Cyber-Assignment

Today we worked on revising essays, the Half the Sky essays. Homework is to complete the revisions and turn them in electronically with the correction essay or narrative (students have their instructions) by Wednesday, start of class.

We will complete the SPHE Essay Exam 2 or Possessives, for those who have not. for those who have, we will complete the Parallel Structure essay. We will also complete another peer review on the Book Report essay.

Students who turned their HTS in late and those who are on their third revision have to do the correction essay as well. Everything is due Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

We watched Revision Strategies. Students are to post a reflection on what they learned about revision from the film that he or she didn't know before. Also, students are to note what aspects of the revision process were reinforced, that is, the student just needed a reminder of a skill he or she might have stopped using.

Students should not be making any MLA errors in the in-text citations or works cited. There is no excuse for an essay with mi spelled words or any of the errors we have covered in SPHE.

The idea behind Pidd is that students can catch and correct their errors because they have learned to identify errors in Pidd essays.

After watching the Revision Strategies film it made me feel more comfortable of the fact that when I write an essay, then revise it, that it’s okay if it’s not a well written paper the first or second etc. time around. Revision is a strategy that can bring positive improvements to not only an essay but also improving the skills of a writer. They mentioned in the film, “perfect draft syndrome” where a writer concentrates too much on writing the first sentence and thinking they can just write the whole essay all the way through without brainstorming. I can’t deny that I haven’t attempted that before and if you don’t brainstorm and write out an outline, then you will be unsuccessful when it comes to the overall writing process. It also made me very aware that this is a process that requires thinking, planning, and figuring out what you want the essay to be about. I use to not pay much attention of who my audience would be, but when filling out an initial planning sheet and reviewing my notes from this film, it has made me more conscious of who my paper will be addressing.
Four key points that they shared with us when revising an essay, that has helped me in several ways and I would like to remind the class of them are:
1. look at the overall paper
2. look at the paper’s organization
3. examine each of the paragraphs
4. focus on the sentences and words, do they flow together?
