Assignments

I am posting the assignments for the rest of the semester and will give them to students as well. You already have SPHE and we are behind, so if you feel like the pace has picked up, it has, so hold on and stay with us.

The assignments are due when they are due, if you are late, I hope the essay comes in with a passing mark. The final drop date is in November. If you are not serious about the course, drop now.

The Murder of Willie Francis Response

In class today we watched a movie about a black seventeen year old southern boy, by the name of Willie Francis. Francis was out one day and was wrongly arrested for a murder. While on trial his attorney went behind his back and changed his plea from not guilty to guilty, to speed the process of his conviction. He was found guilty and was sentenced to death by the electric chair.
He supposedly was electrocuted but didn’t die, so the court system of Tennessee sentenced him to be electrocuted again. When the Justices of the Supreme Court heard this they some were appalled, and some appealed this decision. One Justice in particular was Frank Furtor, he says, “I watched over it like a mother watches over a feverish child,” concerning Francis’s case. Eventually, all the Justices came around and appealed the execution.
Then in a surprise twist the truth about the night of Willie’s execution came out. He and his executioner went out for a night on the town and got drunk. Normally a warden would get a professional executioner to come out and do the job but this time they hired a rookie. On May 9 in 1947 the state of Tennessee killed Willie Francis, he survived a young son at that time. Before he died he told the woman looking after his child to “take care of that boy, you hear.” The day before he didn’t eat his last meal because it was chicken, he was Catholic and couldn’t eat meat on a Sunday.

Willie Francis
This film for Willie Francis being wrongly accused for crimes he did not committ and being incarcerated for so long was a harsh thing to watch. His most jail time was served was when he was supposed to e in high school, he had went to the electric chair twice by the time he would have been a senior . he also dropped out of high school due to a severe stuttering problem. Incidents like this occur all over the world and race played a major role in this situation. the jury went to the majority of the vote in the beginning because they were all white they wanted to give the black man a sentence with not th least bit of evidence. Willie's life was ruined but his family and friends had stuck by him. he knew he didnt deserve this, but he also understood there were so many racist people in the world and there was nothing he could do about it. This is when i look at today and try and tell people we must stick together because all we have is ourselves. but then again race shouldnt be a issue God didnt. want this in his worl and we are tearing it apart each day
