Thoughts on Alone by Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is a writer, dancer, and activist who was born April 4th 1928. She has won countless awards and has been credited for many things as well. I was able to find a poem of hers that interested me, and the following are my thoughts on a few parts.

Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing

This section discusses how she yearns to be at peace and content in her life, which I think a lot of people strive for.

That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone

This combined with (I think) one of the basic human needs of companionship in life, whether that be a real friendship, love interest or just a passion to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

There are some millionaires
With money they can’t use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They’ve got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone

She touches on the world of material possession as well. We all know that money and possessions won’t really fulfill us in the end, although they sure do help sometimes.

Now if you listen closely
I’ll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan

Here she intimates that all this might come to a head so to speak. Personally, I think that as most of us learn and grow we reveal these inherent truths to ourselves, most of us anyways.

Several months ago, I met Mary Rudge a poet laureate who lives and breathe poetry. She gave me a book on poems and tea recipes. I have chosen to read Passion Flower, a wedding toast. In the Chinese tradition, newly-weds serve tea to their in-laws, a gesture of “welcoming into the family.”
PASSION FLOWER
This is the tea I promise you
Holds all my secrets
Gives you power to know me
And all my heart forever.
This is the hour, the moment,
We become as one cup full
From which both drink
All our lives can hold.
In passion
Flower.

Desde El Primero

by

Godmother Leticia

Desde el primer respiro de aire,

Desde la primera vista de luz,

Desde la primera vez de tus pasos,

Desde la primera vez de mente.

Diaz se convierte en años, y años

se convierte una millinium. Amor

exisiste de una persona a otra.

Dejame que te asidero cuando

tienes miedo.

Dejame darte de comer cuando

tienes hambre.

Dejame acaricie te cuando tienes

sueño.

Dejame a señarte amor.

Duerme, duerme mi amor, duerme que

mañana sera otra dia. Yo te amare

toda via en la mañana.

Since the first breath of day,

Since the first day of sight,

Since the first day of steps,

Since the first day of mind.

Days turn to years, years turn to a

millenium. Love exists from one

person to the other.

Let me hold you when your scared,

Let me feed you when your hungry,

Let me caress you when your sleepy,

Let me show you love.

Sleep, sleep my dear, sleep for

tomorrow is another day. I will

still love you in the morning.

Alicia Keys

A woman who I admire is Alicia Keys. She was raised by a single mother in Manhattan, New York. Her occupations are: a singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist, composer, arranger, record producer, actress, music video director, author, and poet. She started playing the piano at the age of seven and attended a Professional Performing Arts School. Later, she attended Columbia University but dropped out to pursue her music career. Now she has sold over 30 million albums world wide. Most of her songs are about love, heart break, and women empowerment.

Besides her music career, she has used her fame to reach out to people and help those in need. She is the co-founder and global Ambassador of Keep a Child Alive, which is a non-profit organization that provides medicine to families infected with HIV and AIDS in Africa. She has also donated money to From tha Ground Up, a non-profit organization that gives children and teenagers scholarships.

I am' by Kimberley Jay

i am the risk taker....whose power is the upper hand

i play to win and i will strike back with a spin...
giving props to a blue print that hits the spot on my ambitions ego trip...
yet it's competence in the vision that captures the essence of wisdom...
that recruits loyalties to pave a path to glory...
consistency is the key to unlock my destiny...

i am the warrior princess....whose power is to master self control to tame fears and impulses to prove
what stuff im made of...

i strive for equality and fight with morality...
to keep hold of my mentality, so i can continue with vitality...
im responsible for my own decisions and bring forth to life my visions...
derailing potential collisions, dispositions and conditions...
i have too many ambitions, im on an life altering mission...

i am the lady advocate....whose power is expertise in the form of life experiences...

i have been there, done that and can be trusted to judge and perceive...
i will take it like it is, i own my own authority...
i honor my authentic nature and wisdom but, use my sharp wit responsibly...
and i accept that not everyone will warm up to me...

i am the people pleasure....whose power is the bubble of denial...

i exercise my prerogative, to humor the ridiculous...
go out on a limb or remain the pious...
i can step it up, hang it up, submit to the charade or sacrifice to what end?...
but it's the lame justification that prompt posturing...
i can take it, fake it or simply call the bluff...
i can give them a rope and they'll hang themselves soon enough...

i am the domestic diva....whose superpower is to conceive, nurture and create potential by labors of love...

im mother to natural ideals, invention and conditioned emotion...
i liberate dramatic results to inspire devotion...
i set aside trends and time...
to exhibit style and charm assigned...
by heartfelt wild fantasies and passion...
but in true multitask fashion...

i am the magnetic one....whose power relies in my innate ability for reflection...

i am a goddess that reflects a woman's magnetism and mystique...
very unique.... a classic.... antique...
i mirror my hearts desires...
all that i need and all that i'll acquire...
rising above all boundaries..
shinning brightly and smiling sweetly...

i am the golden child....whose power is expressing my love, joy and pride...

i nurture an environment of deep devotion...
armed with love and most sincere emotion...
patience is my power, as i covet this intense passion...
as i bestow upon others, my gift of compassion...
and i am never too busy...
to connect to those who trust, love and need me...
"it's the thought that counts" many will say "i would die for them"...
but i can only live for them...

i am empowered by embracing my emotional gift...
and unconditional love is what i uplift...
