Authority - P. 80 Robbins shot Elias in the leg and sliced off his ear.

Definition - Even though Robbins is a family man and well off in life, he still shows overpowering motives toward people who are less fortunate than him.

analogy - Robbins cruelty seems like Hitler's harsh tactic using.

Consequence - Robbins harsh tactics were shown after Elias was caught running away. when Elias was captured Robbins shot him in the leg and sliced off his ear.

Testimony - Robbins is an authoritive figure who is very strict when it comes to discipline.

Hypocrisy is the pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles. A pretense of having some desirable or publicly approved attitude.
Analogy is a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based:
Consequence is the effect, result, or outcome of something occurring earlier.
Testimony is the evidence in support of a fact or statement.
Topic: power

Analogy: Travis reminds me of a dirty cop.
Consequence: because Augustus is colored he has no power. Although he is free, it doesn’t change the fact that he is black. Travis showing Augustus that the patrollers, (white man) controls who is considered a free man or not.

Testimony: Augustus is sold back into slavery. Travis mentions that he wants to teach Augustus a lesson. He wants to show him that he can’t just walk around like a free man. He must still act like a slave although he is free.

Racist views can be caused because of privilege in a society.

Definition- In the story Mr.Robbins a very close friend of Henry’s explains to Sheriff
Skiffington how Henry was mistreated because of his race, ‘“Travis gave him bad treatment not two nights ago when he was leaving my place. He hit Henry once and might have done more if Barnum Kinsey hadn’t stepped in to take Henry’s side”’ (169)

Analogy-Living in the south before the Civil War as black person amongst white people was as if you were in a ring all alone with people who wanted you to perish.

Consequence-The cause of blacks being discriminated against in the south is slavery.

Testimony- Whites didn’t view blacks as humans and treated them as cattle for so long that it became a way of life for them, while Travis sold Augustus(a free black man), his fellow patrolmen, Barnum, protested to which he replied, ‘“You taking the nigger side now? Is that it? You stepping away from the white man and takin the nigger side?’”(217)

Topic- Privilege

Definition- a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor

Analogy- Travis's way of working is like the saying "Driving While Black".

Consequence- Augustus was sold back into slavery due to the fact that he didn't pay Travis the respect he thought he deserved.

Testimony- Travis is the man with authority and he takes advantage of that.

Definition-Even though Robbins is a family man, and is well set for life, he still had overpowering motives towards people who are less fortunate than himself.

Analogy- Robbins actions towards slaves are worse than John Skiffington. As Robbins keeps and mistreats his slaves, Skiffington tries to release them and set them free.

Consequences-These harsh tactics were shown when Elias was caught trying to running away. Robbins not only shot him, but he also sliced his ear.

Testimony-Robbins is an authoritative figure, but also very strict when it comes to discipline towards other.
