Syllabus for English 201A/B: Preparation for Composition and Reading

The English 201 series (4 units) is a preparatory course designed to emphasize the thinking, reading, organizing and writing skills required for successful execution of college-level papers in all subject areas. This course is designed to for those students requiring minimal preparation for entering English 1A.

Absences must be kept to a minimum. If you miss 6 consecutive hours or 8 cumulative hours you will risk being dropped from the course, doing poorly or both. English 201 consists of weekly essays and daily assignments. This is a portfolio driven class. Keep all of your written work, graded and otherwise to turn in the last day of class. There will be an assessment, a midterm, a research project, a final and a presentation of the research essay.

Tupac Amaru Shakur

I thought it might be interesting to look at the life of one of rap’s more well-known artists, Tupac Amaru Shakur (25), who died before we had a chance to know the fullness of his genius. We’ll be reading a memoir about his mother in Jasmine Guy’s Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary; a scholar’s research in Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D.’s Holler if You Hear Me, and from the protagonist himself in his The Rose that Grew from Concrete by Tupac Shakur.

The questions and analysis will come out of the discussions and listening parties as we look for themes in the work and try to reconstruct the artist’s life through his songs which were quite autobiographical. Tupac loved his mother, but he was angry with her too. We will describe this relationship and how mother and son were able to mend it. Forgiveness is preached, however, it takes a certain kind of personality to actually let bygones be bygones. Tupac personified “thug life.” He had old ladies tattooing his TL on their arms. What is a thug and why did Tupac celebrate it?

Keep a reading log. Discussion groups will meet each week. Students will also keep a reading log/journal/notes with key ideas outlined for each discussion section, along with vocabulary and key arguments listed, with primary writing strategies employed: description, process analysis, narration, argument, cause and effect, compare and contrast, definition, problem solving.

Stewart Pidd Hates English

Stewart Pidd Hates English is a workbook which looks deceptively easy; however, students need to pay attention to the details. The fictional character, Stewart Pidd, hates English, so he doesn’t spend the necessary time to complete his writing tasks. He’d rather do anything instead of writing, and his grades, you will notice, reflect this. The essays you analyze are not deep so don’t worry about content, the authors want you to practice the grammar lessons Stewart Pidd has not mastered. These grammar assignments might be ones you don’t remember or remember only vaguely. The goal of the book is to help you identify these errors in your own writing in your revision process, so you don’t make the same mistakes Pidd makes.

In the past we have used Michael Eric Dyson’s Holler to locate the grammatical forms for analysis SPHE takes us through. This semester we will read Guy’s book and if there is any overlap then so be it. It is not intentional. I am using this book with my English 1A class also. Those students shouldn’t have as much trouble with SPHE or at least this is the hope; however, after SPHE students should feel a lot more competent about their writing, because you will have the language necessary to talk about what it is you are doing right and what you need to improve on.

Grammar is not the most important aspect of writing. Having something substantive to say is, however, if you make too many grammatical errors, your audience will often not know what it is you want to communicate.

Research Project

Your research project will entail finding an artist or organization that uses hip hop culture as a tool to develop consciousness and mental, economic, social and spiritual liberation among the members of its discourse community. Cov Records out of Covenant House, is an example of such an organization. The Ella Baker Center which has two initiatives: “Stop the Violence” and Heal the Streets is another such organization. Most of students are probably aware of Youth Uprising. East Side Arts Alliance and DESTINY Arts are also such organization. All are in Oakland. We are profiling people, not organizations, so students have to find a person or leader in such an organization. The social entrepreneur has to have been active in his or her community for at least 10-20 years (exceptions have been made, so talk to me); however, if the social entrepreneur is too new, the researcher will have trouble finding documented resources to draw from, such as, books, essays, articles, films.

The paper will be about 2-4 pages. This does not include the works cited page and bibliography. Students will make 5-10 minute presentations of these papers the day of the final. The paper will be due about two-three weeks prior to the presentation. We’ll discuss this task further later on.

