Paraphrase:
Some young women bride were punished, killed, or burned by their husband in India because the husband cannot sustain his bride’s family and choose to remarry to another younger woman.

Four girls including Rath had decided that they would rather risk there life than to stay in the brothel. She couldn't look down and the bench was very rickety also. The girls thought that even if they did stay at the brothel, They would end up dying anyway.
