I did not watch or listen to President Obama’s State of the Union address last night. I didn’t know what it was about or what it addressed. Although, I did see a small article of the President implementing a new way to reward schools based on the way they perform. I think it said that they would give more money to the top performing schools. This is all I know or heard about in the State of the Union address.

If I was given the chance to address the people of the U.S., I don’t know what I would say because I am not very interested in politics even though I know that it affects me a lot. I don’t really know what is going on regarding all of the good and bad things happening to our country.

I watch President Obama State of the Union Address briefly and it got me I did understand some it because he talked about how some of the most pressing issues in America today from improving education to increasing healthcare in america for those who can’t really afford it if I were given the opportunity I would tell the amercian people that we need to step up provide for the public school system for education period because that is whats suffering the most we should be putting more funding for education because because it needs more than what it has right now and that every kid that goes to public school should a least have an opportunity to have the best for themselves .

The State of the Union address last night was the first one I had heard. I was reluctant to actually listen to it, but I had. Listening to him was aspiring- he actually cares for his people and the community, which is a plus in my book.

I remember him talking about how people who served duty should not be discriminated and ostracized by who they love, and everyone clapped, except for the higher ups in the defense uniforms.

If I were to give my own speech, I guess I would tell the people about how Oakland needs some major work on roads, and community colleges are great and should get more benefits. Also, maybe I would talk about my people and other immigrant families that made a living here in the U.S.

Listening to my first State of the Union was a unique experience. The president pointed pit a lot of important points such as health care and the current budget crisis. He made big promises about improving the schooling and implementing the “leaving no child behind” program. His speech would have been nice if it hadn’t felt like he was just telling me what I wanted to hear.

I felt if the president was serious about making this work he should have given more examples of just “how” he was going to change things instead of “what he wants to do”. His ideas sound great but the way hes’ going to make it work is going to suck. More taxes, cut wages and more debt does not sound like the right answer.

If I was given a chance to tell the American people how I would change things, it would go along the lines of fixing the economy. It would involve steering away from socialist reforms and going more towards capitalist ideals. The American people would listen to how I would make changes with taxation and new budgeting plans. I would start to encourage hard work and an entrepreneur’s attitude as the basis for getting us out of debt. I would reinforce the idea that hard work and striving towards your dream will drive us out of this debt.

I have lived here in America for over 15 years but this is my first time listening to the State of the Union Address speech. I was never pay attention or interesting in politics. Fortunately, this class assignment gives me the opportunity to make myself listening to something I thought I would never like it.
I would like to discuss about the three areas the president had addressing in his speech. The first one is education. I want reboot the education policy by adding 100000 more teachers in math, science, technology and engineer subject of specialty. The second key he addressed was about the clean energy. He said he will send a big budget to the Congress to invest in biomedical and information technology laboratories. He hope with this investment in education and reserch, America will lead the world again in economic by not only creating more jobs but also beaten other nations in wellness. The last key that I think is very important is freezing the goverment spending in the next five years. He said by doing so, our nation will save more than $400 billion in the next decade by eliminating earnmarks(???) from spending bills and reforming tax code. "This freeze will require painfulcuts," Obama said in this speech.
So, to save our nation from having more debt or to lower the deficit, what exactly he will do to accimplish that task? what are to cuts?
Lastly, I do enjoy watching the speech. I think I will continue to watch it next year as a way to show some caring for the country i live and love.

I didn’t watch Obama’s State of the Union Address but I was listening to it. I found some of it interesting but some of the last part I wasn’t so interested in. I like that Obama has good intentions but it seems like senators or the government is against him in some things. The speech was too long I fell asleep on the last part. (smile)

If I was to address the American people I wouldn’t know what to say because I am not interested in those types of things. I don’t watch the news even though I know I should because it affects all of us.

