Revision Strategies Cyber-Assignment

Reflect on the video from the Write Course series: Revision Strategies. What new information did you learn? What information was reinforced? What do you plan to do differently from now on? How did the introduction of published authors who shared their writing process help you feel better about "the revision process"?

In a minimally three (3) paragraph essay, reflect on the video and articles. Include a citation from all three sources, one per paragraph.

Revision of an essay

The goal of an essay should not to be perfect on the first try, but to get your point across though drafts. According to actual studies done by professors, stated from The write course: “Revision Strategies, “the strive for perfection on the first try is treated as a disease to people. Unless you are a super genius then you are not going to get it right the first time. Through revision and drafts, you will identify your mistakes and also add on ideas and sentences that will enhance your essay.
Often we go to other people to look at our essay and give us advice on what to do to improve our essay. However, sometimes its not the best thing to do. As stated in Chapter 7 1/2 Office hours: Revision: Help from the Audience, “Not all advice is good advice. You are the responsible party.” It’s good to get other peoples advice but, it’s better to be aware on what they are talking about.
Lastly, there is the psychology behind revision. Many people find revision unappealing due to the fact that it is extra work and often you will end up rewriting the whole paper. In Chapter 8 ½ Office Hours: Revision: The Psychology of it all, it states that that “boredom is not what makes revision such hard work. The main impediment to effective revision is that most writers, deep down, are hoping against hope that they won’t find anything that needs to be revised. “ The psychological challenge of writing the paper is the base of the paper. Being mentally prepared to write an essay is a great way to write an essay and its drafts. You must be able to write with some sense of passion and care for the paper and not with an attitude of just trying to get it done. While writing the essay, if something doesn’t seem right, then it isn’t. As it is stated blatantly in Chapter 8 ½ Office Hours: Revision: The Psychology of it all, “It’s not just your imagination. Trust your instincts.”
Thinking that perfection is the goal on the first try is ludicrous. To get your point across through drafts and revisions should be on your mind at all times when trying to write an essay. Through the mental challenge of writing an essay is the biggest part of your paper. You should always be mentally prepared to write.

Revision Assignment

While watching the video from the writing course series I learned a few helpful points that I will keep in mind when writing my own paper. A good point that stood out to me was the suggestion of starting with writer based writing in the first draft and then keeping the audience in mind when re-writing so that after I have read my draft I can get a better picture of who I want my audience to be. One thing that I will do differently with my writing is being more specific when discussing a topic. Being specific will help build credibility in my writing and will also help my audience better understand what I am trying to say.
In the handout “Help form the Audience” I learned that you cannot always accept the advice that people may give you because that person’s advice may not help you but harm you. Friends, family and loved ones are not always good people to help revise writing because emotions can get in the way of needed criticism. I found that very interesting because I would think that your friends and family would be the ones to be the most critical of your work. The best people to get help with revising are my peers and teachers. They know the assignment best and are able to give me better feedback. One thing that I will try to do when I ask someone to revise my paper is ask questions about the things I feel most uncomfortable about concerning my paper.
In reading the hand out “The Psychology of It All” I agree that cause of ineffective revision is the hope that nothing is wrong with the paper. I do the exact same thing because I don’t want to rewrite my paper. But, from reading the handout I learned that when revising my paper, I should trust my instincts. Trusting my instincts will help me save a lot of the time I waste trying to deciding what is going wrong. Also, when I come across a problem that I cannot figure out on my own the help of a teacher is always best. I have always been weary of asking for teachers help because of the criticism but I know that it will help me produce a better product in the end.

How to Write an Organized Paper
Revision literally means to “see again,” to look at something from a fresh, critical perspective. It is an ongoing process of rethinking the paper: reconsidering your arguments, reviewing your evidence, refining your purpose, reorganizing your presentation, reviving stale prose. Most writer think revision is a punishment and the hardest part of writing because they often mistaken it for rewriting. Revision itself is the whole writing process and the core of the writing process.

Think honestly about your thesis: if you are still agree with it, modify it in light of something you discovered as you write the paper. As you revising the paper asks yourself these questions; does it proving the point, or does it just generalize your thesis instead of taking a specific position? Should it be changed altogether? Wait awhile after finished a draft before looking at it again a few hours will work. When return to the draft be honest and pay attention to the subject and the audience.

Think about your purpose in writing states your argument, examine and balance it within your paper. Check if readers are not lost while reading the paper and fix the sentence structure to make the paper clear for them. Take a look at the organization of the paper re-focus on the sentences to see if they are flow and make the paper easy to read. Most unskilled writers think that the first draft have to be perfect all the time; they often focus on grammar than the topic which make them edited the essay prematurely. Sometimes when writers focus too much on their sentences and they forget about their audiences.

Write Course Series: Revision Strategies
Importance of Revision
There are many students who need to understand that revision of the writing is the most important part of the writing in any kind of paper. To write essays or research paper, students have to check all the errors as they write them. But, most importantly, after getting done with the writing, students need to understand that they have to go back and see if any errors were made such as grammar or sentence structure. Without revision, the paper would be same as the first draft.
For revising the paper, as stated in Chapter 7 ½ Office Hours: Revision: Help from the Audience, “It’s all but impossible to oppose the idea of asking other people to have a look at your writing before you finally submit it to your instructor.” The errors that we do not see, other people would probably see it and point it out. This could be one of the good ideas to get new ideas and turn the paper into an essay with complete thought.
As stated in Chapter 8 ½ Office Hours: Revision: The Psychology of It All, “Intelligent revision is always necessary and frequently difficult.” This quote says it all because every person has possibility to make any error or non-clarity. If the revision is used with intelligence, the paper would turn into perfection.

