The New Heroes Cyber-Assignments

Respond to "The New Heroes: Kailash Satyarthi" program your watched this morning here. For the rest of the programs, also respond and post here.

Kailash Satyarthi from http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/meet/satyarthi.html
Projects: Global March Against Child Labor, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude (SACCS), Rugmark

Locations: New Delhi, India (headquarters), partners in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Kailash Satyarthi has saved tens of thousands of lives. At the age of 26 he gave up a promising career as an electrical engineer and dedicated his life to helping the millions of children in India who are forced into slavery by powerful and corrupt business- and land-owners. His original idea was daring and dangerous. He decided to mount raids on factories — factories frequently manned by armed guards — where children and often entire families were held captive as bonded workers.

After successfully freeing and rehabilitating thousands of children, he went on to build up a global movement against child labor. Today Kailash heads up the Global March Against Child Labor, a conglomeration of 2000 social-purpose organizations and trade unions in 140 countries.

Yet even as he has become a globally recognized figure, Kailash continues the gritty work of leading raids to free slaves. Kailash believes that he must focus on a range of activities -- from the most grassroots to the most visionary -- in order to win the fight.

After watching this movie it really ouched me. I also thought slavey was over in the world after the blacks were set free. Discussing many topics with friends and family had me open my eyes and realize slavery is still oing on, and in many places. This film showd parents selling their children which is totally wrong. Children were working for 12 hours each day and if something went wrong it turned into 18 or 19 which is ridiculous. Kailash quoted "the way to abolish slavery is to see no child goes through it." Tha quote really toched me, I see we really need to change the world and ourselves because what pains we have our kids endure can really put an effect on their outcome in life.

The Bicycle
In many places in the world HIV and Aids take a big roll in the lives of people, but we see a vast spread of this in Africa. People who went through as ARV patients who were sick and nearly dying all came back to thir normal selves of being healthy. Their hair grew back and skin looke normal and were finally able to breath again. A central hospital consisted of 9 nurses and doctor and thousands of patients. For this African to have a bike to ride an help people was an amazing act because he helped alot of people lives. i hope this organization can get funded so there can be more bicycles to travel to people who cant make it to a hospital to save their lives. i know this would be something i would be willing to doate to and my friends would also.

Willie Francis
This film for Willie Francis being wrongly accused for crimes he did not committ and being incarcerated for so long was a harsh thing to watch. His most jail time was served was when he was supposed to e in high school, he had went to the electric chair twice by the time he would have been a senior . he also dropped out of high school due to a severe stuttering problem. Incidents like this occur all over the world and race played a major role in this situation. the jury went to the majority of the vote in the beginning because they were all white they wanted to give the black man a sentence with not th least bit of evidence. Willie's life was ruined but his family and friends had stuck by him. he knew he didnt deserve this, but he also understood there were so many racist people in the world and there was nothing he could do about it. This is when i look at today and try and tell people we must stick together because all we have is ourselves. but then again race shouldnt be a issue God didnt. want this in his worl and we are tearing it apart each day

The social entrepreneur that is profiled is Kailash Satyarthi.
Kailash Satyarthi identified the problem of slavery in India.
The name of the organization he started was Bachpan Bachao Andolan and South Asian Coalition on Child Servitude. He serves the communtiy by educating the children that used to be slaves and give them opportunity to succeed in life and also rescuing, feeding, and sheltering the ones that brought to the camp. They decided to address this issue because slavery still exist in the world and there are local heroes in the real world tryig to stop this issue. To end child slavery and all slavery
They work as one, they are in the same team, helping each other try make their community better . This movie made me believe that, there are still human trafficing and slavery exist in this world, and also there are heroes that are trying to stop that. Kailash Satyarthi is a hero because ended his career as an engineer and started to help hand in others to have a better life and thats inspiring.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, rehabilitation benefits those who are drug addicts, former felons, homeless people and those who hit rock bottom because it helps them get back to their right mind. On the other hand most people believe that rehabilitation does not work and that the ex-cons will stick to their old criminal ways. The Delancey Street foundation may help for a while, but there’s only so much help someone can get, resulting in a relapse that may lead to death. For example, a former participant in the program had a good few years without drug abuse and suddenly began to use drugs again and lead to his death. Rehabilitation can only help for a period of time.

Thesis: Pro Argument

Delancey Street Foundation is one of the most successful rehabilitation centers in the United States and therefore more should be built. Additional rehabilitation centers can make possible ex cons, drug addicts, former felons and those who hit rock bottom to structure their lives. They can also be given a second chance to rebuild their life.