It was very interesting because he talked about different issues that are happening in the world. He wants to continue with helping immigrants get legal so they can have a better life in the U.S. he was also talking about how in the future there will be electronic cars and other things. They were wearing ribbons and they clapped for a long time when they were talking about the military.
Obama wants to help out students continue with their education by giving more money. Also the students that are illegal he wants to find a way to help them. He talks about real issues that should not be ignored because it is real things that people are going through. The incident that happened in Arizona was very sad and things like that should not be happening because people don’t feel safe. Probably a lot of people would not want to go to Arizona because of what happened.
I would tell the American people that things would get better with time. We all have to work together to make it a better country for us to live in. The people that have the most money should be paying more taxes and the people that live pay check to pay check should not. There should be more jobs so that people are not in the street stealing other people’s belongings. If everyone had the same amount of money there would not be as many crimes and the world would be a better.

Although I only caught the end of President Obama’s speech, from what I did catch touched some important issues. I loved how he first of all represented how we as Americans are supposed to be as one. He did this by not segregating the different divisions of government, everyone sat together as one. I also admired how he gave hope to America, he pointed out indivisuals who came from nothing who are now successful. Some who are even now in office which proves you can be anything you put your mind to. Unfortunately I did not get to hear the plans Obama has for our country. But we have to work as one nation to be able to achieve great things. President Obama truly represents that.

If I was given the opprutunity to speak to the American people I would start off with the issues of healthcare. I could never understand how America is “the land of opprutunity”, where everybody wants to be and we have issues with healthcare. We as a nation cant do anything if we don’t have our health. I would also talk about how ridiculous it is that we continue to take away from our childrens education. Education is key and the children are our future. Without good education we have no future.

The list goes on of what I would want to tell the American people, I pray that God leads Obama in the way that he should go. We need change in America and we need it now.

Free write: My Address to the Nation
President Barack Obama’s address to the nation was in my opinion more of a pledge to the American people of (with our help) what he plans to do to fix some of the problems that most Americans are facing right now in our country. I saw that the President had a clear knowledge of the main key issues and concerns of the American people today. Like stopping the usage of fossil fuel immediately and paving the way so that by 2015 or 2050 Americans everywhere will be driving the electric cars.
Both of the important promises that our President made to us will help to ensure that America tomorrow will cleaner and doing things that are helpful and not harmful to the environment than what it is today. Watching the Presidents address last night I felt very proud that I voted and that he was elected because for the first time I felt like my vote really dose matter and that I helped to change history. I felt that President Obama was very sincere in his words and that he actually believed in what he was saying, and not just trying to say what he thought the American people wanted to hear.
So to answer the question what would I say or tell to the American people I think that I would say that My name is Krystle Martin and I am proud to be an American because I helped to elect a President into office who I believe who is an inspiration to me and all of my family and friends. And that Im trying to be the very best at everything that I do in this life that God gave me.

According to the responses, i agreed alot with Kandace Chao and Deshawn Smith because both of them stated real good facts for both the school system and working alot on oakland to. It really didn't change my conclusion much because i said the same thing as well about fixing our school systems and working on oakland to.

If i had an opportunity to address something important or special to american people, i think it would have to be some of the topics that Obama mentioned in his speech because he covered alot and went over most things that people was concerned or questioning about.Especially the part with school tuition, tax payers, and also taxing rich people as well. All these were interesting to me because they're things that needed to be brought out to our attention and things that shouldn't be hidden. But if i actually had a chance to speak out to the public it would be more about school, jobs, and health care.

I really dint get chance to see the President Obama state of the Union Address breifly but If I am given an opportunity to address the state of the Union last night, I would tell the American people about the economy and educaton system of the United States, opportunities and its benefits and strategies to upheal the US economy.
As everybody knows that the US economy is not good at this present situation. Most of the people are unemployed because most of the products are made in foreign countries. Most of the manufacturing industries has shut down their business because of recession. Rather than investing millions and trillions dollars to the foreign countries like China,Japan, India, Thailand etc for the produts, we should create and launch the business where we can make our own products and export to the other foreign countries to raise the economy and job level. Government of the US is investing a lot in the education for the betterment of the education system but even if the government is trying their level best lots of class has been cut out which not only put the job of the many teachers but it effect the lots of life of struggling students because of bugets cuts. Most of the schools cut their classes which ultimately going to affect on the future of the students that effects the future of the nation. I don’t think this is the way to upheal the current economy of the US bu the best strategies to upheal the US economy is I think the governemt of the US should launch the small businesses in different part of the US which helps the people to get the job easily and explore their skills which not only help to develop their efficieny and creativity but also help to push the nation towards the success.
Conclusively, the main focal point of the governemt of US should be on uphealing the economy by launching small sorts of business and creating the jobs, education system providing the sound environment for students to accelerate their talents with the easy exccess of education rather than cutting classes and ruining their future.

