In 1971 Mimi Silbert founded Delancey Street with four residents, a thousand dollar loan and a dream. She envisioned a place where substance abusers, former felons and others who had hit bottom would, through their own efforts, be able to turn their lives around.

Silbert has since built an empire grossing 20 million dollars a year with locations in New York, New Mexico, North Carolina and Los Angeles. She has never accepted a single penny of government funds.

Since those early days in a single house, Mimi Silbert has empowered more than 14,000 people to lead crime-free, drug-free lives in mainstream society. They have acquired skills, they attend college and they are part of the workforce.

Silbert says she has spent her career cultivating a "university of the streets." She calls it a "Harvard for losers," where the students are former pimps, prostitutes, junkies, drug dealers and armed robbers.

Her program's name comes from Silbert's own past. Delancey Street is a place on Manhattan's lower east side where immigrants like her parents came to make a new life for themselves

Clearly, Mimi Silbert is a nurturer. She provides opportunities for “rejects” of society to turn their lives of failure to accomplished dignified individuals. She understands that nobody can undo the past, but given a chance, one can tip the scale to be a courteous, courageous professional or mentor. Delancey Street provides education, job and business opportunities to these marginalized. Amazingly, the Delancy organization with the support of the community (that patronizes its business) is able to sustain and expand. Certainly, its good karma, what goes around comes around.

Mimi Silbert
Mimi Silbert is truly a hero in her own sense. She built a company to help others that wanted to changed their lives for the better, people that were criminals and wanted a second chance to say the least. Delancey street program provides ex criminals with the skills and knowledge they would need to become more successful outside of what their problems use to be. Silbert had a great success rate in Delancey street. Though people had come and left, some get what they need out of the program and some relapse to their old ways she continues the program. What caught me though is when she said that what happens in her program affects her because they are all like her family. Along with that when it was stated that after every group graduates its like the program is new again. Its amazing that she has transformed so many lives though this program, if I needed the program or knew someone tat needed it I would definitely use it or recommend it.

Mimi Silbert indentified that there was a problem whithin society. Numerous amounts of people who have live a life of crime, drug abuse, and murder. She understood that if no one would give these lost people a hand, who would? Most likely the "felons" would continue with the life of crime until they were dead of locked away for life.

Silbert wanted to help society in both worlds, the ex-cons and the mainstream world. She gave the ex-cons a new life and a turn around, and in the same tim, she is cleaning up crime with one person at a time.

Mimi Silbert

Mimi Silbert and the Delancey Street Foundation definitely understand the term, “second chance.” As I am sure many of the graduates from her program would attest. The program provides vocational skill sets as well as high school equivalency training to rehabilitated ex-cons. Basically, this is provided to the ones who really deserve it. Completely non-profit, the company survives on the revenues of the two main businesses of the moving company as well as a cooking school. As a sort of social entrepreneur, Mimi obviously could have made it in the “for profit” world, but decided to do a little more and give back. I say, bravo!

Mimi Silbert

Mimi Silbert helped the people who wanted new thing in their life regardless of what that person's background is. She provided trainings for these people, and with this simple training, it meant a world for these people to have something to be proud of in their life. Silbert's foundation defined hope in a great way. The foundation expanded as well as the opportunity for the people who wanted to change for the better. Woman like Mimi Silbert who never ask for a return, really is a good example to people and the other generations.

Today in class we watched a video about Mimi Silbert, a woman who is been a hero for so many prostitutes, drug dealers, and criminals. This kind of people doesn`t have many opportunities in this society because nobody trust them or like them. Mimi Silvert teach us that everybody needs a second opportunities because sometimes in life people make mistakes for a lack of money, support, and love.
Mimi Silvert founded the Delancey Street Foundation in the early seventies, and she provide shelter, and education for all this people with out accepting any money from the government.

Mimi silbert is a women who gives criminal a second chance at life and a job.In this film, it seems like mimi women really enjoy making food. She also seems to be extremely proud of the custumer worker interaction. This women is doing a great deed to people who have hard times in their lives. For instance, she gave a person a job that came out from prison, he was there for ten years. This is very progressive because alot of jobs would not give them jobs. People come to this Delancy street with an abundance of problems and delancy street help them with that and help them complete the course. This street gives them education, business, and jobs.

Delancey Street
Mimi Silbert identified the problem that inmates who are just released from prison don’t have a high chance of living a better life. This is a huge problem because it makes those people repeat offenders instead of quitting that life style. She faced the problem head on and created a facility where recently released inmates can have a chance at succeeding in her two-year program. This program includes training skills on how to move furniture safely and effectively. The program graduates most of their students. In fact some student are so moved by Delancey Street that they come back for a third year to pass down their skills on to other felons. I personally would use Delancey Street service if I could get a good deal because they are all ex-felons; if not then I’ll just call someone else.

Mimi Silbert is a great example to those who think that they can’t make a difference. She is a great role model for all the women because she has worked hard in order to help others who are in need, and necessitate a second chance in life. I am really impressed with everything she has done to help the people who are rejected by society because of their pasts. She helps pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers, junkies, and armed robbers, transform their life and change their old ways.

I really like the fact that she has a great attitude. She doesn’t give up, and thanks to her many lives have been changed. There is a part in the interview when she says, “I have no right to not try as hard as they do.” I can tell that she truly believes in what she is doing and really cares for these people. I see her as a true Hero because she is doing something that not many people are wiling to do.