Say What You Mean

To revise is to see again. Being able to revise is important because you are able to correct grammatical or punctuation errors in your writing. To revise, one must look over their own writing or have someone else look over your paper to edit. These fresh eyes will most likely help you to catch any mistakes that you did not see in your own writing. However, there must be caution to whom you pick to revise your writing, the reason why is that is you ask people who are close to you they: “may be reluctant to speak frankly. They simply don’t want to risk hurting your feelings” (Ch 7 ½ Office Hours: Revision: Help from the Audience) The great thing about revision is that peer review is not restricted to just your loved ones. Instead of having a loved one look at your writing, you can always have a colleague or classmate to help you revise. “Here is an audience of classmates, an audience that reads the same texts, receives the same assignments, knows what the instructor cares most and least about them” (Ch 7 ½ Office Hours: Revision: Help from the Audience) Having a classmate look over your writing would benefit you because they are less reluctant to think that their advice could hurt your feelings and help you in specific areas that the instructor emphasises on. Another thing to always remember in revision is that: “Not all advice is good advice. . . ” You are the author therefore you should not be forced into taking out or keeping any piece of writing that someone else suggests. Just because your colleague would seem to have more knowledge than you does not mean that they do.
Some other revision strategies consist of looking over again at your own paper and to put yourself in your audience’s shoes. The video, shows “say what you mean” and that there must always be “order” in your writing. (The Write Course: Revision Strategies VHS) To “say what you mean” means that you need to have a clear and organized thesis so that your point is known without your audience struggling to find out your main point. Also, in revision it is important to “edit prematurely . . . writing does not need to be right the first time” (The Write Course: Revision Strategies VHS). Revision allows you to see your paper again after it has been finished and is always a good thing to do before you submit an essay for a better grade.
Overall, I learned a better way on how to approach someone you wish to revise your paper and who is best to revise it. The information that was reinforced was “Not all advice is good advice” and some revision strategies such as cutting up your paper and rearranging where you introduce them and edit prematurely that, it does not need to be right the first time. From now on I plan to have the right person revise my work and to always make time for revision which I skip because I am usually out of time. The introduction of published authors who shared their writing process helped me feel better about "the revision process" by showing my the psychology of it all. Such as the connection between a newborn baby and your own piece of writing, gradually it will unwrinkle and raw to become the beautiful piece in your hands.

The Write Course: “Revision Strategies” Response

Although most of us known that learn how to write in English well is important for many of us this is quite difficult. However it is not impossible. There are many rules and tips that can help people to learn how to write well because in order to achieve a challenge, practice is the key. In every English course strategies to write a good paper are very important. However there are some rules that we have to keep in mind such that we have to consider the audience who is going to read our papers. On the other hand, other important tip is to re write our paper as many times as we consider is necessary. It is important to made notes along the margins of our first draft because with this we can check all those points to make a better draft from the first one. Like the video about the writing strategies mention, “writing is a process that required you to go back many times and make revisions.”
Sometimes when we write a paper we like to other people read what we wrote but not all the time this is helpful. Since many people are our friends they don’t tell us the true about our writing. I believe that always is something that can be fixed and make our paper looks better to the eye of the reader. The problem coming from considers parents, spouses or roommates to give us an advice. We should ask people who have nothing to do with us because they would give us a more realistic advice about our writing. On the other hand, we can ask to tutors or professionals in that particular area. Since “not all advice is good advice” (Chapter 7 ½).
The writing process could be considered as a pregnancy process because the paper is like a baby. Your pain making a draft from nothing and afterwards you has a paper. It is a raw and rough paper like a newborn baby. They are ugly but at the same time they are a beautiful creation. The same is happen with our writing, it can be prettier while the writer is improving his or her writing skills and make as many revisions as would be necessary to make it better to the audience eye. It is important don’t forget “If it does not seem right to you , it isn’t” (Chapter 8 ½).

Strategy of Perfect Writing

Your writing and your paper are like your babies. You should pay attention to them, but the new born babies are loud, naughty, and they are everywhere. Same as new born baby, your very first draft of writing is messy. But people do not like to revise their first draft because they think revision is drudgery. Although it takes time to revise your writing after you have already done, revision becomes the most helpful strategy of writing, because the strategy helps people to write a perfect writing.
“Not all advices are good advice” (Help from the Audience 217). People think it is easier to ask advice from their relatives, but they usually say “they liked it” because they do not want to hurt your feeling. Also the writer just does not want to revise the writing. “The main impediment to effective revision is that most writers, deep down, are hoping against hope that they won’t find anything that needs to be revised” (The Psychology of It All 251). If you do not make any revision to your first draft of writing, your writing cannot be a perfect writing.
It is helpful to ask advice from your classmates that read the same texts, and same assignments. Also the most helpful adviser is your instructor. Chapter 8½ Office Hour Revision: The Psychology of It All states, “We believe that these are perfect occasions to ask your instructor for a hand. Most instructors welcome with enthusiasm a student who asks them to have a look at a trouble spot” (The Psychology of It All 252). Think critically, and ask help for a perfect writing. Revision is the intelligent way to help your newborn baby to become a beautiful big baby.