I liked the president's speech: his delivery and passion, also how consistent he has been from campaign to the White House on his values and principles. I didn't neccessarily agree with everything he said, especially the close juxtaposition of war to peace (smile). I also didn't hear any concrete solutions, but certainly the speech showed us a future that is optimistic if all concerned think outside of their narrow personal interests.

I felt kind of ashamed when I listened to commentary on Pacifica after the broadcast, highly critical comments on what the president left unsaid, but I like Obama, and he inherited a nation that is divided along lopsided lines and as he tries to strike a balance those with much do not want to let go of their riches. If I were president I would not be as patient with the opposition. I'd pull executive privilege when I ran into opposition to initiatives I felt really strongly about like taxing the rich and taking case of the elderly and making sure we have an educated citizenry.

I don't know if I have ever heard him mention the increasing number of youth being incarcerated for life. I hope the budget cuts he mentioned do not take the heads of those most vulnerable. Already thousands of youth in California are homeless and with California like many other states with a deficit, where is the money going to come from to build shelters?

We have a health care for all now, but what about the clinics that are closing here in California? Where is California going to get its money to build roads and that bullet train the president mentioned? One students said this morning that from his examples, the president is looking to small business, entrepreneurs to develop industries that address problems and needs of society and that government will support these innovative ventures.

Someone once told me that governments are never bankrupt. I don't know how one can spend money he or she doesn't have, yet America has done so, California has done so.

When my bank account is on zero, that's it. I wish I had a money garden (smile).

The 2011 State of the Union address took place at 6pm on January 25, 2011. I was assigned to watch, yet I didn't have time to do so. I did have time the next morning while getting dressed, I did more listening then anything thanks to Youtube (I love technology). The night before, I made an attempt to read the whole speech and took a few notes for class the next morning.

In class we were given the assignment to write what it is that we, as individuals, would say to the American people in the State of the Union address. I pondered this idea for a moment and then I came to the conclusion that I have no real clue as into what i would say. Mainly because, I am not really into politics and government as others might be. I don't really keep up with the news because I feel it is a bit depressing and that effects my spirit in a negative way.

Yet, if I had to say something it would probably go along the lines of informing the people that I am one person and Im not God. Things cant just change over night. Also that only one issues at a time can be addressed and me and my team are doing our best to cross all "T's" and dot all "I's" to insures that the American people are being taken care of.

Sidenote:
What should go into the State of the Union speech? What issues or ideas should be conveyed in that speech?

Thanks&Be Blessed,
Thailea B.

Although i did not get a chance to watch the President Obama’s State of the Union address last night due to the confusion of what time it came on, I did however read the actual speech online and i understood a lot of President Obama's thoughts and future plans for American's. He addressed a lot of topics such as The Medicare health bill, Education, Clean energy resources for the future, And new job idea's. And just to be clear, This was my first time reading the President's State Of The Union Speech. So I did not know what to expect exactly. I found it to be very enlightening and sort of a sigh breath of relief when i read President Obama's future plans. There are some people that disagree with what President Obama said or did not say. Many critics stated that President Obama did not cover a lot of material. One of my favorite parts of the entire speech
was when the president stated that one of his future goals for America is that he wants 80% of Americans to live off of clean energy sources.

If i was given the opportunity to give my own State Of The Union Speech to the citizens of America, I would propose a bill that guarantees that all of our senior citizens will be safe and secure and can retire happily. But thats just what i might propose.