New Heroes

Visit http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/ to read about social entrepreneurs. PBS.org has another program call: Frontline World which also explores social entrepreneurship. Visit: http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/socialentrepreneurs.html. We will explore this assignment more, later in the course.

Why socially responsible economics?

Too often people feel helpless or hopeless when there is a lot you can do as an individual as soon as you realize the answer lies inside of you. If possible choose an entrepreneur who lives in Northern California, someone you’d like to interview and perhaps meet. Students can work on the project together, share resources. Each person has to write his or her own paper, but you can make a group presentation if you like. (If you have taken a class from me in the past, chose another subject.)

Course Objectives

English 201 will look primarily at writing which persuades: argumentative writing, as well as expository writing, narrative and descriptive writing. At the end of the course students will have read work of accomplished writers, as well as practiced writing in a variety of styles to suit the writer’s purpose.

This course is intended to be both a group learning experience as well as an individually rewarding one. Mid-semester students can schedule conferences with the instructor to evaluate his or her progress in the course. Classroom instruction will consist of lectures, small group work, and students working in pairs. This is an effective way for students to exchange ideas with classmates, compare reactions to readings and practice giving and receiving constructive feedback on class work.

Preparation for class, regular attendance and active participation is imperative for those students who wish to succeed in this course.

It is a student’s responsibility to contact the instructor if he or she plans to miss class. The student is responsible for all materials and information given during the class time, so please get telephone numbers for three (3) classmates in case you are late or absent. You will not be able to make up in-class assignments when you miss class.

Requirements for homework assignments:

No late papers are accepted unless arranged in advance. Any papers below a C grade are an automatic revision or rewrite. Essays under 500 words (750 words for English 201B students) will not be accepted. (Put a word count on the upper right corner of page 1.) Choose topics which give you enough to write about. We will use documentation to substantiate all of our claims. With this in mind, I expect all papers to utilize at least two (2) different outside print sources, in addition to the occasional interview, or broadcast journalism, that is, radio or television, internet also. You will learn to document sources; we will practice citing sources in text, using footnotes and endnotes, and writing bibliographies and notes pages. Remember save all your work! This is a portfolio course.

All essay assignments you receive comments on have to be revised prior to resubmission; included with the revision is a student narrative or correction essay to me regarding your understanding of what needed to be done; a student can prepare this as a part of the Writing Center visit (see below), especially if said student is unclear over what steps to take. SPHE will assist students with this response.

Cyber-Assignments

These often daily assignments are posted on the class blog: http://professorsabirsposse.blogspot.com/ To post comments select “ANONYMOUS,” and then type your name in the post. Students do not need to get Gmail accounts. I read the cyber-assignments. If a student wants specific feedback from me ask. For many of the assignments, students are to engage each other (min. 2) in conversation.

Library Orientations:
TBA

We will write short essays that reflect themes and ideas discussed that week. Some of these essays will be written in class and posted on the class blog: http://professorsabirsposse.blogspot.com/

The research essay will be an argument. There will be a midterm (SPHE) and a final (portfolio essay and presentation) along with a Book Report Essay which is a biography or autobiography.

Jot down briefly what your goals are this semester. List them in order of importance.

Homework Assignment 1:
Email the following data to me by August 30, 2012: coasabirenglish201@gmail.com

Your name, mailing address, phone number and e-mail answer, along with answers to the following questions.

What strengths do you bring to the class? What skills or knowledge would you like to leave with once the class ends? What can I do to help you achieve this? Is there anything I need to know, such as a hidden disability, childcare issues, etc., which might jeopardize this goal?

Homework Assignment 2:
Respond on the blog to the syllabus, so I have a record of your reading it. Make sure you include examples from the syllabus to support your points. The response is due by August 31, 2012, 12 noon.

Write a comment to me regarding the syllabus: your impressions, whether you think it is reasonable, questions, suggestions. This is our contract, I need to know you read it and understand the agreement.

