summary for chapter 1

In this chapter “Dear Mama” it was about how Tupac have a lot of love and hate for his mother Afeni at time due to her being absent in his life. It talks about how he and his family struggle a lot growing up because his mother was a Black Panther who was always arrested and put in jail, but get release from jail and rearrested again. Afeni was never really there was Tupac and his sister making Tupac’s and his sister’s life like a roller coaster. There was the ups and downs problem that he and his family have to go through. Afeni was using crack cocaine which made it hard for her to raise her children and have a stable home for them.

Tupac turns to the streets for guidance and support because he did not have anyone to support him. His mother was never going back and forth from jail and his father abandoned them when he was a baby. Tupac never got to really meet or get to know his father. Afeni moved her family to New York and got public assistance and from there she tried to get her life straight and support her children, but I don’t think that she has. After living in New York for a while they moved to Marin County and that’s where they started a new life, but still has many hardships.

Summary for Chapter 2, “The Son of a Panther”

In “The Son of a Panther,” the author mention that Tupac receive his revolutionary roots from his mother. The reason was that his mother started to become more involve within her community. It was a good step that Afeni was getting involved because her son was starting to see a better life ahead for him and family. He follows her footsteps, but he takes her mistake and learns from it so that he doesn’t repeat it. He attend his first ever political speech when was barely walking yet. Tupac say,

“My mother was a Black Panther, and she was really involved in the movement,” At first I rebelled against her because she was in a movement and we never spent time together because she was always speaking and going to colleges and everything”(50).

Tupac felt that way toward his mother because while he was growing up his mother was always in and out of his life. So when he sees that there is a chance for the two of them to reunited and be a family again he doesn’t want her to be involved with the movement. After a while Tupac realize that it was okay and didn’t really mind and they both bonded as mother and son and son and mother.

Tupac and his family were still poor and still have many suffering but he was grateful of having a life and his mother’s scarifies. Afeni could have chosen to go down a different path in life such as going to college and getting a degree, but she chose a challenging path where she had tough time, but was still able to teach her child to be ready for the society at the end of all the times.

Chapter 1 "Dear Mama"

In this Chapter I was reading about when Tupac mother was born and what she did. Tupac mother was involved in the black panthers, and what she did in the black panthers. Afeni was pregnant with Tupac in jail. She didn't get alot of good food in there. Tupac mother also had a drug problem.

When Tupac was fifteen he appeared in Raisin in the sun at the Apolllo Theater in 1984. Then they moved to a city called Marin County in California. They were poor and tupac also had conflicts with his mother.

When Tupac would come home at 2:30 in the morning he would somtimes agrue with his mother. Sometimes they would argue about her drug problem, but they rarely talk about her drug problem. Tupac had a really hard time with it and would put alot of weight on his shoulders.

Chapter 1

Dear Mama expresses deep and unconditional love on behalf of Tupac and his mother. He cared deeply for his mother and referenced to her as a “Black Queen.” Tupac and his mother were most definate4lty from the same tree; both were very headstrong and street savvy. Afeni stayed true to her son no matter what, and never hid anything from him. This made it even harder for Tupac to desert his mother.
They moved so many times, that Tupac was not able to get a formal education. He managed to check himself into a couple of schools, which helped him begin his new journey. They where always moving, due to Afeni, and her use of drugs. She was addicted to crack cocaine. She also indulged in alcohol use. She was in and out of jails, on the road a lot speaking on college campuses and being part of the Panther movement.
Tupac‘s will to become something great, was always in him. Through all of his daily struggles, hunger and mischief, he wanted more. He set off to get it, retain it and to share it. His love of wanting to know help him curve that bad boy urge. He taught himself more than he could have ever learned in school. The undying love for his mother and the name that was given to him to become something great has embraced the world.

Chapter 2
Tupac is born into a world that will define him as best awaited gift of Afeni's life. Due to several mis-carriages prior to Tupac Afeni knew she was having something of greatness, she felt it in her soul. He was the one, the survivor of all of her turmoil. With all the negative energy about her and her unborn child, Afeni never cared for it. What she felt was jubilant.