I Enjoyed the State of the Union Address that Obama delivered on Tuesday night.
I felt that he addressed some very important issues, for instance he said he plans to have U.S troops out of Iraq by July. Obama wants to improve education also and he proposed this plan called Race to the Top, Obama wants to implement this program in replacement of the No Child Left Behind program. This plan is encouraging states to come up with their own education plan, if the plan is successful the state gets money and other states will be encouraged to adopt it. Obama is trying to push the switch to green energy too. Obama wants to use water and solar power as a means of alternative energy.

If I were to give a State of the Union speech I would address issues like unemployment and come up with solutions to create more jobs. I felt that in Obama’s address he didn’t touch on this issue. I would also address issues like over crowding in schools and prisons and attempt to find solutions for these issues. This is another issue Obama didn’t talk about. I would also address the U.S’ homeless problems currently there are 650,000 homeless people in the U.S., I feel Obama needed to look at more social issues.

I watched the state of the union address and it spoke to me when he talked to me about investing in American innovation. He focused on the economy and was thinking about making more jobs for people. I liked how he wanted to invest money in clean energy resource because our planet is suffering from global warming.

I also liked how he made a huge emphasis on the importance of education. He said that in this world and economy it is so important to have a higher education or a college degree to get by. His goal was to make the United States the top nation for the most college graduates. Hopefully he can make college affordable for everyone in the future.

I do not know anything about politics and how it works but if I was given the chance to address the people of the United States I would promise them better education for kids to get them ready to college and to stop the war in Iraq.

Though I did not watch the State of the Union that President Obama adressed to our nation on January 23, 2011. I do infact have my own visualization of how I would adress it, and help upbring my nation's patriotism. Stating the very fact that our country is in a very harsh recession and that the majority of the classes are having trouble paying bills, financing for schools has been decreased and cuts have taken place within education. Cuts such as these are not acceptable and shall be no longer seen as drastically as they have been in recent years. Our Teachers are vital to our country's development and well being preparing our young ones for the future and supplying them with the right tools to pursue a college career is necessary for this country. Jobs are scarce and will always be hard to supply, but I promise to return to our F.D.R times and provide an even better stimulation such as the New Deal to amelliorate our situation and fix our job scarcity.
Have faith my fellow Americans for the storm will pass and our times of joy will return, plans and preparements for the future is what I promise and state in this state of union.

If given the oppertunity to address the American people in a State Of The Union Address, I would talk about how to get the americans out of debt which Presidnt Obama did. Create a world where it's more equal to both Democrats, Republicans and where no race is superior to the other.

I'm not very interested in politics, except for some interesting topics like global warming, or when the next time gas prices are going to sky rocket. Obama speech was very interesting in some topics, but others weren't.

I found President Obama's State of the Union address speech interesting. The union address covered some points that I had on my mind for a while. Over time I know that changes will be made just like Obama had stated. Improving education and health care is one of the most pressing topics to me because people need education an also health care.

If I was given the opportunity to address our fellow americans, I would tell them that we would have to work to together to pin point all the problems that we feel need to be addressed. With them being able to understand that they will see that if we work together an not just complain about things needing to be done we will make a change in the world. I would also say that as america we need more patients and to strive to make changes.

The State of Union Address is what we should have a right education that we deserve in order to get better jobs and government should increase tax of rich people. The low income people people would have better benefits. They should cut so many foreclosures of housing. They should decrease the layoffs and give budgets for jobs. The government should do changes to control the budget deficit for their spending over the year.

I think I would tell to the American people how we can be together if we can change the role of the government. We can improve the economy by enhancing the job employment and collecting taxes for the government funds. It should be better to use the funds to people who are indeed in need. This action is possible to control government action toward spending too much money on many things.

