Cyber-Assignment Library Orientation

In 250 words minimally, briefly state what you learned about scholarly research you didn't already know. Secondly, state what knowledge was reinforced in the presentation. Be specific. Bring to class Monday to share. Post here. If your essay is too long, post it in two parts.

What do you want to know more about that you will visit the library again and speak to the librarian about?

Professor David Sparks gave students three documents. Briefly talk about each of them and how you might use them as you prepare for your first essay.

He started his presentation just talking about information literacy and why libraries are important and what use they are to scholars.

Talk about what is meant by primary source verses secondary sources and the benefits of either. Professor Sparks showed us books and a video on this topic. What books on the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense looked interesting to you? Which do you plan to look at as you prepare for the first essay on Virgin Soul.

What is a database and how does a student access it? How do you find an article in the database? What is keyword verses subject searches? What's the difference and what are the benefits of either? Think about breath.

What is the fun part of the research process?

Talk about the C.R.A.P.P. test.

What is an archive? What archives did the professor share which is related to themes explored in Virgin Soul? Where are they located? Are any archives on-line?

How do we evaluate sources for credibility? What are the components of a good source?

Library Resources
I learned so much from the library orientation.Library homepage is useful because it have link to announcement and student can get more information. Print resources connect to all four colleges library. Article database is use for search, key words, different type of search. Guide to website general information about majors and classes that should be taken. Applying critical thinking: evaluation and information. Student can get more information about tutoring. He talk about Primary and Secondary sources. Primary source focal point of discussion. For example:CNN.COM website. Secondary source contrasts a primary source, a secondary resource is a document or recording that relates or discusses information originally presented elsewhere. For example: find an article on CNN.COM. Part of a conversation about topic, see what other have discussed gather background into explore subtopic. He also talk about The Black Panther Movement, I learned that it last from 1966-1982. It was founded in Oakland,CA , Judy Juanita talks about The Black Power Movement in her book “Virgin Soul.”

This past Wednesday I learned so much about the library. Mr. Sparks gave me so much information about the library. I find the library very useful because it helps me with my education, research and find interesting books to read. Also I can at the library a lot of questions. For example, how long did this library been around? How can I become a library card holder? How can I use the computers to find the particular book that I am looking for? I know that African-Americans have been fighting for what's right for us to have the privilege to have access to the library. Because the library hold so much important information that I can find, for example, the Black Panthers. The library have so many information about the Black Panthers, from Bobby Seale, and etc.

In the library orientation presentation professor Sparks talked about library database and how they are used. He also showed us a power presentation with some book about the Black for self-defense; I can’t recall the name of all of them but I do have one in particular that I will love to use. A database is a structured set of data held in a computer, especially the ones that are accessible in various ways. To access a database student need to go to the library website and put the keywords of the subject that they are looking for. Keyword searching is like a type of searching you are probably already familiar with. It is how you would typically search web search engines like Google. You think of words or phrases relevant to your topic and enter them in the search box.
When searching the library catalog, your keywords and phrases are searched for in all of the fields of the catalog record. It is important to remember that because you are using natural language, the word you use to describe a subject may not be the same word used by all of the authors. Subject searching is a type of searching that allows you to look for categories or subject headings instead of keywords. Subject terms are searched for only in the subject field.
When the catalog record for an item is created it is assigned at least one subject heading. These subject headings are based on a pre-defined vocabulary in which all items determined to be about the same subject are given the same subject heading regardless of the term used by the author. A drawback of many of these pre-defined vocabularies is that the words chosen are not always the most intuitive or obvious choices. The fun part of it is that you can find more topic and ideas for your paper.

Library Orientation Response
On the day of Library Orientation, I learned the topics under Library Homepage, Print Resource, Databases, and Guide to Website. I knew that I can look up news, announcements, and events from library homepage. It also helps you to do research. You can find many books that related to your topic by using a computer system and where it located in any Peralta Colleges, or you can find many resources that will help you. For Databases, I learned your username is your last name, and password is your Student ID number to access. The Guide to Website was the most helpful resource for me because it has all the links that will you with many question or information.
During the orientation, the most confusing part was when the instructor showed us the books about “Black Panther.” I did understand why are we learning and researching about this topic because we did not have any assignment about it. It was so suddenly.
There were certain things that you will look for your research topic. Currency is the timeliness of the information. Relevance is the importance of the information for your needs. Authority is the source of the information. Accuracy is the reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the information content. Purpose is the reason the information exists. These are the five measures of evaluation. It called C.R.A.A.P.

Library Resources
College of Alameda offers innumerable kinds of services to its students. All this services are important and helpful; even though many of the students have no idea about it. For that reason, our instructor took us to the library to receive a class about the resources available at that department. Although this was not my first time in there, I learned new ways to do researches. Good students always look for any available possibilities to rich their assignments. The library can give us the information we need to accomplish our goal.
One of the points mentioned on the class at the library was about the databases and what kind of information we can find in there. The databases are the information we can find online in the library page. This articles are written by professors, advance students or people with a plenty knowledge on the subject. These articles are reliable information to base on for a good research. However, the database was not the only discussion topic during this class. We also talked about the differences between primary source and secondary source. Primary source is a document which was written or create during the time under study. On the other hand, secondary source is which analyzes the primary sources. Some examples of secondary sources can be textbooks, magazines, or articles.
Mr. Sparks talked about the Black Panther Party. He showed us how we can find more information about it in the different kinds of sources that the library provides to the students. Also this topic is on the book we are reading, “The Virgin Soul” by Judy Juanita. Not only I learned new things in this library class but I also reinforce what I learned before.

Library Orientation Response
Importance of Library
The day that our English class went to the Library Orientation, spent wisely in my opinion. I found the orientation pretty useful and helpful. The librarian, Professor David Sparks started talking and explaining how library and library resources are important tasks to find knowledge in various subjects. The library resources would be library homepage, article databases and print resources.
I understood that from C.R.A.A.P test, I could know Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose. Currency or When includes the timelines of the information about when was it published or posted, if it’s revised or updated and if the links are operative or not. Relevance is to know if the importance of the information is for our needs. We could make sure that the information relates to our assignments and know the advised audience. In Authority, it contains the source of the information which we could find the author, publisher and sponsor or their contact information, such as a publisher or email addresses. Accuracy includes the reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the information content; we could find the information resource, if the information has evidence and if there are spelling, grammar, or other typographical errors. Lastly, Purpose of the reason why the information exists. I'm glad that I found these informations so I wouldn't have a hard time at the library.
