Abstract

The book I have chosen for my book report today is called Call of the Wild by Jack London. It is a story of anger, overcoming, learning your own respect, and becoming that of what you were meant to be. The key reasons for me choosing this book are, it was given to me as a kid when I first moved out of the country when I was ten and I never read it fully through. Also my child hood closely resembled this story. There are many different things that could be taken from this book by anyone how reads it I am sure. Through each person’s eyes there is sure to be some part of this book that hits home to all of use. Myself, I took the idea of making the most of your surroundings, overcoming the bully, and demanding the place you earned.

It Calls You Back
The book It Calls You Back written by Luis Rodriguez is the sequel to his bestseller Always Running. The book starts by him being in prison at the age of 18. While in prison he decided he was going to quit heroin and gangs. He was tired of that lifestyle that by that time already had killed 25 of his friends. He considered himself lucky to still be alive. He gets out and enrolls in college he then met a woman named Camila. She became his first wife and they had two kids. The marriage lasted four years. Luis was devastated. He married again but that did not last. He reunited with a woman he had met before they fell in love and married they had two boys. Luis was always active in Chicano programs and trying to help teens. He wanted to stop the violence that gangs create. He met a poet called Manzanares and is through him that Luis discovers his love for writing. He worked for several newspapers such as the East side sun; and the People’s tribune. He finally gets a break when a publisher agrees to publish his book Always Running. The book came out in 1993. It became a best seller soon he was touring the country presenting his book he appeared in shows such as Oprah, good morning America and others. But he says although he had a lot of struggles his biggest one was trying to get his oldest son Ramiro to get out of the gang life. His son had come out like Luis. Only that Ramiro did not want to change he had a lot of trouble with the law. At age 19 he was convicted on three counts of attempted murder and sentenced to 28 years in prison. He was released in 2010 after serving 13 and half years. Luis blames himself for his son’s fate. He believes that he neglected his children. Luis thinks he should have spent more time with his kids; Instead of writing or volunteering in programs. But none the less he was happier than ever when his son got out and Ramiro told him he was leaving the world of gangs behind. His son started writing like Luis.

Life repeats itself
Title: It Calls you back by Luis Rodriguez

I have chosen this book because I can relate to Luis struggles through poverty and the gang life. How he can change his ways from being a gang/drug addict to becoming a writer.

The theme is standing up to what you believe him and fighting for what's right. During his youth, Rodriguez was being pushed around by the school system and legal system because of several factors. He did not know English, he grew up in poverty, and he had a lot of confrontations with the LAPD. Now he is trying to change his life around as he gets older Raising his four kids and grandchild.

My topic for my book report is what can we do to change the youth perspective on the gang life like Luis Rodriguez?

The key points in the book report are following his struggle to stay away from drugs, renounce his former life, and searching for meaningful work in his life as a writer and poet.

Daddy Glen Abuses Bone

The title of the book is "bastard out of Carolina," and the author of this book is Dorothy Allison. I liked to write about this book to argue that abusing children is illegal.
Bone Anny Boatwrught is a little girl who was from her mother Anny Boatwright. But, her aunts and uncle call her Bone because she was very small when she was born. Bone did not know her father throughout her life.

Her mother got married to Daddy Glen while Bone was child. Glen promised to take care of Bone as his child when he got married to her mother. But, broke his promise after his marriage and abused her.

I choose the book Hearts and Hands written by Rodriguez, Luis J. After I finished the book Always Running, I got interested into his work to the society and found a book review of the book Hearts and Hands which was interesting. This book is about why troubled youth join gangs, what is a solution for that, and what kind of mindset that our society should have when we see these “bad kids.” Rodriguez asserts that the environments and our view must be changed to turn back bad kids into light of our society.
The most children in incarceration have common problems that they had suffered abuse from adults from early on in their age. Therefore, they run away from home and start to hang on the street to fulfill their neglected minds.
The reason for gangs formed is that they mostly are poor in the society like many of them, or their parents have low income jobs. They need a protection for themselves in the society to survive. Therefore they unite together and do businesses such as drug dealings or stealing
People have been treating troubled youth with contempt. This made that they cannot get along with proper environments which they need to be nurtured.
These problems are the major causes of gang producing environment. However, there is a powerful tool to change this. Rodriguez says that art can nurture bad kids and bail out them from the pit.
Gangs are the production of our society. We have been discriminating, blaming, and neglecting them from our society instead of giving them love, care, and help. Our society has rewarded only the children who are labeled as “good kids”. Because of this, “bad kids” are permanently stuck with an undesirable label and are denied places where they can be nurtured normally like other children. This needs to be mended. We, as individuals and as a society should pay more attention to troubled youths by supporting them artistically, so that they can find real value in their lives and make a rich future out of it.

Peace like a river by Leif Enger. I choose this book because of the way how he writes and describes the story and the theme. His book drowns me into it me because of the equal parts tragedy, romance, adventure yarn, and meditation, Peace Like a River is an inspired story of family love, religious faith, and the lifelong work and trust required of both. Set in the Minnesota countryside and North Dakota Badlands of the early 1960s, Peace Like a River is a moving, engrossing, beautifully told story about one family's quest to retrieve its most wayward member. Reuben Land, the novel's asthmatic and self-effacing eleven-year-old narrator, recounts an unforgettable journey riddled with outlaw tales, heartfelt insights, and bona fide miracles. Born without air in his lungs, Reuben is keenly aware of the gift of breath—and, by extension, the gift of life. Time and again, both gifts are bestowed on Reuben by his father, a gentlemanly soul who works as a school janitor and has the power—and faith—to bestow true miracles. But when Davy (Reuben's brother) kills two intruders who break into the Land home with evil intent, and then escapes from prison while his trial is in progress, events seem to have worsened beyond the aid of miracles.

Keno Mapps respons to Tesfaye Kekeba presintation
I fell that Tesfye fells very deeply about his book bastard out of Carolina. it seemed to me that we enjoyed writing about the little girl Bone Anny Boatwrught. Hearing about this book man me think about all the kids in the world today that are abused on a daily bases.