Grading

Weekly essays: 20 percent
Cyber Assignments: 10 percent
Midterm: 10 percent
Final: 15 percent
Research Essay/Presentation: 5-10 percent
Portfolio: 15 percent

Office Hour Visits or instructor contacts (5 for the semester): 5-10 percent
This includes a reflection on the visit sent as a follow-up.

Each book will have collected writings or essays. This in itself is its own “portfolio.” The essays which take their themes from the books are practice essays, and are about a fourth of your grade, your midterm and final are another fourth and your portfolio is the final fourth. (Save all of your work.) You can average the grades to see how to weigh the various components.

The Writing Center is a great place to get one-on-on assistance on your essays, from brainstorming and planning the essays, to critique in areas like clarity, organization, clearly stated thesis, evidence or support, logical conclusions, and grammatical problems. In the Writing Center there are ancillary materials for student use. These writing programs build strong writing muscles. The Bedford Handbook on-line, Diana Hacker’s Rules for Writers on-line, Townsend Press, and other such computer and cyber-based resources are a few of the many databases available. There is also an Open Lab for checking e-mail, a Math Lab. All academic labs are located in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) or library. The Cyber Café is located in the F-bldg.

Again, students need a student ID to use the labs and to check out books. The IDs are free. Ask in Student Services (A-bldg.) where photos are taken.

Have a tutor of teacher sign off on your essays before you turn them in; if you have a “R,” which means revision necessary for a grade or “NC” which means “no credit,” you have to go to the lab and revise the essay with a tutor or teacher before you return both the graded original and the revision (with signature) to me. Revise does not mean “rewrite,” it means to “see again.”

When getting assistance on an essay, the teacher or tutor is not an editor, so have questions prepared for them to make best use of the 15-20 minute session in the Lab. I will give you a handout which looks at 5 areas of the essay you can use as a guide when shaping your questions for your peer review sessions. Please use these guidelines when planning your discussions with me also.

For more specific assistance, sign up for one-on-one tutoring, another free service. For those of you on other campuses, you can get assistance at the Merritt College’s Writing Center, as well as Laney College’s Writing Labs.

Correction Essays & Essay Narratives

All essay assignments you receive comments on have to be revised prior to resubmission; included with the revision is a student narrative to me regarding your understanding of what needed to be done, that is, a detailed list of the error(s) and its correction; a student can prepare this as a part of the Lab visit, especially if said student is unclear over what steps to take. Cite from a scholarly source the rule and recommendations for its correction.

Students can also visit me in office hours for assistance; again, prepare your questions in advance to best make use of the time. Do not leave class without understanding the comments on a paper. I don’t mind reviewing them with you.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Reading:

Analyze and evaluate a variety of written material for relevance and validity in

academic, professional and social situations.

Writing:

Compose and critique written responses to reading materials and scenarios in

academic, professional and social situations.

Critical Thinking:

Synthesize information from a variety of sources and formulate original ideas

based on evidence in academic, professional and social situations.

Diverse Perspectives:

Recognize the vastness of perspectives in today’s society and integrate those

perspectives into a personal world view.

More on grades, and portfolio

We will be honest with one another. Grades are not necessarily the best response to work; grades do not take into consideration the effort or time spent, only whether or not students can demonstrate mastery of a skill – in this case: essay writing. Grades are an approximation, arbitrary at best, no matter how many safeguards one tries to put in place to avoid such ambiguity. Suffice it to say, your portfolio will illustrate your competence. It will represent your progress, your success or failure this session in meeting your goal.

In past semesters, students have skipped the portfolio and/or the final. Neither is optional.

Office Hours

I’d like to wish everyone much success. I am available for consultation on Wednesdays, 9:30-10:30 AM and on MW by appointment. I am also available after 3:30 PM Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment. My office, D-219, is located in the D-216 suite. My campus number is (510) 748-2286. Leave messages on my cell phone.

