Cyber-Assignment for ENG 201 1-3

In Monday afternoon's class, homework was to complete the templates for Essay 1 and bring in electronically. Email the templates to yourself.

How was the discussion Monday? Post reflections on the Literature Circle. How was it? What did you enjoy most? Least? How did it help you learn more or expand your appreciation of the text, its themes and concepts?

Homework is to read up to chapter 4. Next week students need to be up to chapter 6 for Monday, Sept. 20. We have a library orientation next Wednesday. We will meet there.

American Culture Presentation

We will start class with the American Culture presentations. Students are to bring in an object that represents American cultural values. Students explain what their object is and how it fulfills the assignment (smile).

Rehearse the presentation. It should be about 1-3 minutes.

I gave students an assignment sheet for the entire semester for SPHE. Ask for a copy if you missed it. I will post it later.

The literature discussion on Monday was fantastic because I had alot of fun meeting my classmates and getting to know them better. Also I got a better understanding of other peoples perspectives on how they feel about the book.I enjoyed talking to people about the subject "slavery" because this word is basically what the beginning chapters and possibly the whole book is about. There was nothing I didn't like to be honest.I really feel that we should have more literature circles because its a great way for classmates to be able to bond with each other and make the book funner by discussing it. By this literature circle, I appreciate "The Known World" more because I was able to learn about how and why Henry Townsend was a black slave owner and why he chose to become that. He wanted a feeling of relief and that power of being in charge of people.

Something that symbolizes American culture I felt had to be money. it has its good and bad outcomes of having it but as we all know we need money for everything. Even to get our a basic essential needs of living requires money. i know I use money for food, a place to live, gas, and alot of other things. Money helps aid people in rural countries, advance in public schools and education around the world. The more you have the more power, which gets you more respect. Only downfalls to it is when people use it in unsmart ways. Such as buying islands just to do it and although we need it supporting war. we shouldnt be in the position to have to support war. Healtcare and Schools are much more needed places for money.

I really enjoyed the literature discussion that we had on Monday. It felt nice to actually discuss the book with my other classmates. I was able to listen and respond to a lot of question my classmates had. The book The Known World is not a very easy book to understand especially since there is a new character introduced in the book every chapter so the group discussions are very helpful. The literature circle also gave me the opportunity to actually get to know my classmates and learn their names and get their thoughts about the book. I really enjoyed that part. It turned out that we all had different questions about the book and they all were quite interesting. One of my discussion partners, Gmo, asked the question, Why did Henry begin to see Mr. Robbins as a father figure. I Thought that question was very interesting. It was good that we all got a chance to all say our opinion on every question that was asked.

It's always a good thing when we get the whole class to have class discussion about the book. In my opinion, sometimes its good because not everyone in the class will read, so once we discuss in class, then those students who don't read will get a sense of what is happening, yet they wouldn't know what the details are. it makes the student have to go back to get more into detail. It also shows who read and who didn't, depending on who answers most and doesn't say anything at all.

In Class Discussion
Today’s in-class discussion was great. Every time that we all get into a topic that we enjoy to talk about, it is great. The whole class participates and get really into the topic. Typically, the topic will take up most of the class time but it is worth it. To hear all my fellow classmates discuss a topic they like is fascinating. The way that they articulate themselves and debate on the topic is interesting, in a good way of course.
