Presentations
ME- The experience was kind of scary talking in front of people with all the attention on me. But what I can say is that I think I got the main drift of the story across. I loved my quote because I think that it really supported my idea. Adding the little parts about Amy Tans life I feel helped the presentation as well.

SODO- talked about the book “The Bonesetter Daughter”. The good thing about her presentation was that she connected it to her own family’s relationships and how it connects to the book. She explained how the mother in the book was not use to the American customs yet, and the daughter did not understand why she acted the way she did.

SANDY-she did the same book as Sodo but elaborated on how the daughter discovered things about her mothers life back in china, and the grandmothers relationship. And of chores covered about how the mother in the book was not use to the American customs yet, and the daughter did not understand why she acted the way she did.

MELVIN-he had the book “A Piece of Cake”, by Cupcake Brown. He explained how his woman went through a lot, getting rape, getting involved in gangs, and going through multiple foster homes. Though this all happen she got into community college and became a transfer student to UCSD, and became a lawyer. It showed how one can better their lives by education, and that any one can succeed after going through so many obstacles.

Book Report Response

Shyann- The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Shyann explains that a mother has a difficult time raising her daughter to be an American or Chinese. I think that a lot of parents have a hard time with that when they come from a different country. My parents were the same but wanted my siblings and I to learn both.

Sodo- The Bonesetter Daughter by Amy Tan. She uses her own experience and related it to the book. I thought that it was cleaver to do that. I think that is always best to relate to the book to understand it more.

Sandy- The Bonesetter Daughter by Amy Tan. Sandy was talking about what happens in the book. A Chinese girl born in America. She does not understand her mother but finds out more about her past. I think that it interesting if a child finds out more about their parents. I know I am when I find out about one of my parents.

Melvin- A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown. Melvin tells us how she got her name. It is about her finding out that her mother died and then went to different foster home. She later became a successful lawyer. The book has a good story about a person that can change for the best. It is sometimes difficult to get out of things like gangs and do something better.

In Shyann’s book the joy luck club it describes the hardships of immigrants adjusting to the new American culture. Their kids grow up in this culture are accustomed to it and distance away from their parents culture

In Sodo’s book the bonesettlers it describes once again, the hardships of immigrations and how many people never fully embrace this new culture
Sandy also did this book. The author Amy tan must have been popular to read because three people choose them. I thought that the stories were all very similar. The main theses in these three books were the hardships Amy faces
Melvin did the book a piece of cake. I thought this was fresh and exciting because it was from a different author. The story is about a girl named cupcake who had a life in the streets. She wanted more form herself and decided to go to college. From there she went on to law school and became a successful lawyer.

I thought that everyone did great during their presentation. Shyann did her on The Joy Luck Club, and she talks about it is about Chinese mothers and daughters. Sodo did her on the same book as mines The Bonesetter’s Daughter she talked about how it is about a mother from China and her daughter being born form America. She said she can relate to this book because her daughter is American and she is not from here so, it’s something she can relate to. She likes the book. Melvin’s book was Apiece of Cake and it was an autobiography about Cupcake Brown. She got her name Cupcake because her mother ate a lot of cupcake and when the doctors asked her what she wanted her daughter name to be she said cupcake. I chose The Bonesetter’s Daughter because I like a lot of the books that Amy Tan wrote. I feel like I can relate to it a lot too. My experience presenting was sort of unprepared so I really didn’t know and I was sort of nervous.

Book Report Response

Shyanne Kinzer – The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
Amy Tan had a difficult time raising her daughter because she was born in China and her daughter in America. Any parent who was born in another country raising a child that speaks a different language would find it difficult. My mother is also from another country, she always tells us that we should learn more Cambodian because we do not know that much. It is difficult to speak with her when I know very little Cambodian.

Sodo – The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan
Ruth’s mother always criticized any age. She connected with the book. She used her own experience. She explained how difficult it is to raise her children. Although they may not connect as much, she pushes her children to become successful and live a happy life.

Sandy – The Bonesetter’s Daughter by Amy Tan
Ruth’s mother was born in China. Ruth is confused as to why her mother hasn’t assimilated to American society. Ruth learns of her mothers past. I can relate somewhat to Ruth. I did not know that much about my mother and her past but learned recently about her past.

Melvin H. – A Piece of Cupcake by Cupcake Brown
Daughter was accidentally named cupcake. She was renamed by her father but the name cupcake stuck with her. Her mother died from an epileptic seizure. Her father was not her biological father so she went to an orphanage. She was raped by the owner’s son and was treated horribly. She joined a gang and went into prostitution, but went to college to change her life.

I honestly think that they all did a good job its not easy going infront of people talking while everyone is looking at you . For SODO & Sandy they both talked about the same book which gave me a broader outlook on what the book was about hearing 2 people talk about the smae book but about different scens within the book

Shyann - Did a wonderful job the fact she took her presentation serious and came dress to impress was a + AND as the listener i was able to really understand what the book was about

Melvin- Book was interesting and funny at the same time. He talked about many different topics that happened within the book

Shyann's book The joy luck Club by Amy Tan is really interesting. I like how she had a sheet of paper and read it for us. It makes me think that she is really prepared to present.

Sodo's book The Bonesetter Daughter. I like how the book relates to her family. And she made some good point about people who moved in America and still arent used to it yet.

Sandy reviewed the same book as Sodo's. Sandy explained it in details. She focused on the daughter's discovery of her mother's story.

Melvin's book A piece of Cake is about a girl named cupcake, and how her life had some ups and downs. But later on, she decided to go to a community college for 5 years and then transfer to UC San Diego. She then later on became a successful Lawyer.

Today we enjoyed the book presentation of Shyann, Sodo, Sandy, and Melvin.

I- Shyann Kinzer:
The Joy Luck Club witted by Amy Tan
This book talk about the relationship of a Chinese mother with her daughter who was born in the USA. The mother have to struggle so much raising her daughter because the Chine culture is very different than the American culture.
II-Sodo and Sandy:
The Bonesetter`s Daughter witted by Amy Tan
This book is about a Chinese American girl who learn about her mom`s past in China. She also learns about the relationship that her mother had with her grandmother when she was young. Later the daughter ended up living in San Francisco with her white boyfriend. The conclusion about this book is the things that a mother can teach to her children’s, especially about culture and values.
VI- Melvin H:
A Piece of Cake
This book is about a very young girl who had a very hard life after her mother died when she was eleven years old. When she was eleven years old, she was put on a foster home and later she is raped by her foster father. After that, she escapes and becomes a member of a gang, and later a prostitute. Many years later, the girl decided to enroll to college and later to San Diego University and became a lawyer. This book it is an amazing tale and also shown that people can have a second chance in life, especially having a good education.

Khan's presentation was on arranged marriage. (I can't remember the book title or author's name) Khan is against arranged marriage, because in her opinion “it’s not right,” and magnified with cousin’s failed arranged marriage. However, I have witnessed successful arranged marriage. The couple worked harder to sustain the marriage. I think, partly because of the docile nature of Asian women and partly because of the family honor that is at stake. What I know for sure in any human relations is that one has to give of oneself unconditionally, and when it hurts one should look the other way and say “never mind it.”

I thought Tracey Lee's presentation was very well done. I was quite honestly surprised by how well she had researched her subject. In response to Professor Sabir's rapid fire questions she was on it. Good Job Tracey :)