My email again is: coasabirenglish201@gmail.com. Let me know the day before, if possible, when you’d like to meet with me. I am more of a phone person. Texts are fine. Ask me for my cell phone number. I do not mind sharing it with you.

Take time to exchange email and phone numbers with classmates (2), so if you have a concern, it can be addressed more expeditiously. Again study groups are recommended, especially for those students finding the readings difficult; don’t forget, you can also discuss the readings as a group in the Lab with a teacher or tutor acting as facilitator.

More on Logs

Keep a vocabulary log for the semester and an error chart (taken from comments on essay assignments). List the words you need to look up in the dictionary, also list where you first encountered them: page, book and definition, also use the word in a sentence. You will turn this in with your portfolio.

Students are expected to complete their work on time. If you need more time on an assignment, discuss this with me in advance, to keep full credit. You lose credit each day an assignment is late and certain assignments, such as in-class essays cannot be made up. All assignments prepared outside of class are to be typed, 12-pt. font, double-spaced lines, indentations on paragraphs, 1-inch margins around the written work. See SPHE.

Cheating

Plagiarism is ethically abhorrent, and if any student tries to take credit for work authored by another person the result will be a failed grade on the assignment and possibly a failed grade in the course if this is attempted again. This is a graded course. There might be an option to take this course C/NC. See Admissions and Records.

Response:

So far the book Afeni Shakur is an interesting book. i think i'm going to enjoy reading these books this semester. As for the Stewart Pidd Hates English book, it helped me refresh my memory with a lot of the grammar and sentence structures.
When are we going to start our research project and when will it be do? i love writing, but sometimes i make a lot of mistakes. Other than all the essays, reading and other work i think that this semester ill be fun. By the way, you grading looks intense, but it seems do able.

Response to the syllabus

First of all,I think the whole syllabus of this class is an useful information and it can help to understand more about the class I am taking. It was because I have no idea what should I do in this class before I get this notice. I am much clear about what my goal and how I can get a good grade in this class after reading this course objectives. Also, the information about grading can achieve me to reach my goal. It can help me to be more active to do something on improving my English skills.

"Stewart Pidd Hates English" textbook is a good book to practice the basic grammar skills. It can help to develop skills about writing and proof reading. Also, the author's goal of editing this book is to identify those errors that you would make in the writing. I agree that if there are too many grammatical errors, no one can understanding your writing. Therefore, I think this book can help me to get a great improvement on writing skills.

Hopefully, there are only 2-4 pages in the research project and the topic of the project is quite interesting. But if wee need to find some artist or organization ,it will be an only difficulty in this project. It was because we might not know where we can find such a people with such a great experience and knowledge in hip hop culture. I hope that we can have a discussion in class earlier so that we can have more time to do preparation on that.

What if we don't know any organizations to write on for the research project? Is you going to give us a list of some acceptable organizations to write about? With the "New Heroes" section of the syllabus, I don't understand this section.

How often is you going to post a cyber assignment on the blog site? I would like to know in advance so I can check regularly or you is going to announce it to the class when you post something new to the blog site.

Is the portfolio really that necessary for this class? I really don't mind it doing it just that I prefer not to do so. Also with the corrections on essay and narratives, is we try to perfect all essay and narratives or to try to bring out the best writing possible from a person?

Overall with the syllabus, everything in pretty detail and cover everything about what the class is going to do and so on.

Response to the Syllabus

I’m interested in the books, I don’t know anything about Tupac Shakur so I’m excited to learn about his life and why he was influential. My English classes from high school were all connected to the history classes so they were more like another history class, but having a class about one person is much better because we’ll be able to go into great depths on Tupac’s life.

“Stewart Pidd Hates English” sounds like it will be very simple and straightforward. The research project sounds a bit intimidating, but relatively easy compared to other research papers I’ve had to do. The goals are pretty standard for an English class, but I need to improve in my essay writing skills so this class will be useful.

