Library Orientation

Reflect on your library orientation today with Professor Steve Gerstle (ENG 201 8-8:50 AM). What did you learn about libraries that you were not aware of before? What are you looking forward to most when you visit the library at COA or in the community next? Why is information literary important? Why is the free library system one of the most underutilized resources in American today, and by extension on college campuses?

Visit the COA library website and Professor Gerstle's webpage. Send him a note of thanks for the tour today (smile). Comment on his web page. Visit http://alameda.peralta.edu/homex.asp?Q=Homepage (Look for the library website there).

If you get a response, let us know. You can send him this post. Click on the envelop at the end of the link.

I appreciate the library tour. I have visited many library and always enjoy the free materials or information that I get or borrow.  I noticed that library has different format and programs that one can avail. I am most impressed in COA that it has the writing skill lab department and math lab department for any student to use whenever one needs help. It is just unfortunate that due to budget cut a lot of it's department are close in specific time which includes the media department.

I was surprised on how much information that College of Alameda had. I’ve never noticed that there were writing and mathematics labs, that students can come whenever they want to and get help with their studies. Whenever, I have troubles with those two subjects now I know where to exactly go. The information literacy is important, because of resources like the internet, finding high-quality information is now harder and the good information’s that you are looking for is not on the internet, but some are in a book or a news article. Ever since the budget cuts though out many districts in California, there have been a lot of programs at schools that have been canceled and leaving the parents and the local’s unhappy.

The library at College of Alameda is a very useful place for students who need to find resources and a place where they can have peace and quiet to focus on their studies. I learned some new things about the library from the tour we had today. It has many areas that have been shut down because of budget cuts. Many libraries are suffering lately because people say they don't have the time to just sit down and read a book. And many books now are found online for free. There are things like the amazon kindle that has the ability to electronically download any book.

Thank you for the library tour. I always thought the CSU's and UC's will provide some kind of help, but i learned that we don't have that luxury. Knowing this information i will use the resources available to me now to my full advantage to get out i can get out of while i'm in the college of Alameda.

Library Reflection

First off, I just want to say that the paper is the best resource to have in the library because I think ill get lost without it. I learned that the library has so many helpful ways to be successful at College Of Alameda. It gives you a place to get ahead with a quiet study place, lots of knowledge from books, and a place for you to get valuable group time on campus. I was shocked about how much material was actually in the library. Im looking forward to checking out books that interest me to obtain knowledge on that subject without going out of my way to check out a book from a public library. I think information literary is important because it allows the student to become more knowledgeable in that profession or subject.I think the free library system is underutilized because students don't know what is offered to them when they start attending college because they didn't take the time to go to orientation or because their too lazy to sign up. Also, I think that students nowadays have all the resources at home like computer which act like books because you can find a lot of information online. Society is turning into a virtual one ,with the computer being the most valued and reliable resource on the planet.

During the library orientation I learned that it offers a lot of different help for all types of classes. Also, the books are organized by classes and the level that you’re on. The thing that I’m looking forward to the most is being able to just go in the library and reserve my own study room. Information literary is important because it can help the students if we have any questions or if our professor wants us to type a paper, they can proof read it for us. I think the library isn’t being put to use like it should be because some people may not fully understand how the library operates.

Library Orientation

The library orientation was interesting. I learned how libraries have a lot of resources for students to succeed. I never seen the computers downstairs for research and a library class. When I go to the library at College of Alameda, I look forward to have a quiet place to study. The free library system resources are used underutilized because students are doing research and finding books on the internet.

Library Tour
During the College of Alameda I learned about the many resources the school had offered to the students at no extra cost. One of the things that not many Universities could offer as well as College of Alameda was help from the librarians. I was told that in universities, they don’t have as much time to personally help the students so you really on your own when it comes to the library, which I found to be really kind of the librarians at COA. I did not know that most of the United States shared the same system for organizing the books in the library nor did I know they where ordered by topic. The video and audio section really just got my by surprise because that was the last thing I expected them to have in the there. I think it is great that they have a math/science lab for the students, because those topics are really confusing sometimes and students sometimes need extra help to understand the topic or complete their homework. Since I am trying to major in business administration and/or nursing, I am certain that I will be visiting the lab a few times while attending COA. Also the study rooms seem pretty helpful for groups-get-togethers.