Afeni was involved in the many movements of the Black Panthers; often she would not be at home for her children. This caused a bit of a problem for Tupac, which made him the provider for himself and his sister. At times Tupac, with temper quite like his mother Afeni would not cooperate with her, like many teenage children that are sometimes defiant with their parents. That never lasted too long, because of the special bound that they shared.

Tupac and Afeni were so much alike, it is no wonder that they bumped heads often. In the end the love they had for each other would not fail under any circumstances.
Afeni, despite all of her abandonments, drug use and social activist activities she taught him how to be all that he can be. Striving do something great for himself and everyone around him, she taught him that the struggle is about standing for something. Tupac proved that he stood for many things, whether you or I liked it.

Summaries

Dear Mama
This chapter talks about how his mother was part of the Black Panther Movement. She wasn’t really able to spend time with her children because of always having to run. At times he family had no where to sleep and nothing to eat. Each time that they moved Tupac felt as if he didn’t fit in. Her sister had to take care of her children because she was put in jail.
Afeni was born in New York. Afeni was always truthful with her children. She told them what she used to do and would encourage them not to do the same. Many of Tupacs friends liked to go visit him. She was ok with what her children did. She taught her children how the outside world really is. After a certain amount of time her and Tupac got along well. Afeni felt that only if she told her children things then they would be able to fix their problems.
Tupac took classes in an art school as his mother did when she was younger. He was a good actor. He was also a good writer that would put together his own plays. He was the type of person that would pure his soul into his lyrics.

The Son of a Pather
This chapter is about how Tupac was also encouraged by what he learned from the Black Panthers. He thought of making his own Black Panthers that would be less violent. He was the type of person that did things with intensity. Tupac wanted people to hear about how blacks were treated and that is what he talked about in his lyrics. Tupac feels that being poor helped his learn a lot and that he was rich in his own way.
It was hard for the children of ex-Black Panthers. People would ask them many questions about their parents. They would be watched to see if they would be the same as there parents. Even Tupacs godfather was a Black Panther.
Tupacs had no limits on how he could be and live. His ideas were wrapped in a dark body. People didn’t know how wise he was, although he died at a young age. He was a talented person. He was fascinated about the history that he was born in. Tupac wasn’t always able to get what he wanted or needed.

Chapter 1
Dear Mama
Afeni’s birth name was Alice Faye Williams. In the mid-sixties she joined the Black Panther party and changed her name to Afeni Shakur. (Shakur: an Arabic name for “Thankful to GOD”). She became a large part of the New York 21 which was a group that was arrested for conspiring to destroy many elite businesses in New York by bombing methods.
Afeni was also street smart. She herself felt that the streets were her comfort zone. However, she was responsive to all the happenings that went on around her and the things she and her family went through as far as racial divide. Such things as, her grandmothers’ mixed husband being dragged through town by his own family as punishment for marrying outside his race and Afeni herself growing up in a neighborhood where she was constantly reminded that she was not good as white folks.
Afeni’s lifestyle and history really shaped what kind of person and mother she was. She taught her children how to be strong and to think before speaking. She kept them well read and informed of the goings on in the world. She felt that was her duty. Afeni was able to teach her kids from the skills she developed by being in the streets and the skills she encountered by being a radical, a part of the movement.

Chapter 2
"The Son of A Panther"

This chapter concentrates on the mind-frame of Tupac, “The Son of A Panther”, growing up under the influence of the movement in contrast with white politics.
When Tupac was less than a week old his mother took him to hear a political speech given by Minister Louis Farrakahn. We could say that this was the beginning of Tupac’s awareness of what the world was like. His mother surrounded him and herself with influential people. These same people saw something strong and inspiring in Tupac even at an early age, thinking to themselves that someday he will become a influential speaker in his own right, a militant for the cause.
Although Tupac was a product of the movement, he retained reservations. This comprehension of how much it costs to finance these revolutionary principles was conflicting to him. His thoughts were why was such responsibilities taken on by people with little money. To him it seemed the blacks with the less to give gave the most, including his mom. Yes he believed in being morally wealthy but he also felt why be deprived of its financial benefit? Where was the tangible profits?