I don’t really understand why we need to keep a portfolio, but saving all my work won’t be difficult so that won’t be a problem. I can’t tell if the vocabulary log is only for the books we read for class and if there is a minimum amount of words we need it to have, because I had to do that in third grade and I ended up choosing words I already knew just to reach the minimum.

The syllabus you handed out to us in class is good and helpful information. The books you have picked for this class I think are really going to get my attention and get me to actually enjoy English class. Tupac is still an influential person and it’s good that we still keep him alive by talking about him.
The way you will grade us I think is fair you distributed the percentages evenly and fair so we could succeed in your class. I’m not use to putting stuff on blogs and emailing assignments to teachers I’ve only turned in hard copies to teachers but in this class its something ill have to get use to. The office hours you are available are good times and reasonable.
The cheating policy you have in placed is reasonable and should be in place because everybody should push them selves to be original and actually try and write. The homework length policy is also good because people should try and push themselves and write more and really express themselves. The course objectives you have listed making people accountable and people should be also what you have listed what we will do through out the semester will help us grow not only as young writers but as readers as well.

RESPONSE:

I think it's interesting that we are going to be reading about a very popular and well known artist Tupac Amaru Shakur. Tupac was famous for always keeping it real. Professor Sabir states "What is a thug and why did Tupac celebrate it?" Tupac claimed himself as a thug because that was his way of life. Tupac's life is a strong subject to read about and i will enjoy it because i can never get bored.Reading is always easier when you're reading something you want to.

Professor Sabir states in her syllabus "We will write short essays that reflect themes and ideas discussed that week." I think this will be a great way to keep the class focused on the topic. It will also keep the subject fresh on our minds because we have to put a lot of thought into the writing on the subject. Sabir also states "The research essay will be an argument." Argumentative essays are better to write because there is always something to write about. Also because you get to explain your argument against the other side.

As for grading, essays are ranked at 20% of the class. Which means they have a lot of importance in this class. Professor Sabir states "Each book will have collected writings or essays." Meaning, all the reading we do and our understanding of it is reflected on our writing about it or essays on the reading. Essays are a "fourth of our grade" so we should take them seriously.

So what I though about the syllabus, is that in the course there well be alot of work. While going over the list of book, i noticed that there were books about Tupac. It was a bit of an excitement to be able to learn about his works and about his story.

I am also looking forward to seeing a concert as well. It seems that even though it will be an interesting class. I think that the after learning about what we are going to cover in the class will make it better.

It seems that the class well be very good. I also want to say that some assignments that we need to use the internet to turn assignments in should at least have a few days.

Because if there is a black out or something is wrong with our router then we won't be able to turn it. I am also glad to learn that we can turn work in by hand.

Goal:

1. I attend this English 201A course in order to improve my writing and reading skills.

2. To broaden my vocabulary, since English is not my native language, I have to really work on this in order to get to the next level.

3.Through this class, I will learn grammar, punctuation, complex reading, research etc.

All these things are critical for my school work and personal goal. I want to attain for personal development.

It has been almost 10 years since I have been in school so at first reading this syllabus was a little overwhelming. I had to read it a couple times so that I could fully comprehend what this class will be about this semester.

So far this class has already refreshed my memory on how to write properly and know what a sentence and paragraph all in tales. I never use to pay attention to the different types of writing there is as far as argumentative writing, expository writing, narrative and descriptive writing.

The books that were chosen for this class seem interesting. SPHE has definitely broken down so far the ways of writing and grammar. I like reading autobiographies and biographies so these books should keep me intrigued.

The cyber-assignments are all new to me so that will take some getting use to. With the use of the syllabus and the recommendation of books to assist with this class the essays, research presentation and portfolio should get easier.

I hope to take home from this class better skills in reading, writing, critical thinking.

