and Irish name. This means pure and unsullied. For those of you who do not know the meaning of pure I will give it to you. Pure adj. not missed with anything else: free from sin. Another word used to describe my name is unsullied, now I must admit I did not know what it meant. I had some kind of inclination to what it meant, but I too was wrong.
Unsullied -adj. spotless, clean, fresh; free from dirt and impurities, yeah I know huh? I am named after my mothers mother, her name was Katherine that means the same. My name does pretty much live up to its name. I am pure and try not to get dirty on a daily basis.

Kathleen,
When I read what your name means I thought about the symbolic meaning of the terms
"pure," "clean," "fresh," and "spotless" as words referencing your character too, not just the physical absence of dirt. Dirt is a metaphor...if we are speaking of the brown, red, or black substance that encourages life to grow. It's not dirty, but if we are speaking of the substances that soil our clothes and taint our environments then I guess we could call it dirt...a catch-all term which is certainly up for interpretation like your name: Katherine: pure and unsullied. Where did you find the meaning? Next time indicate the source.

The Meaning of the Name
The songs are very positive and motivating. It stimulates and articulates in a mind thinking way. We all have dreams that we would like to achieve some day. It is just knowing what path you must take. It also seems as though they do not want jealousy or hatred to be come part of the group. However, they compare and refuse to let anyone steal there fame.
Both songs seem to stress the importance of bringing what you have to the mic, or just step down. In different ways of putting it, there are both saying the same thing the word are just paraphrased. One is done with a better choice of words, and positive. Creatively they both make there point about how good they are. They both convey the same message with some twists and turns.
With that in mind, the reading about The Meaning of the Name it shows that you can create who you want to be. Being in the entertainment world, you have maybe good four or five sides to you. It is the inner voice and the decisive moment that sparks someone else whether you are rapper, singer, or dancer, you have to get into character.

In Felicia Pride’s reflection, “The Meaning of the Name,” she “introduces her alterego “Negra” as a vehicle she says she speaks through when “Felicia” is too shy (6-8).

She says,

“Hip-hoppers have always assumed unusual aliases. A survey of the members of the Wu-Tang Clan-from Ol’ Dirty Bastard to Ghostface Killah-offers more than enough wild examples. And many of us have taken renaming to another level by also adopting additional personas” (7).

Pride’s point is that one still have to be oneself. Negra doesn’t mean she is bipolar. What it means is that one should “embracing our multiple selves (the Me, the Myself, and the I) . . .” (8).

What My Name Means

My full name is, Mai Bee Lor. “Mai” is a term of endearment saying “my dear” or “my precious.” It also means that a person must be very gentle and loving to receive this name. “Bee” means white shiny coins. In my culture, we wear bee as part of our Hmong outfit to dazzle. My mother picked my name out. My mother said that when I was born, I was so white, beautiful, and small so she named me after bee. I’ve always used my middle name during primary school, jr. high, and high school. The only time I went by my first name was in church. It wasn’t until college that I went by my full name. Sometimes I feel like a different person when using my first name. I am more generous and thoughtful. When I use my middle name, I feel somewhat like a bad girl that likes to play along the line of trouble.

What My Name Mean

My name is Cynthia Phan. The origin of Cynthia came from the Greek, but it is a form of Spanish name for “Cindy”. The meaning of Cynthia is The Moon Personified or the goddess of the moon referring to the birthplace of Mount Kynthos. My parents gave me this name because they did not know what other names to name me, so my mother had my father and uncle look for a name from the name book and they both decided to choose Cynthia out of the whole list of other name. This name Cynthia was not by on from an older generation in my family so it does not run in the family and I think that is suits me and my personality.

What's in a Name:

My name is Rhonda, it comes from the Greek lanuage. The meaning is rose or woman of the rhodes. My middle name is Kaye, it is also of the greek lanuage. The meaning is pure. I never thought about what my name meant until yesterday, and did'nt really care. Until listening to Tupac's interview and began to think of how my name would define me. When I think of a pure rose , I think of beauty from within. I am every part of my name. Because I feel beautiful from the most deepest part of my soul. I believe my spirituality has alot to contribute.
The funny thing is when I had my children I researched the meanings. That was important for me to give them a characteristic they could live up to and feel proud. I guess unconciously to me the meaning for a male would help them. My oldest son is Rashard which is french and means strong power or hardy power, and he is very stonged will. My youngest is Rajan in Arabic means anticipation or in Sanskrit which is the radiant king. He was well waited for and the apple of his parents eyes, maybe because we knew he was the last.

The Meaning of a Name

Gang Star embraces her name to a positive side. She allows the meaning to personify her personality. "Negra" in spanish meant black woman, that is who she identifies with. The name could also mean "unforunate" or "angry", but gang star choose not to let that defination be a part of her.
She uses negra to do the things that gang star would not normally do. This allows her to embrace her fears and not run away from them. Many people use this psychologyical theory of one person with two personalities. It helps them to do the unthinkable.
The moral of the story is to find a comfort in your name. If you don't like it, change it to something you will like. But, whatever it is let if define you to the fullest. Allow your name to be a supernatural experience that will let you step out of the box.

When I read "What's in a name?" I thought that it would be about just a name that somene was given. I did not think that it would be about a name that is given as a group. I thought it would be the real meaning of a name, not someones opinion. It was good to hear about what someone thinks about the name. This song I think motivates other people to research what there name means.

My name is Arely. Arely was choosen by my tia that lives in Mexico. My father had a song that was written for me. Arely is a Mexican name. It means brave, courageous, heroic. It is a rare name. I am not that brave at times because I am a very shy person. I do like to try new things. If I am afraid of things I always try and face my fears. Each time that I accomplish to face a fear,I make myself do the ones that I havent done. I beome more brave when I am mad. At times I do things that my other cousins would not do. I am the type of person that likes to help other and am always there for people to give them advice. I find joy in helping people with anything that I can. So in a way I do feel that I live up to my name.

What is in a name?

My first and middle name is Gilbert Louis. My mother came up with the name. I never asked her where or how she got the name, all I know is my grandmother from my father wanted to name me Joshua because all her sons and daughters have a name that starts with the letter J. I rarely use my middle name because it really makes my whole name long (Gilbert Louis S[arsoza] Canlas). And most of my friend use my first name. I go by Gilbs, Bert, and back in the Philippines my relatives call me Bibet, and I do not know where that came from, All I could think of is that is the way children pronounce my first name.