Library Orientation

The College of Alameda tour was useful and I wasn’t really aware of anything before coming into the College Of Alameda library because it was similar to the public library. I know the concept of what the library has and my visits at the community college library or the public library, will most likely going to be is the tutoring center, books, or studying. It really depends on the library system and how often people use the library. Since now there are many budget cuts and some of the areas are close. People now look at online or electronically read a book. The information literary is important in many cases and one of them is the resources. Library can be more than resources when other things can be unhelpful.

The song this is my testimony by Sebastian Chanting is so real and beautiful I love how in the entro he states “God brought me through it all”. He is talking ab out how he has struggled before with drugs, but he thanks God because now he is a new man. In verse one he talks about how he is scared when he does not feel God near. I feel the same way to as well. This is one of my favorite songs and I have only heard it twice.

In verse two he States: “I ain’t born with a silver spon in my mouth”. We are not born with a silver spoon in our mouth, but we are all going to have our trials. He is stating that he wants to follow Good and listen, and how he is proud to be a changed man.
In listening to this song it sums up how I feel and we don’t always have a bright and shiny day.
The poem from Tupac called *Tomorrow he writes: “But tomorrow I see achange a chance to build anew, built on spirit intent of heart and ideas based on truth”. This part of this poem fits with Sebastian’s song because he talks about having fa better tomorrow, and how the day were not always bright for him. This was Tupocs truthful prayer in a way how he looks not on the bad side but reflects that he will have a better tomorrow filled with truth.

-What did you learn about libraries that you were not aware of before?
I learned that the library has great study areas that are available for the students if needed, also that they have a very huge selection and verity of books. Before today I wasn’t aware that it had a research center, I would walk in and see the area revered where the computers are located down stairs but I never really knew what they were for.
-What are you looking forward to most when you visit the library at COA or in the community next?
When I do decide to visit the library at COA I normally go because I don’t have the book I may need to complete the assignment I was given or to use the free computer lab to print out a few things or even type up some things as well.
-Why is information literary important? Why is the free library system one of the most underutilized resources in American today, and by extension on college campuses?
Because most students over look it due to the fact that you can just about find anything on the web

Library Day
Today we met early in the library. I enjoyed the tour from the librarian, Professor Gerstle. The library has many things a student can take advantage as far as educating themselves. I look forward in using the students that donate their time for tutoring. The tutoring program sounds good, but sounds like there are some cutbacks due to funding for that. Literary is important because reading is a key to learning new subjects and material. Not a lot of students utilize the library but I think if they gave it a chance, then the would benefit greatly. I know I have

Library Orientation

I enjoyed going on a tour of our Library and getting better understanding of what there is to offer. I wasn't aware of how extensive, and accessible the Library database is. I like using the Library for a peaceful place to study and feel like I have tons of information at such a close reach. Professor Gerstle seemed to give us a very real idea of what's happening to the budgets and how that's changing how things can operate. Libraries are underutilized because people think that they can access all they need or valuable on the internet. It's crazy how there's talk about the extinction of printed paper books, but thats the only way you can actually hold the material.

I feel the library orientation was very helpful. he explained the library to us very well. he made everything very clear and made is easy for us to come back and use the lib ray with no troubles at all. i feel like i would get confused in a bigger library and this smaller library is much easier for me to understand.

Library Orientation at COA
With a brief walk through in the College of Alameda library with Professor Gerstle's eager academic persona that seek the rewards of higher learning and the student’s ambition to succeed, precariously guided a relatively small group, first in the ground floor and finishing the tour on the second floor. The second floor consist writing and mathematics labs that should be helpful but due to the state’s budget I was surprise by the available and limited staff on standby.
The library databases that lists the following; Infotrac-expanded academic, Ebscohost- Academic search elite provides a alternative research approach to locate articles, and information primarily only available at the library. Perhaps the reasons that the school library isn’t used as often is the impact of search engines like Google and Bing that made the convenience of online research more assessable from the comforts of your home and provides a freedom of privacy and safely from hostile weather, traffic, and people. At least coming to the library will make you focus and discipline when trying to study or getting homework done with mark off areas that demands the sign “QUIET PLEASE” which is located on the first floor. Either way the library is a great resource to be use by a great and helpful staff and the peaceful serenity of escaping your busy home fill with distractions like family, problems, and media.

Library Orientation

The library tour was great for me to remember some stuff I did not already know. The librarian did teach me about the different programs such as the tutoring program, the Writing center, and the Computer Lab. I have seen these classrooms all the time while attending the library but i did not really know what they were for. I appreciated the librarian for telling us what they were used for and how to access certain data in order to get into the program or be able to use the computer lab. Just like Chester, I already knew about the library. Looking for/checking out/ researching books is also difficult for me but I would not mind learning.