Response:
The Syllabus Professor Sabir had given out to her students was to inform us about what to expect during class. She included that her class is a combination of two class; English 201A and English 201B. That way the students of a more difficult class may offer help to the other class that may be in need. Professor Sabir has assigned a few books concerning the famous West Coast Rapper; Tupac Amaru Shakur, unfortunately died at the young age of 25. The books she had assigned, according to the Syllabus, are; "Afeni Shakur: Evolution", -Jasmine Guy, "Holler if You Hear Me", -Michael Eric Dyson, and "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" -Tupac Shakur. "Afeni Shakur: Evolution" is a memoir about Tupac's mother, "Holler if You Hear Me" is a scholar's research in Michael Eric Dyson, Ph. D.'s and finally "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" the author is the protagonist himself Tupac Shakur.
The combination class of English 201A/B also assigned the English workbook "Stewart Pidd Hates English". The workbook is to make the students vigilant to notice and reflect Stewart Pidd's dislike for English. The author's goal is to make students practice the grammar lessons the protagonist in the workbook, Stewart Pidd, has trouble understanding. This is where Michael Eric Dyson's "Holler if You Hear Me" becomes significant to locate grammatical forms to analyze the workbook and guide students to further understand. "Grammar isn't that important related to writing, but having something substantive to say is and too many grammatical errors will result in the audience confusion of the message you wish to pass". -Last Paragraph of the "Stewart Pidd Hates English" section of the Syllabus (rewritten)
This class course objective is to teach students to be able to write persuasive/argumentative writing. During the end of the course of classes students will be able to observe the work of accomplished writers to find their own preference of writing their own articles or other works. Not so much an optional goal is to socialize with other classmates because in order to comprehend the public and further increase chances of career specialization. With this networking, making friends with the public around the area would still be no easy feat but will be able to accomplish successful communication.

First I would like to talk about t the books you chose for this semester. When I saw the book look, I said to myself, “yes, something interesting". I myself haven’t had a chance to read a book in a long time. Between kids and life, just could never get the time. I was a big fan of Tupac and would to more insight of who he was and where he came from. I am looking forward to reading all of them.
As for the learning outcomes and objective, I hope that I am able to reach them all. It seems like a lot to cover in one semester, but as long as thing stay organized and I apply my self, I’m sure it can get done. I see that we will do a lot of writing in this course. I look forward to brushing up on my writing skills. Essay writing is a bit ruff for me, so I hope this will help.
Glad you added all of you info and contact information. Being available for questions is very important. The idea of doing a conference during the middle of the semester is great. This way we will know where we stand in the class and what we need to do to improve.

Response to Syllabus

I found the syllabus to be very useful and informative. You provided detailed information on what to expect from this course and even ourselves this semester. From reading the syllabus I was able to understand your grading policies, the required text books, the course objectives and your contact information. I found the research project the most interesting because I personally love Hip Hop so to find organizations that grow through Hip Hop culture will be a pleasure. I also look forward to reading some of the textbooks required in this course. My mother was a huge fan of Afeni Shakur so I’ve heard a lot about her but to actually read her book myself will give me a reason to view her as my mom did.

I also noticed that we have to interview an entrepreneur and I found the subject of the topic to be relatable “Too often people feel helpless or hopeless when there is a lot you can do as an individual as soon as you realize the answer lies inside of you.” That quote is something that everyone should keep in mind during their daily lives when they’re feeling hopeless. I look forward to fulfilling the course objectives to becoming an accomplished writer. Class participation won’t be a problem because I love to interact and provide my ideas to classmates as well as listening and respecting their ideas. Although the homework assignments are missing I appreciate the time and details put into this syllabus.

So far these books look really interesting. I don't read that much, but this semester I must read now in order to pass the class. I grew up listening Tupac Shakur, so I am exited to read his books. I beleive Stewart Pidd hates English will help me to imporve my writing skills. Research paper that we are going to do is interesting, I can not think of any rapper. Hopefully I will found one that stands out for the research essay.
I will not miss any class unless it is emergency. I am glad that we are reading interesting book like Tupac Shakur, otherwise I have no interest of reading boring books. I am thinking to mark my book as I read, to see how it helps. I will try my best to pass the class successfully. Assignments look kind of hard, but I got to do my best.

