Kailash Satyarthi: New Hero

How is the work Kailash Satarthi in agreement with the work Kristof and WuDunn hope to inspire with their book, Half the Sky.

What is one of the key elements in a successful abolishionist movement, especially for the young children?

What is the link between poverty and freedom as illustrated by Kailash Satyarthis's work?

Kailash Satyarthi

Kailash Satyarthi has saved tens of thousands of lives. At the age of 26 he gave up a promising career as an electrical engineer and dedicated his life to helping the millions of children in India who are forced into slavery by powerful and corrupt business- and land-owners. His original idea was daring and dangerous. He decided to mount raids on factories — factories frequently manned by armed guards — where children and often entire families were held captive as bonded workers.

After successfully freeing and rehabilitating thousands of children, he went on to build up a global movement against child labor. Today Kailash heads up the Global March Against Child Labor, a conglomeration of 2000 social-purpose organizations and trade unions in 140 countries.

Yet even as he has become a globally recognized figure, Kailash continues the gritty work of leading raids to free slaves. Kailash believes that he must focus on a range of activities -- from the most grassroots to the most visionary -- in order to win the fight.

What Does SACCS Do?

Since its inception in 1989, SACCS and its partners have liberated nearly 40,000 bonded laborers, many of them bonded, working in various industries, including rug manufacturing. But to free such children without offering new opportunities would, in Kailash's view, be meaningless.

Bal Ashram in Rajasthan, India is a transition center where newly-freed slaves are taught basic skills. Kailash describes the arrival of a girl recently freed from a stone quarry: "It's a joyous experience to watch the changing emotions flit across this beautiful girl's face. She's like an open book, and her varying expressions tell us a story: the story of transition from slavery to a new life of freedom. When her face lights up, it is clear she is taking her first steps toward freedom and belief in others."

Since the Ashram can only serve 100 children at a time, Kailash has begun a program called "Bal Mitra Gram" to encourage Indian villages to abolish child labor. In order to be a part of the program, an entire community must agree that no child will be put to work and every child will be sent to school.

While changing India village by village is a worthwhile pursuit, such a strategy could take centuries to achieve Kailash's goal, and he is not prepared to wait that long. So he has begun attacking the problem by harnessing the immense power of market forces.

Many rugs from South Asia are manufactured using child labor. Kailash believes that if consumers around the world knew how their expensive and colorful Indian rugs were made, they would no longer think they were so beautiful. He started "Rugmark," a program in which rugs are labeled and certified to be child-labor-free by factories who that agree to be regularly inspected. Kailash plans to extend the labeling program to other products such as soccer balls, another popular product that is commonly made by children.

Kailash says "If not now, then when? If not you, then who? If we are able to answer these fundamental questions, then perhaps we can wipe away the blot of human slavery."

In class we watched a video about a social entrepreneur. This man is named Kailash and he went around in his country to free slaves. He wants to free all the child laborers and places himself in dangerous situations to get them free. When I was watching the video, I was thinking to myself “wow, this guy is crazy but amazing.” The reason why I thought that he was crazy was because it is dangerous and he can get hurt from the mob. I respect him; he is doing something that he believes in. He is truly like a modern hero.

bravery is a word that many can tell you the definition but not everyone can show. Bravery is a characteristic of a lucky few in this world. Today in class we watched a film about a man named Kailash Satyarthi who shows bravery.Kailash shows bravery because he has gave up a career as an electrical engineer because he was dedicated to freeing kids in India from slavery. he has saved the life's of many kids, and i find that amazing because he started off with something that may sound impossible or hard to do and he went out and did it. it's interesting because a lot of people cant do what he did, and its really good to know that there are people who fight for the rights of those who need help.someone once said "there is light at the end of every tunnel" which means even if something seems dark/bad there will be light/hope coming up soon.well to me this story shows that there is hope.

Recently, we have watched a very interesting documentary; this documentary shows the liberations of people who have been force into a life of bondage and slavery. The man who heads the liberation project is Kailish Satyarthi. Once he had a promising career as an electrical engineer, but he relinquishes it all for a life of liberation. His line of work is extremely dangerous; he must raid places where human tracking is prevalent and rescue people. The problem with this is often times some form of mob is keeping people in bondage, in turn; trying to liberate them might cost him his life. Satyarthi states that in order to stop these atrocities people need to stop being oblivious; people need to give an active hand in the attempts to thwart corrupt dealings. Once people get involved in the efforts, Satyarthi believes the world will see the reduction of human trafficking.

It is no wonder why some people consider Kailash Satyarthi their hero. After watching the film in class, I was very impressed with this mans bravery, and courage. He risks his own life to free the lives of slaves that are forced to work without pay. It made me realize that there is a lot happening in the world that I don’t know about, and it made me sad how humans can be so heartless to treat others the way the owners were treating the slaves. I’m glad there are still good people out there that are actually doing something to help others that are in need. I had never heard about this before watching this documentary because no one ever talks about slavery anymore. I didn’t realize that it is still a problem today.

Though I was not at class for this video from what I can tell Kailash was a very strong person, and obviously brave for trying to free the child laborers. Its fascinating to me when someone is whiling to put their self out to help others. From what i have read from others it is motivating and inspiring to show that one individual can make a difference and have a voice in society by actions.

When I watched this video, I couldn’t believe that something like this happening in our days. I thought slavery was over almost 1000 years ago. I remember from my twenties (Indian moves I watched) rich people, signing dancing happy ending all the time. Of cause there were poor people too. But not slaves… I thought India is a big country, big population (second place in the World after China), it has huge Manufactures, Developed Industries and World recognized good Universities.
After the video I was frustrated. Why in same country one part is too rich, other ones too poor living as slaves. Why Government not doing something to care of these people, especially children …
I hope, Kailash Satyarthi not only one in India.

I really liked the documentary on Kailash Satyarthi. He really puts his life on the line to make a difference for his people and the future of his people.I didn't even know that people around the world are being held as slaves and that children are growing up as slaves.I think it's really sad and tragic.I do believe in Satyarthi he's making a difference by providing education to the children and working skills that they will need in the future. He's setting them up in the real world I think that's just what they need so that they can survive and take care of themselves when they get older. This movie was really touching and I'm glad that I'm aware of whats happening in the world.

Kailash Satarthi: New Hero

Kalash Satyarthi helped people in India who were forced to be slaves. Kailash made a difference to them, he freed thousands of children. He out people together to fight against child labor. In “Half The Sky” it talked about entrepreneurs helped women from being slaves, and being raped. Both stories have to do with entrepreneurs helping slaves. Also poverty and freedom that the children had issues in were hard to fix, but they got fixed anyway from the time and effort Kailash put in. he had people come together and work in industries and rug manufacturing. Kailash opened up bigger and better things for the children. They got out of poverty by working and saving their lives from being slaves.

What do SACCS Do?
Its partners liberated about 40,000 bonded labors they worked in different industries.
