Topical Invention

Post your sentences here: analogies, definition, consequence, testimony. Don't forget to start with the name of the poem and the theme you are referencing. If you want to open with a short summary of the central themes you can.

The questions are:

Definition: What is it/What was it?
Consequence: What caused it/Did it cause?
Analogy: What is it like or unlike?
Testimony: What does an authority say about it?

Note: October 13, 2011
When writing sentences using Topical Invention, include the word in the sentence.

Also, we are not looking at general definitions, rather connect everything to the world of "Evolution of a Revolutionary." The sentences evolve or revolve around the life of Afeni Shakur the protagonist of the story.

Some of the sentences are too general or off topic. They should tie in specifically to the text.

Remember, these sentences could be used as thesis sentences in an essay on the topic.

The poem "Sometimes I Cry" written by Tupac brings up themes of isolation, depression, martyrdom and self pity.

Depression is a force that encompasses a feeling of despair, hopelessness, uselessness, and a sense of being quarantined.

Certain circumstances in life such as trauma, death of a loved one, loss of a relationship or job can cause a person to withdraw from life and feel as if they've lost their identity. Without the skills to cope with life's challenges one can implode emotionally and mentally. "If I had an ear to confide in/I would cry among my treasured friend," states Tupac.

“I Cry”

In the poem “I Cry” the writer is trying to get the reader to understand his perspective: Tupac is writing about loneliness. Loneliness is a feeling of depress caused by being alone. The writer is saying that world is moving fast and life moves on. But there is no time for the world to stop the time and care what one is crying about, and thus that person is lonely. If someone struggles to make that close relationship with anyone in life and has that trouble then this can cause permanent depression and mental issues. “The world moves fast and it would rather pass by. Then to stop and see what makes one cry.” Quotes Tupac.

Topical Invention
The poem that I choose is Sometimes I Cry. The theme I got from this poem is loneliness.

Loneliness is like a big cold house. (As in it is big in presentence even though it has no mass and cold as in there is no warmth from affection as if no one cares.)

Loneliness is a self fulfilling prophecy, by claming you are lonely you make it true.

Loneliness only becomes more loneliness, you most break. The cycle and become not alone.)

“I cry because I’m on my own” this shows just how it sets in motion the cycle of loneliness

Topical inventions: evolution
Evolution is when something changes its form into something other form for better or worst. Evolution is like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, since it transforms from a worm like insect into something that can fly. Joining the Black Panthers was the first step Anfeni took in her evolution into a freedom fighter. Segregation and racism in her hometown of Lumerton, North Carolina, primed Afeni for her eventual evolutionary work.