Reading the syllabus I feel that is pretty long, I say this because often times along the semester syllabus are subject to change so I find it to be pretty long. I feel that you expect a lot from your students, which is reasonably I guess; I feel that your English course will be very challenging. Keep a reading log you say, what is the point of the reading log? Is it to help us during the discussion groups, but how will the discussion groups, help us? Will this prep and developed any skills as we move along in the class? I don’t really get the research project, why does it have to surround around the hip-hop culture; I mean I don’t really think the project is going to be good if I have no interest in the subject at hand.

“English 201 will look primarily at writing which persuades”. I thought the course would look into all types of writing during the course. Why does it focus mainly of persuasive writing, is most of college writing based on trying to convince the writer of your point?

During the course of this class I just hope to learn a lot. I want to improve my writing skills and grammar, during the course of this semester.

Response of the Syllabus:
First of all, I think the syllabus is very useful for all students because they have contained all the details what we need. It remains us all the notices we have to pay attention and all the works we have to do. It makes us more convenient to understand what our professor want us to do. I am very impressed by the course objective because it leads me to set up a goal for studying English writing and reading in this semester. The research project provides some channel s for us to have discussion in the classroom and refresh our memories. I am prepared for challenges in English writing and reading, and I will learn some skills from this syllabus.
Besides, We started the learning of “Stewart Pidd Hates English” in this week. I think this is one of practical books we have because it helps us to figure out some words which confused us. Afterward, it is able to help us to correct the error of sentence punctuation we have ever had. Furthermore, we can learn how write with correct grammars in the efficient ways. I just realized how important it is for a reading beginner. Moreover, the “Afeni Shakur” just gives us an opportunity to read in the classroom. We have a lot of things to read in this semester. Therefore, we will start on this book. Meanwhile, it is easy to understand the story the author tells us in the books
After all, the English 201A, the beginning of English writing and reading, will start everything on this syllabus. The syllabus, the most efficient guide in our class, give us another opportunity to prepare everything.

This is a well done syllabus. I find it very organized, i can easily find what i want to know. I find it interesting that we will be studying a book about Tupac Shakur.Personally I see Tupac as a incredibly influential person and In am looking forward to studying his book and learning about the person that raised him. I have never in my life enjoyed reading the book for my english class, for example , in the Great Gatsby, I hated that book, but this might be the first time I'm going to actually enjoy reading the class book.

I feel that your grading policy is very reasonable. In highschool,I never really liked their grading policy. My old teachers used to judge our grade putting fifty percent of our grade on like the tests or the essays. Your grading policy is really spread out , and i like that.i also like how you like to get to know your students. Ever since I got to highschool, the teacher never actually tries to get to know me.

I like everything about your class, except all the books I have to buy! I guess I shouldn't be complaining, there's plenty of other classes that has to get the same amount or even more. So overall I really like your class.

We are going to learn how to write composition correctly which is good for me because I am and second language speaker person. Reading the book and writing going to help me a lot I can see. I came to class late, I could not order my book yet but I listen to book some one read it last class. It was interesting for me. I am okay with speaking and understanding, but I am sure that I am going to have hard time for writing.
This syllabus makes us to be ready for next step. We are going to have reading log, discussion group
We are keeping a reading log/ journal, notes and vocabulary. Learn these are good think to learn new language but I think I am going to need lots of help and support. I t is going to be too much but I am going to try ewe though I am not young as they are. I think everything looks good but. I wish we have one person to help second language speaker.

