Cyber-Freewrite and Class Recap

Post your freewrite here, a response to Tupac's poem: "In the Depths of Solitude, Dedicated 2 Me" (5).

Students were to reflect on the poem in light of what Dyson reveals in "Childhood Chains" and find a citation from Dyson that supports your conclusion re: the poem. Find something Dyson writes that agrees with what you have stated in your freewrite and incorporate it into your work.

Don't forget to include page numbers for the citations (Dyson and Tupac).

Homework is to keep reading Dyson and to keep doing the exercises in Pidd. We reviewed and spoke about Essay 1, which is due today. The peer review and proofreading sheets were due in class by today. If you missed this step, and have spoken to me I will take it tomorrow.

I saw students today who are clearly lost. We are in the next section of Dyson. "Childhood Chains" is last week's reading (smile). I gave students copies of "Childhood Chains" but I don't have copies of the next section.

I am in my office now, D-219. I have a key. My office hours are MW 9-10:50 and after 12 noon by appointment, and TTh after 3:30 by appointment as well.

In the afternoon class, students didn't know that they were to continue in Pidd. Pidd is on-going, through all the books and projects and other activities we will be writing correction essays for the student named Stewart Pidd.

I let the afternoon class out early again by mistake. There are two students who leave early and this throws me off. The class is almost two hours long. I had a lot more to cover and so the three students who were left were able to ask questions and one student and I went over all the templates. It was fun.

The students who are leaving early, again, I don't know how you got into my class when your schedule overlaps. Sit in the back and leave quietly--I am sure this is against the academic policy. I'll get back to you on this.

I was tempted to drop you this afternoon, especially when the entire class thought I wanted to dismiss the class early, so no one said anything again. Now I know why I got confused last week and this week--your early departure is distracting.

The afternoon class asked me to remind them of due dates for assignments; I think people asked me to write the assignments on the board. I will remind you, but the way I remember is to look at the assignment sheet (smile). There were a couple of assignments in the syllabus we missed. I might make them extra credit(smile).

Put the writing assignments in the datebook the college gives students at the start of each academic year.

I have given them all to you already.

In the poem" In the Depths of Solitude Dedicate 2 Me" Tupac seem to have a sense of isolation when he states, "How can I be in the depths of solitude when there are two inside of me". Dyson also covers the theme of isolation , solitude and loneliness in the chapter Dear Mama. He quotes" ...a stance that captured domestic alienation of millions of other black youth in his song "Me Against the World."

In the poem" In the Depths of Solitude Dedicate 2 Me" Tupac talks about being lonely. The lines that stood out to me were "trying to find peace of mind and still preserve my soul constantly yearning to be accepted". That really stands out a lot because it’s the same problem that I had with in myself because I felt like I was in solitude for so long. In the book Holler If you hear me Dyson says “we have a deep love for out mothers, because they usually raised us by themselves”(p.22).That shows that Dyson agrees wit the poem because he was always by himself with his mom barley being there and his dad being absent in his life. Solitude means in a state on confinement and that shows that tupac really was and felt lonely.

In the poem “In the Depths of Solitude Dedicate 2 Me” Tupac talks about how his isolation and loneliness reflects on him. His isolation states the line, “How can I be in the depths of solitude when there R 2 inside of me.” In Dyson, it shows the loneliness and isolation in the chapter Dear Mama, when Tupac said, “Mother’s Day is a genuine holy day for African Americans, a time when otherwise stoic men break into song or tears recalling the nurturing love of their maternal root.”(pg.22) It is telling that he is missing his mother and his family with his loneliness and his isolation.

In the poem "In the Depths of Solitude Dedicated 2 me", Tupac talks about the struggles he had while trying to be successful. One successful line or a line that stood out to me, "I exist in death of silence while proving my main goal". In 'Holler if You Hear Me', Dyson does talk about Tupac's stuggles which then made him the way he is and/or made him stronger. Dyson describes the abandonment of Tupac's mother while she did drugs, "It was an abandonment that deeply affected Tupac, spurring him to create brilliant art and to cry out for attention with his own brand of chaotic, self destructive behavior," (Dyson, 40). This shows how being neglected gave Tupac a sense of reality and how he wanted the world to change not only for himself but for every other child whether they are poor, black, brown, etc. If young people are not neglected, then they will have more of a good effect than a bad one.

