Social Entrepreneur Feedback and Self-Reflections

Today we heard from two students, Ronald and Edwin on their research into social entrepreneurship. Post your reflections here audience, as well as self-reflections presenters.

Think about what strategies each presenter employed to make his paper presentation successful. Talk about the presenter's growth as scholars. Give examples. What did you learn about social entrepreneurs and what did you learn about your classmates?

Social Entrepreneur Presentations

Edwin and Ronald did a fantastic job today with their presentations. Ronald went first and his presentation was fluent and kept me interested. Compared to his book report presentation, he did very well. Ronald barely read off of the paper he had in his hand because he knew what he was talking about. Edwin did a great job as well. His abstract paper is very informative as well as his presentation. The amount of information that he has on his social entrepreneur is great. He did do the same person as his book report giving him more information to work with. Edwin definitely improved with this presentation. He seemed more confident with this presentation than the last one. Overall, both presentations were great improvements and great to listen to.

Presenting my social entrepreneur has been a great experience for me in this English class. Usually it is hard for people to get up in front of their friends and present a serious topic without seeming as a joke. This semester I have also taken speech classes and which I can say I have used those skills to do my presentation. The first presentation I was a bit nervous because I don’t like standing in front of big crowds but I have learned to grow over the fear. Edwin’s presentation was great. Even though he presented on Greg Mortenson before it felt has if he done a whole new presentation. I felt each time I learned a new thing. I also can say I learned some new things about myself. Being that I just turned 19 I am maturing as a individual I am learning to overcome fears I have had over the years.

I really enjoyed Ronald presentation on Alice Waters today. He seemed to really know his information. Their was a major difference in the way he presented this time compared to when he did his book report presentation. He was very confident in his self and wasn’t nervous. The last time he presented, he seemed a little uncomfortable speaking in front of the class but this time he adjusted very well. I could recognize that Ronald came very prepared this time around by practicing and fully understanding the material he was presenting. Ronald gave a wonderful presentation today.

Social Entrepreneur Presentations

Three cups of Tea peer review

I thought that Edwin’s book report was well presented; it was a fluid presentation and was thoroughly educated on his choice of social entrepreneur. I liked the story of Greg Mortenson opening up schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan because I have an “adopted” family which is from Pakistan. Since they have been living in the country for 20 years now, they themselves were not affected from Mortenson’s work, but maybe a few of their family members who are in Pakistan may currently involve with his schools. Edwin has been one of the top students in my opinion, in the class since day one. And I think it wont stop there.

Alice Waters
Ronald’s report was also educational. Alice Waters is a local social entrepreneur. Opening restaurants and naming them after her children. I also enjoyed that there were some statistics involved in the report. All together it was a good report. I think Ronald has grown in the class. Seems to always get good grades and stays on top of his assignments and willing to go first in any presentation the class has had.

Presentation Responses

Today Ronald and Edwin presented their social entrepreneurs. Ronald did Alice Waters and Edwin did Greg Mortenson. This was their second presentation and it was different from their first because they were more comfortable giving their speeches. When Ronald presented about Alice I learned a lot about her I didn’t know she not only is a writer but has started many organic restaurants and began in Berkeley. The most interesting thing I learned was that she serves elementary schools and the healthy food has improved their grades in classes K-5 by 21.6%. In Edwin’s presentation I learned more about Greg and how he has a partnership in Asia that recycles and donates the money for his Afghanistan and Pakistan schools.

Both Ronald and Edwin's presentations were remarkable for their organization and thoroughness. Both men knew their material and felt comfortatble discussing it.

Edwin read his notes, perhaps he was nervous. Despite his limited eye contact with his audience, we were able to measure his growth as a resercher.

For both students, all the questions were answered and those posed afterwards were also answered. I liked Ronald's connection to Waters via his school project at St. Mary's. I am not certain why Edwin chose this topic, perhaps he plans to go into education and thought the idea of educating girls, a population underserved in East Asia an intriguing prospect.

I liked the way Ronald also encouraged his audience to volunteer with Waters to develop more edible school yards.

Visuals would have helped. It would also have helped if the students had let the SE speak and showed a video. I think for Edwin a map of the area where Mortenson is developing schools would have been helpful, especially for those who do not know where Pakistan and Afghanistan are in relationship to America.

Ronald's presentation would have been enhanced if he'd showed us pictures of a few of the gardens, especially the one at St. Mary's.

Overall though: B+

Presenting was very fun today. It was a wonderful experience. I feel that today’s presentation was tremendously better than my book report presentation. I felt very comfortable in front of the class today. My last presentation caught me a little off guard. I was not sure how my instructor wanted us to deliver the presentation and was also unsure of what she expected. This time around, I knew exactly what she wanted and how she expected the presentation to be presented. Overall, today I recognized that I am somewhat of a good public speaker and public speaking could very well be one of my good qualities.

Social Entrepreneurs Presentaions
Today Regan presented his socail entrepreneur on Mr. Michael Mcbride. It felt as if Regan was really prepared, although no abstract i was able to follow along. Regan seemed passionate about the topic as if he wanted to do some of the same acts as McBride. Going from this presentation from his book report Regan has grown tremmendously. he seemed more comfortable and with that being the presentation flowed.

Paula Goldman:
Adalie's presentation was excellent. The abstract was a bit confusing but once she started speaking it really started making sense. I guess you can say she really has a way with words. Just like the book report presentation she did a good job but i do see some areas she has grown in.

John Perkins:
Joushua's presentation was a good one. I dont remember his book report presentation but I am sure it was aas good as this one. He seemed to have mastered the topic and gave so much information to me. All these presenters today have really put in the work and it has shown.

Social Entrepreneur presentations

Since the first in class presentation about our book report I was already impressed by Ronald's and Edwin's skill as presenters. In contrast to the first presentation, both presenters were extremely confident. Staring at the manuscript was not an issue at all, because it was obvious that both presenters mastered almost every little details about their social entrepreneur. As always, interaction with the audience was one of Ronald's strategy to gain everyone's attentions and support. Edwin's chosen topic was very captivating. Overall, both presenters have proven that they are going in the right direction towards being very skilled scholars. Congratulations to both of them.

Adalie Villalobo, Joshua Gonzalez, and Vanessa did whatever was withing their power to teach the class about their social entrepreneur. They were all pretty comfortable being in front of the class. I strongly believe they are growing as presenters. And I am pretty convinced that they are also heading towards the right direction as scholar.