Delancy Street is a non profit drug rehabilitation program that assists ex cons and drug addicts re enter the work force. Delancy Street is also unique because of the fact that it runs thru its own contributions. Delancy Street was co founded in 1971 by Mimi Silbert, a psychologist from the East Coast. However there are still skeptics that question the effectiveness of the program. But Delancy Street has shown that it has improved the lives of 14000 graduates to lead productive lives.

i was greatly moved by the effort the man made to recue as many slaves as he could. 52 slaves were rescued and taken to safe house, their they will learn to read ans write to get ahead in life. Not only there were many poor people but held a great deal of hope, to one day bringing change to other underpriviledge people by educating them. knowledge is power as the rescuer note. Education will teach others that violence and slavery is not the way to a healthy future for them.

Kailash Satyarthi

In the country of Sierra Leone in a small West African town, a woman by the name of Yeabu suffered from an obstructed pregnancy that rendered her with Vesico-Vaginal Fistula. This occurred because in her rural town she couldn’t get the proper healthcare she needed during her labor. Delivering her seventh child took three days and during this time the tissue surrounding her bladder died as well as her child, causing her to develop Vesico-Vaginal Fistula shortly after. When this occurred her friends and village acquaintances shunned her and would not socialize with her anymore. She became depressed because of her handicap and was isolated for four years from everyone except her family.

Then one day the Chief of her village came to her and told her of a program called Mercy Ships in the capital of Freetown that could potentially heal her. Mercy Ships is a non-profit American Organization that operates in third world countries such as Africa and Asia giving services to its inhabitants. Yeabu agreed to go and while there met with the only doctor in the town that performed Vesico-Vaginal Fistula surgery, Dr. Louise, is of African descent and gives back to her people by performing these operations. This obstructed labor complex has stricken many women in Dr. Loiuse’s community and out of those hundreds she is able to treat approximately three hundred and fifty, with an eighty percent recovery rate.

After Yeabu’s surgery she was cured of her ailment and went back to her village to be greeted by the only people who associated with her, her family. In a heart warming statement at the end she says, “I knew one day God would heal me.”

After reading amd watching clips of Kailash Satyarthi, I give him a lot of credit for doing the things that he does! He gave up his electrical engineer, which is a high paying job, to go to India and help with the child labor out there. I believe to this day, it is still going on, and he is trying to improve their conditions out there. Children start working out there at an early age, and keep going until they get old. I give lots of credit to this man!

After watching this film I was amazed. Kailash had a great job that many would love to have but he left that job to do something he felt was going to make a differnce in many lives. It is amazing that he is so touched by the children in India to the point where he himself went out there to try and stop child labor. Child labor is soemthing that no one should be a part of. Kailash is an amazing person for doing what he did and is continuing to do. It is completely wrong that parents can even sell their kids. Child labor should be abolished because it is a crime.

After watching this videos, I felt like not everyone in the world is cruel. In my opinion, people who are rich and willing to help is the god of the poor's lives. Because many of the people who is rich, but do not even bother to spend some money to help out the one that need it. When I realize that slavery still exist when it should have ended many years ago. I really admire Kailash because he was actually brave enough to go in the village and free thousands of people because not everyone is brave enough to actually throw everything out and give everything he can for the poors. This is something that not everyone can do.

E-Waste: Technology Dumping Grounds

In the documentary, Ghana: A Digital Dumping Ground, I learned about the cause
of waste in Third World countries, as well the effects of this business. Countries such as
Ghana, China, and India, are mile long electronic waste fields, which are supplied by
industrial countries like America, the UK, and Germany. These countries are
technologically advance and encounter a lot of computer waste so they, in an effort to
save their own land, ship them to these countries whose people ravage through them
collecting scrap metal and gold, developing health defects because of the toxic fumes that
surround them.

The devastating dumping was documented by an undergraduate group of
journalists, from The University of British Colombia. They documented the project in an
effort to bring awareness to this secret dumping. They encountered tons of toxic
computer waste, and children as well as adults search through the rubble in search of
golden scraps and iron. The waste is shipped in containers that are labeled as donations,
only fifty percent are reusable. In China, the dumping is big business and Hong Kong
makes a huge profit from it, even though there are laws to stop this type of behavior
there. In Ghana, mostly children scavenge for scraps and India has created a lot of
technical waste themselves, so they are beginning to recycle. They turn the scraps into
eco-friendly watches and other accessories. The recycling, however, hasn’t stopped everyone from this hazardous job. One man recounted, “Sometimes the fumes make me sick, but if I don’t do it I don’t get paid.”

After watching this film I was shocked and breathless. Kailash left his wonderful job to do something he felt was going to make a difference in many lives. Him going out to India to try and stop child labor was such an amazing deed. Child labor is something that no one should be a part of. It almost fits in the category of slavery. There are not many differences that I can see between child labor and slavery. Kailash is definitely considered a hero to those he helps. This video made me think to myself, is slavery really over? Child labor should not occur any wear. Children deserve to be children and have a choice to create their own life. This film was a perfect example once again of one person making a difference.

Kailash is such an amazing and one of a kind person to dedicate his life for the children in India. The fact that he devoted his life for thousands is something not everyone could or would do. The life he had was a success for him but the suffering the children and families in India endured made him gave up his life to save them. I admire him greatly.