Today in class we read,”In The Depths Of Solitude Dedicated 2 Me.” In this free write I would like to discuss what was said in both the Depths and in Rose as well. In the Depths of solitude, Tupac says, “A young heart with and old soul. How can there be peace?” In ”The Rose That Grew From The Grave,” Dyson supports this quote on page 30. Dyson says , ”When Afeni became pregnant, she hoped that her sister would raise her child, since she and her comrades faced 352 years in prison.” This quote from Dyson tells me that Tupac was faced to raise himself practically and grow up on his own with little help. Tupac grew up with a young heart and a tough street soul.

In the poem "In the Depths of Solitude Dedicated 2 me" Tupac feels isolated. The lines that stood out to me were "A young heart with an old soul how can there be peace" In Holler if you hear me, Dyson talks about how Tupac felt alone when he"...could no longer pretend school to fit his view of the world."(p.85) When Tupac moved from New York to California, he saw the violence that was going on and he wanted to stop it. He wanted to make a diffence in the world.

In class today we listen to the poem "In the depths of solitude dedicated 2 me". In this poem Tupac seems depressed and can not reach his goal. In spite of his depressing, he still have a strong will to reach his goal.Dyson describes the abandonment of Tupac's mother while she did drugs, "It was an abandonment that deeply affected Tupac, spurring him to create brilliant art and to cry out for attention with his own brand of chaotic, self destructive behavior," (Dyson, 40). The line"A young heart with an old soul" seems powerful line because he know that he is young but he telling that he have an old soul and you can't evaluated him with his age.

In the poem, “In the Depths of Solitude”, Tupac Shakur speaks about finding himself and living his life peacefully. But he has to do all of this alone, in his own solitude. There is nobody to guide him and he shows feelings of sorrow throughout this poem. Dyson sort of opens up this topic by bringing up Tupac’s mother and how she just left him for drugs. His mother and his relationship was a whirlwind. It was always changing from good to bad to worse, and then back to good. Proof of this is when Dyson writes “No one emblematizes this truth more than Tupac Shakur, whose relationship to his mother, Afeni Shakur, was as devoted as it was turbulent.” Tupac just feels isolated and doesn’t know what step to take next in his life.

The poem "in the depths of solitude" uses duality within the individual of Tupac having "two of him inside of himself" a double sided personality. this is reflected in our own lives in the fact that we all have different personalities of ourselves. this is shown in Dyson via the chapter the chapter dear mama with the running out of the klan.

14 September 2011 The Depth of Solitude
This poem is one of many written my Tupac Shakur called The Depth of Solitude, has two mean points or themes are: solitude as expressed in the tiered line “ trying to find peace of mind”. This shows what he is trying to obtain wile in solitude, peace. Another theme if you will is stated in line nine when he says “ a young heart with an old soul.” And line twelve when he says “when, there R 2 inside of me” these lines are echoed in Dyson’s book holler if you hear me on page 28-29, when he is talking about how in one of 2pac’s late songs “Me against the world”. He expressed his, and the feelings of millions of others coming from fractured home life’s, feelings of aloneness and alienation. Another spot in this book witch echo’s these points are on page 44 when Dyson is discussing 2pac’s relationship with his mother and how Tupac forgives her for her drug addiction and her domestic inconstancy. This shows somewhat of a battle between the 2 inside of him, the onside that wants two forgive and forget and the cut-throat person he was bread two be.

The poem “in the depths of solitude, dedicated to me” expresses the author’s loneliness and his isolation of regret. He says, “I exist in the depths of solitude pondering my true goal trying to find my peace of mind/ and still preserve my soul” (pg.5)Tupac goes through all these painful emotions as he walks forward to his goals.

In the poem "In the Depths of Solitude Dedicated 2 Me", Tupac expresses his stuggle to be accepted and belonging. He says,"Trying 2 find peace of mind and still preserve my soul/CONSTANTLY yearning 2 be accepted"(5). Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D., author agrees. In his treatise on Shakur he writes, "She (Afeni) feels that Tupac spurned the light and clung willfully to his own darkness later in life because he didn't believe that "people who were in the light would... embrace him"(Dyson 44). I do believe that no matter how he triedto be accepted, he still feel rejected because of the pain he had from his mother. The total abandonment and the lack of nurtuting as a child got him so bitter and have no sense of belonging.