Response to the State of the Union Address 2011 by President Obama

The problem facing our immediate society in America is our country’s economy and finical situation. Without a stable functioning economy, people do not eat and life hardens. President Obama hopes to respond to the deficit in the fashion of the common American family by working everyday to live within their means. If we, as a people, must balance, we deserve a government who too lives within these rules. In politics, this will mean suspending Annual Domestic Spending for five years (12% of the budget). He gives examples of sacrifice all over the federal government while employees and the military experience a freeze on their income. But, of course, President Obama is mindful to emphasize that though frugal is the name, it will not be the game. We cannot cut back on the backs of the country’s most vulnerable, says the President, nor from the great investments we’ve made for our future.
The larger issue inherited from times and progress before today’s, which has both bettered and complicated civilized life, comes to the fierce job competition. President Obama glorifies the American legacy of innovation, and stresses the need to “win the future” in the technological race against those who are also our competitor in the economic world markets, China. Both the generations of the past, and the young of today are faced with a great challenge. (This was embarrassingly referred to as our “Sputnik moment” in the speech, and ran over several times in the papers). Thus, education is paramount. No, there no longer exist paying work-labor jobs with a promising future as the past had provided. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are our focus, if our focus is to “win the future”.
But, the back of the recession has broken and we are seeing incentives and opportunity for new small business, and a federal focus, if only in word alone, on caring for that growth. Our union has hope in the ‘Mom and Pop shop’, in the community schooling single mother, in the students who are extendedly protected by their parents’ health insurance plans. Trade talks all around the globe will make it possible for our exports to continue to create more revenue for the American people. An American people, Obama states, that needs to solve its internal issue of Illegal Immigration once and for all. If we retain the immigrants we educated, our nation could be that much better.
Obama, though a sweet toned gentlemen, did not speak to an audience existing in this country. To his peers, he either coaxed their already-held beliefs, or politely infuriated those opposed him. His nice and eloquent way of plainly stating that his opinions were firm and reforms immortal seemed hostile. The invitation for suggestion, exclusively for tweaks, to improvement on already in-place movements were readily heard struck odd as well, no doubt intention was earnest. He seemed to be addressing the outcome of the 112th Congress, and indirectly standing firm to the new change and asserting his voice, thought, and power. As an American person, the emotional appeals President Obama used to make the public feel connected, cared for, and unique poured through the name dropped stories of situational struggles through these past couple years.
Overall, the State of the Union is hopeful. Through logical deduction of the value of the internet and computer age, we as Americans can, as we naturally should, “out innovate, out educate and our build the world” -once again!

Throughout the entire State of the Union Address, given by our current President Barack Obama, I felt as if every little detail of what living in America nowadays was surely included. This year was my first time watching this speech and I am sure I will watch it every year from now on. Even though I wasn’t able to directly relate to every bit and part of the speech, I really did feel as if every American resident was included and they saw how the President brought up their current situation at one point or another. It’s clear that Obama is really trying to help this nation get back to where it should be from an economical and political standpoint. He also knows and believes, while assuring us and giving us hope that as the strongest nation we are capable of change for the better. From addressing the major to minor issues that need much improvement, which cannot be done by just one man whom is our president, he constantly reminds us that we must unite and work together in order to see and get the results we’ve been deprived of these past years.

What appealed to me the most is when he spoke about community colleges, visiting El Salvador in the near future and improving health care benefits for young adults so they can stay on their parent’s coverage even longer. President Obama is a great man with high power and status, but for once made me feel that he cares about the people who don’t have a big enough voice in politics. I actually felt included and that encourages me to get more involved in politics and that every vote does actually count. I feel bad for the people who choose to ignore our current political situation because it can and will impact our everyday living situation.

If I were given the opportunity to speak to the American people I would surely want Barack Obama to help me with the speech because I didn’t feel he could say any less or more. But during an economical downfall that we are currently in I would just assure the people of this nation that we must unite and strive for a better tomorrow. We can only take life one day at a time, but to remember there is no time to waste.

Hello there Matt Conevaro. I read your response to the State of the Union Address and although the speech did sound good, I do agree with you that it all just sounded too good and President Obama could have gave more detail of how he plans to help this nation. Doesn’t it seem as if he just gave us a long list of what changes need to be made but no exact example of which direction is going to be actually taken. I guess we can just hope that action will actually take place and not just talk.

This comment is in response to Dominique Jasper-Fields, hello there. I can see why not everything in the speech would seem interesting to all because not everything that was talked about we can actually relate to. But with politics I feel like if we don’t at least try to become involved or interested in other topics than we can never complain as a nation of how bad things are because we never even tried to work as a nation to improve anything. I guess we can just hope for the best and that this debt that we are in will get better in time.