After reading the syllabus which is very detailed, I have gotten a better understanding of what is expected from me during this semester, and what I’ll be looking forward to accomplishing, and learning. The one thing that stuck out to me in the syllabus is writing my own gaols for the class. In most syllabus its more of what is to be expected of the class/students, but to see what goals that we set for ourselves in this class is exciting, and also makes me deter minded to achieve the goals that I put down for myself.

My interest in this class is very high due to the fact that my reading, thinking, and organizing skills will be greatly enhanced. Writing is something that I enjoy doing, but also needs a lot more work, and I believe that this class will definitely be able to enhance my writing skills, and will continue to do so, on my journey in school. In high school research papers were a challenge for me, only because I needed more information on how to use citations, put quotes in the right area, and making sure that my entire paper was error free. But i definitely believe that being in this class will definitely teach me how to write and get a better understanding of how to write a college level essay.

Each day in class I am looking forward to the new things that I will learn. And since reading the syllabus I have gotten a better understanding of what we will be doing this semester.

After carefully reading over the syllabus you mentioned that we need to do 5 office hour visits or instructor contacts that is worth 5-10 percent of our grade if we need additional help or questions can we come more often than the required times. Also when you talk about getting a tutor or teacher sign off on our essays can we find them in the English lab? I really like that you said, “All essay assignments you receive comments on have to be revised prior to resubmission” that will really help me out.

Syllabus

I appreciate the syllabus you wrote out for the class. It is the most descriptive and informative one I have read during my time in school. It states what students will need and what to expect, such as the grading, assignments, and materials we will need and read.

Page one, paragraph two is very helpful to me. It let me know the absent policy is, but I would like to know how to gain eight cumulative hours. Also seeing the grading policy, page five, put my mind at ease knowing the percentage will be split into six sections. I do have a question on the cheating policy, page seven. I try to have my sister revise all of my work and when she does, she enhances my language to make my work look more professional. Do you consider that plagiarism.

Some if not most of all of what is stated in the syllabus I have not done. Two to four page research papers and five minute presentations are not my strengths. Never have I done research on a public figure or kept up with the news. I never kept a reading log nor a journal. But I believe you will take the time to help me understand these processes. I also look forward to visiting your office for questions and answers.

Syllabus

I am expecting to work hard this semester in my English. The books and the plan of assignments are interesting. Thanks for the opportunity to explain the absent and also make in class assignments for that day miss. I am scare of the project for the final of the semester, but I am doing my research with the institution who work with Latinos.

The golds for the semester are kind of tricky because the personal impute will be challenger. It will be a personal compromise with the class. The list of mistakes is new for my, and I have high expectations of the results of my final work.

Response to the syllabus

This syllabus gives us general information and what we need to focus on in the next four months. The class is designed to improve our grammatical skills as well as critical thinking, reading, writing techniques and etc. This syllabus provides variable access to the additional assistance such as tutoring which to me is very important. Since English is my second language, I realize that essay will be very challenge to me. I will do the best I could and constantly practice. Hopefully I will make it.
Regarding to the portfolio, in my understanding, we will turn all the assignments in at the end of the semester instead of turning in each assignment when we complete. Could you please kindly advise!

Jada
u r the omega of my heart
the foundation of my conception of love
when i think of what a black woman should be
its u that i first think of

u will never fully understand how deeply my heart feels 4 u
i worry that we'll grow apart and i'll end up losing u

u bring me 2 climax without sex
and u do it all with regal grace
u r my heart in human form a friend
i could never replace

It is a declaration of love. It is the expreesion of the perfecction pf a relationship. Many spend all his live traing to found true love; and he with simple worlds transport the reader to that feeling. If I am traing to conquer a woman this poem will be my wapen. The simplicity and in the same time the complection of the poem, make it reach and touching.
The part of the poem how more touch me was "u bring me 2 climax without sex"; it is a staiment of the profundity of the feelings. It evocate a smart, intelligente and strong woman how has the capacity to keep the interes without be overwarming. Be that kind of person is gold for many of us, but unfortunally only few can be describe with that qualities.