In the poem "In the Depths of Solitude Dedicated 2 me" Tupac explains to me as a reader, his feelings of himself in this world. He states "constantly yearning to be accepted and from all receive respect". I feel as though he feels out of place in his life. Him being a young black man he is not given respect it has to be earned. Where as a white man would be respected for being white no matter there position in life.

In the poem "In the Depths of Solitude" Tupac explains to me as a reader, his feeling in this world. He states "constantly yearning to be accepted and from all receive respect". Tupac is a young black man in America who is not given respect. A white man is given respect no matter his position in life he will always be "better than" the next man, because white men created the system to serve white people. I can relate to Tupac because I was once in a class full of white people, me being the only black student, and I felt out of place. The students did not welcome me as they would at a school where more black students attended. Acceptance is something you have to teach yourself to feel even when you do not feel as if you belong.

In the poem “In the Depths of Solitude Dedicate 2 Me” I loved the line I have a young heart with a old soul. He is basically saying he feels out of place. 2pac is feeling like he is wiser than the rest of them because he wint through a lot with his mother. Dyson talks about this in Dar momma. He says about the time she had him in prison. Then he would grow up to feel unexcepted because of being a young black man. He writes so beautiful and speaks from the heart that is what i love about him.

while reading a poem in "A Rose that Grew from Concret," a little more depth Salitude being the poem I read. Tupac got real detailed with his intuitions of experiencing loneliness. Something that support Tupac's loneliness for instance, In the novel, "Holler if You Hear" Michael Eric Dyson analyzed the life tupac was living. Tupac was alone and lost in the world at a young age, while, his mother was addicted to drugs. Mr. Dyson really exaimed Tupac's life that eventually reveal his suffer from loneliness. Another example is the novel, Tupac only friend was Jada Pickett Smith. Also, Tupac really didnt agree with the Black Panthers philosophies so the treatment of society so violently, indicating Tupac really did not bond or click as much with the members of the organization. Moreover, Afeni Shukur, Tupac's mother aslo, suffered from loneliness, for instance, The Black Panther Organization did not reach out towards of the needs of Afeni.

In the poem " In the Depths of Solitude Dedicated 2 me" Tupac feels like he is alone in this world due to his maturity and confusion. I feel that Tupac isn't found himself as an individual but is actually fighting against the good and the bad in himself. Thiers a confusion about his life and what his perception is , and who he wants to be. The acceptance of his values and the reality environment are clashing together which is causing him loneliness because I feel like he hasn't found anyone close to him that can relate to his feelings. In this line" the Duo within me cause the perfect opportunity, 2 learn twice as fast as those who accept simplicity."In the entire poem it it shows me he going through an oxymoron confusion between the things he wants in life. From Holler If You Hear Me" Dyson make my conclusion valid by saying "Tupac's maturity allows him to value his mother's love even as her affliction" which i think connects to me point. He accepts her affliction and expresses her internal feelings about her as he does when he is making music for the youth going contradicting himself at times through his music. He is caught between the life he thinks is right and the maturity that is taking over and opening his eyes to the right path to take.

In the Depths of Solitude
In the book of poetry from The Rose that grew from Concrete Shakur inner thoughts are reveal on pg. 5 title In the Depths of Solitude’ Trying 2 find peace of mind and still preserve my soul”. This in fact was Shakur deep profound intellect of trying to figure you out without external noises. Knowing who and where you stood in your convictions and knowing who you are and for the most part I think he did especially coming from a young person that he was. Perhaps it was a Ghandi like moment that he needed to find tranquility and peace that maybe from the resentment he experience from his lack of parents existence or lack of. From Holler if you hear me perhaps in solitude Shakur’s revelation was “He expressed gratitude for Afeni’s heroic persistence in the face of both her self- destruction and the obstacles thrown in her way by a callous society”. He saw and reflects his mom’s true honesty and realness and that is what he look and admired, conceivably.
