Homework

Today we reviewed Possessives, Section 7. We will write Essay Exam 2 next week: Monday-Tuesday. Bring in the templates completed in advance. We reviewed the errors and some of the exercises. If you have questions call me.

Homework is also to review the preface in The Rose that Grew from Concrete. Compare Afeni's reflections on her son to those of Nikki Giovanni and Leila Steinberg. Post your response to the reflective question here. Use paraphrase and direct quotes, one from each writer to support your argument. The response should be about three paragraphs.

Catch up on the posts. I didn't see many responses to Robert King, to student scenes, and other assignments.

Prefix: "A Rose that Grew from Concrete"

Afeni writes a poem, inspired by the honor of her son Tupac about "Celebrate Life". She thanked God for the gift he had given to her son. They are artistry for many different forms of expression and we should celebrate them. She states, "Celebrate the ability to feel free! Only then will you be free to feel (xii)." Tupac's heart and soul were reflected through his poetry.
Afeni's soul was the perfect reflection of Tupac.
Leila Steinberg was a great trustworthy friend to Tupac. She was entrusted with his poetry, that was a great honor. She was very grateful for that , not being able to put her gratitude into words. She states, "it is Pac's spirit that gives her breath". Her soul will continue the unfinished work he wanted to accomplish.
Nikki Giovanni is glad his poetry was finally being published. And glad that Tupac had taken the understanding of having no obligations to the universe, but to follow your own muse. She feels as though white society wants to pick our hero's in the image of what they should be, and demands us to make our own choices. She states, "he deserves to be taken seriously"(xvii).
We will see Tupac in heaven.

Preface: Afeni Shakur

Afeni Shakur thanks God for having a son so artistic. She praises Tupac of his skills and how he is a mirror of her soul. She talks about how he was never afraid to take chances and lived in music and poems. She misses him,

When you're not here
I measure the space
You used to occupy (xiv).

Forward: Tupac, C U in Heaven by Nikki Giovanni

Giovanni expresses that Tupac was a true artist who was daring and rapped about the truth. He wants the whole world know Tupac. Tupac wasn't only a tough gagnster, but a sensitive heart. You learn this from his collection of poems. As Giovanni said, "He deserves to be taken seriously and e must therefore mourn."

Introduction by Leila Steinberg

She mentions that Tupac wanted to create a new world through his music. "He wanted his art to instill honesty, integrity, and respect." Tupac believed that through art and education you can overcome the flaws in the world. She made Tupac's poems available to the public. She thinks that by reading his poems it may soften the hearts of many who judged him wrongfully. Tupac is just waiting for a better day.

Afeni's reflection on her son was short and simple. She expressed her gratitude versus Giovanni and Steinberg's love and passion for what Tupac is trying to do to change the world.

Reflection on The Three Ladies that were in Tupac Life

Afeni, his mother, the reflection in the mirror is she, but she feels her son’s soul. She reflects on how Tupac had a thirst for everything beautiful, education, language, arts, reading, music and poetry just to name a few. Remembering, Tupac’s amazing soul and what his journey was like. Trying to find peace and justice in this unforgiving world, Tupac did succeed giving the world his beautiful music and poetry.

Afeni states… “Tupac, I am grateful to God for the most precious gift of your life, your friendship, your love, and your indomitably honest, true spirit.”

Next, Nikki Giovanni speaks highly of Tupac as well. She comments on knowing early on this was a gifted child, from his poetry, music and films he had great talents to share with the world.

She explains things he tried to speak out on, were portrayed negative in the lime light. She was proud of Tupac, not caring what the media and anyone else thought. He was determined to speak the truth and from his heart.
She states…”He deservers to be taken seriously and we must therefore mourn.”

Finally, Leila Steinberg, who was intrigued with him the first time they met. He began quoting lines from Winnie Mandela’s book Part of My Soul Went with Him. Therefore, young she was shocked but impressed that this big eyed charming smile knew the lines by memory.

She talks about how he was in love with art, knowledge, education and the quest to help every youth he could so they could express what they were experiencing through some type of art or poetry. She also talks about obstacles that he had endured. Tupac’s poetry has been her teaching tool for the last six or so years.

By summer of 1998 she and Afeni, Tupac’s mother developed the first annual youth conference “Life goes on.”
She states…” Unfortunately, it took his death to teach us that when one man dies we all bleed.”

These three women were powerful in his life, and all have expressed what a heart of gold he had. Striving to succeed in a world that was filled with people trying to keep others oppressed. They shall never forget the wonderful and elated gifts that Tupac, the artist, philanthropist, prophet, the musician the rebel, the activist, and all time son has left to share with everyone.

Afeni was very good at teaching Tupac to read the whole newspaper. She was very smart and Tupac would learn from her.

Lelia Steinberg was a poetry workshop teacher. She met Tupac when he was seventeen. He told her how to teach the class this way. She felt that he changed the way she taught her classes and also as a woman and as a parent.

Nikki Giovanni was the woman who published Tupac poetry. She saying that Tupac should be taken seriously.
